Death Note spin-out sequel

A spin-off sequel to the popular Japanese Death Note movie series. The series is based on the manga Death Note by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata. However, this film follows an original storyline. L change the WorLd was initially intended to chronicle the events before L Lawliet met Kira, and when Naomi and L worked together. Instead, the film chronicles the last 23 days of L's life, after the Kira/Death Note Saga takes place. The film stars Kenichi Matsumoto reprising his roll as L.

Plot

The last foe is a new "Death," created by man. To solve the Kira Case, L (Kenichi Matsuyama) leaves Los Angeles convincing Kira is in Japan. At the same time, his intuition tells him that he may never be able to return to Los Angeles again%u2026

Known as Kira, Light Yagami (Tatsuya Fujiwara), using the Death Note, attempts to become God of a criminal-free new world. By L's ultimate choice, the Kira Case closes, but, at the same time, L loses Watari (Shunji Fujimura) who was L's most trusted partner.

After Watari left, L takes on the task of solving the cases left in Watari's file. As all the cases are solved, a "gift" addressed to Watari arrives. The gift is a little boy. From the SD card the BOY (Narushi Fukuda) has in his possession, L learns that the child is the only survivor of the Thai village, which was exterminated. L also discovers that a huge conspiracy, utilizing a man made "Death," was on the move behind the Thai village tragedy.

Meanwhile, L has another visitor. The girl's name is Maki (Mayuko Fukuda), and she tells L that she has brought something her father, who died a horrible death, told her to deliver to Watari. As L realizes the item the girl brought is, indeed, the "Death" in question, pursuers are closing in. Protecting the two children, L physically makes moves to solve the horrendous case.

However, there were only 6 days left for him…

Unlike the previous films, L is an original screenplay (a novel adaptation was released roughly one month before the film premiere), carving its own fictional niche while making a few welcome, and satisfying nods to Death Note mythology. L is still incredibly quirky and smart, but without the original manga story as backup, the film suffers.

Pic is mostly set during the 23-day grace period before L's death, triggered when he signs his own name in a Death Note book. He takes on a case involving a deadly virus (half-flu, half-ebola) that's been developed by a group wanting to cut down the world population and establish a new global eco-system.

Overall, the film when just watched by itself, could be considered a breath of air (hopefully not stale) for movie-goers out there. But when compared against the previous Death Note films and fictional world that created L, it's simply a passable film with decent (but not excellent) casting and a very questionable plot. L does manage to change the WorLd, albeit at a horrifically slow pace, but it's more of Maki and BOY's world that undergoes a noticeable change. Without the original dark and edgey feeling Death Note was known for, the film and L, never really does live up to expectations.
