Which TV to Buy, an LCD or a Plasma?

Are you wondering which TV to buy, an LCD or a Plasma? Remember, if you have an analog TV, on February 17th, 2009 you will be forced to either buy a digital converter, or buy a new TV.

Since we had an older analog, we opted for a new TV. What a chore. Did tons of research on the web on LCD TVs versus Plasma TVs, and then drove lots of miles around town to look at them.

My goal here, is to save YOU all those hours and miles, and hopefully a little gas money too!

What I Discovered During My Search To Buy An LCD TV vs Plasma TV

When we bought our new TV, we wrestled with what type to buy, LCD TV versus Plasma TV. Keep in mind, our decision was based on our specific needs, and your's may differ somewhat.

1. SIZE - LCD TV vs Plasma TV: While not related to the type of TV you want to buy, it is still very important and depends on what room the TV will go in. However, both LCD TVs and Plasma TVs come in similar sizes. For your MAIN TV, buy at least a 42 inch set though. Buy an even bigger one if your great room and/or living room is larger than average.

2. CLARITY - LCD TV vs Plasma TV: Didn't see much motion blurring with Plasma TVs. However, the new LCD TV sets have 120 Hz technology which reduces this compared to their older models (so they told us).

3. GLARE - LCD TV vs Plasma TV: Plasma TVs have more glare so they've now added anti-relective coating. This is usually not a problem with LCD TVs. However, some have asked why is there glare in LCD TVs? The problem is due to the amount of light coming into the room. If you can't control it, make sure to get the matte-finish panel.

4. COLOR DISPLAY - LCD TV vs Plasma TV: The LCD TVs had brighter images while the Plasma TV sets looked dimmer in the lighted showrooms. We were told we could simply change the mode to make the images more vivid, but we didn't want to mess with that every day. But, I have to admit, the Plasma TVs did seem to have better contrast.

5. VIEWING ANGLE - LCD TV vs Plasma TV: You could stand anywhere and have a great view with the Plasma TVs. On the other hand, the LCD TVs had some limitations.

That pretty much sums up what we discovered during our research. Hope you enjoyed this and that it will save you some time and money when it comes time to buy your new LCD TV or Plasma TV.
