Community Helpers ~ Labor Day

Ranked #162 in Education, #3,554 overall

Learning about Occupations and Jobs

Young children love to find out what adults do! Dressing up and acting out adult jobs is so much fun for them to pretend. It is also beneficial to their cognitive and social skills. You will find lesson ideas and resources for teaching about community helpers and neighborhoods on this page.

Along with studying types of careers and the work force, why not also study the history of Labor Day? You will find information about this holiday below, also.

Links to free games and materials I have created are listed below, also. Fun and learning should go hand in hand, so, have a great time with these suggestions. :D

Industrial Revolution & Birth of Labor Unions

Study science and history together!

After studying the Labor Day materials here last year, my teenage son decided he wanted to know more about industries, manufacturing, and labor unions, so I started collecting materials for the following page. He has been studying the industrial revolution from the scientific aspect of inventions and technology along with the history of workers and corporations. You will find some notebook pages, videos, worksheets, lessons, and links that we are currently using. I hope they help you to find materials that you would like for your children and students.

Games & Role Play Activities

Learn by Playing!

I love having kids learn by doing and playing! I've tried to think of things my kids enjoy playing with that also help them learn about the community and work force. Our favorites are: Little People; Lego Buildings, Vehicles, and People; Matchbox Cars; Barbie Dolls; and Polly Pocket's World. I'm sure you can think of tons, too.

One thing that is fun to do is make a huge map! A huge clear or solid color shower curtain from a dollar store will help you create one. Help students draw places from your community on the map with markers, including familiar roads and places. Or, create an imaginary town. Ask them what features, businesses, vehicles, etcetera, they would like in their town. Discuss compass directions, giving directions to places, road names, traffic signs, residential versus business areas, and other things they would find interesting. Most children love to role play with their toy vehicles and people over their town. It's a great way to talk about community helpers and learn about towns and cities while also reinforcing geography and mapping skills. Have fun with your students! :D

Transportation

Kids Love to "Transport"!

Whether by truck, train, or airplane, transportation is necessary in our modern work force! Since workers deliver their goods to more than just their communities, but all over the world, I thought a study of transportation would be appropriate with communities, jobs, and labor.
