Convert LPs to Digital Format

Ranked #5,870 in Computers & Electronics, #122,311 overall | Donates to KIVA

Music without the scratch, crackle & pop!

Do you have LPs that you can't play or listen to because you don't have a turntable?

Do you have cassettes that you can't play or listen to because you don't have a cassette player?

Do you have mini discs that you can't play or listen to because you don't have a mini disc player?

If any of the above describes your situation, then LP Revivalist (www.lprevivalist.com) is a service that you would find worthwhile investigating. LP Revivalist is based in Sydney, Australia but can provide services throughout Australia as well as internationally.

LP Revivalist was established by Dr Andrew Tindell, a music and Hi Fi enthusiast. He has always preferred the sound of vinyl. Andrew says "Having been frustrated at not having my favourite old albums on CD and hence my iPod and also my Music Server system, I decided to solve the problem by converting my records to digital format. The results became LP Revivalist."

LP Revivalist uses a top end Hi Fi system, professional studio software and an Apple network comprising Mac Pro, Mac mini and MacBook to convert the LPs, cassette, CDs, SACDs and Mini Discs to 24 bit (LPs only) or 16 bit digital format. The music is then loaded on to a music server or CD.

LP Revivalist is the holder of a Casual Reproduction licence (issued by the Australasian Mechanical Copyright Owners Society) which allows LP Revivalist to provide a format shifting service for records that are still subject to copyright protection. The licence allows LP Revivalist to make a digital copy or CD copy of an LP or cassette for the owner of an original, legitimate copy of the record for the owner's personal use and provided that the owner retains the record. If the record is no longer subject to copyright protection or you are the owner of the record or you have obtained permission from the copyright owner to copy the record, the restrictions described above may not apply.

LP/vinyl to CD Conversion

Do you have music on vinyl that you don't have on CD or can't get on CD?

LP Revivalist can solve that problem for you. We first of all clean the record using our Moth MkII record cleaning machine and then we play the album on one of the best turntables in the world, a Linn Sondek LP12 with Ekos SE arm and Arkiv cartridge. We then convert the analogue signal to digital using a standalone Analogue to Digital converter which then feeds the digital signal into our Apple network comprising Mac Pro, Mac mini and MacBook where we capture it using professional studio software. We record in a 24 bit 48KHz or 96KHz process and then convert this to 16 bits using an advanced dither algorithm. This ensures we get the maximum information possible off the record. At this stage we have a digital recording of your album. That in itself sounds pretty good, in fact extremely good, but we don't stop there. We apply a wave correction algorithm that analyses the entire waveform of the recording and identifies all the crackles and scratches. It then removes these and corrects the resulting waveform to produce a quality of sound that is actually better than that originally recorded, although naturally the original vinyl sounds even better. This process also, as multiple listenings have shown, preserves quite clearly the analogue nature of the original recording. We then carefully and by hand divide the original single wave file into individual tracks again as wave files. Finally we will either burn these tracks to a CD for you or alternatively will supply the tracks as tagged (with artist, album, year, genre and track information ) Apple lossless files that can be imported into iTunes and then be either synchronised as is to your iPod or you can convert them to a compressed format as required. We supply the Apple lossless tracks on DVD or, in the case of large quantities of albums on hard disk. Alternatively the tracks can be supplied as FLAC lossless format if required.

Cassette to CD Conversion

Do you have music or other material on cassette that you don't have on CD or can't get on CD?

LP Revivalist can convert your cassettes to CD. We do this using a top quality cassette deck with both Dolby B and C if your cassettes were recorded using these encoding methods. We then convert them to 16bit 44.1khz digital format. We apply digital algorithms to minimise tape hiss and if requested split them into tracks. We always split prerecorded tracks into tracks where these are indicated on the cassette information. If they are tapes you have recorded then we charge extra for this service as we have no way of knowing what is on the tape when we convert it to digital format.

Mini Disc to CD Conversion

Do you have music on mini disc that you don't have or can't get on CD?

LP Revivalist can convert mini disc recordings to CD.

This is a digital transfer process. We take the digital output from the mini disc deck directly into our Apple computer systems and make a digital recording at 44.1Khz which is the same sampling frequency of the mini disc and therefore ensures optimal performance. Tracks are separated and any track information recorded on the mini disc etched on the CD.

Reel-to-Reel to CD

LP Revivalist can convert your reel to reel tapes to CD.

LP Revivalist does this using a top quality reel to reel stereo ( 4 track or 2 track) deck. LP Revivalist converts them to 16bit 44.1khz digital format, applies digital algorithms to minimise tape hiss and if requested splits them into tracks.

LP Revivalist can handle tapes recorded at 1 7/8 ips, 3.75 ips and 7.5 ips.

Conversions to DVD

LP Revivalist has launched a video to DVD Service. LP Revivalist uses a professional digitiser which provides much better quality and accurate video/audio synchronisation compared with some of the cheap consumer video grabber devices. LP Revivalist converts the video to DV standard which is uncompressed and is around 13Gb per hour. LP Revivalist edits in that format and then converts to DVD.

LP Revivalist can currently convert VHS, Video 8 and Mini DV formats to DVD.

The prices quoted on LP Revivalist's website includes a limited editing service - removing blanks, unwanted sections but no detailed editing within a sequence. Such editing is extra and LP Revivalist is happy to provide a quote for this editing.

Note that for reasons of copyright LP Revivalist is unable to copy commercial VHS tapes unless you have permission of the copyright owner.

Will vinyl die out completely?

Vinyl records have become less common and less popular with the rise of new technologies. Will vinyl die out completely?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

No, vinyl will never die out completely.

CossieLeg says:

No way!

BizGuides says:

It is still being used here in the states by a select number.
However, I am not one of them.
I like 21st century technology.
Always moving forward.

Yes, it is outdated and the sound quality is poor.
