Labrador Puppy Training - Training your Labrador

Labrador puppy training requires more than just a few hours of your time every day. Training is an ongoing process, but if you keep at it your retriever will soon be well mannered and doing everything you want. Training your Labrador puppy yourself can be a very rewarding experience to because you will be bonding with your puppy and your lab will grow to listen to you. You will become the "alpha dog" to your puppy, meaning that what you say he will do. The trick to getting to that point is to communicate with your puppy in a way he understands.

Treating Your Labrador Puppy

Treating your labThe best way to communicate with your puppy is - you guessed it- treats. Giving your puppy treats when he does something right is the first step to effectively training your puppy. So if you want your puppy to come to you, you would use a treat to get his attention and then call him by his name, and when he comes to you, give him the treat. There is more to it than that, and you will need to do it over and over for your puppy to realize that this is what you want him to do, but it is a good way to start training your lab puppy.

Praising your Labrador puppy

Praise your labPuppy's love it when you praise them. They will do just about anything to win your affection and if you show them affection, your lab will be more than happy to listen to whatever you tell it. You can use this to your advantage when training your Labrador puppy. A good thing to remember when doing this is that puppy's in general don't have a very long attention span so you will need to praise your puppy right after he does something right. You can use the classic "good boy" or "good girl" praise or you can use your own saying it just has to be uplifting and in a nice tone of voice.

Common Training Mistakes

Start training your labrador today! Some of the most common training mistakes people make when training their Labrador are:

1. Yelling at your puppy. Yelling will actually make your puppy more afraid of you than anything so it is important not to raise your voice when training if possible.

2. Thinking training is over for the day. Your Labrador doesn't stop learning just because you decide the lesson is over. During the first few months of training your puppy will need to be under your constant supervision and mistakes must be corrected as they happen.

3. Not starting early enough. Starting early is key to training your puppy, and while you should start your training when you first get your puppy, or at 8 weeks old, you can teach an old dog new tricks it will just take more time and patients on your part.
