Labrador Retriever Puppy Training

Labrador retrievers make great pets, no bones about it. Training your Labrador retriever when he is still a puppy is the best time to train because your puppy's mind is like a little sponge, so teaching him the right way to do things is really important. There are several things you must teach your Labrador puppy how to do right away, such as potty training, obedience training, and how to behave around people. Labs can be very hyperactive at times, so it is best to teach these skills in a way that your puppy can understand.

Potty training your Labrador puppy

Labrador potty trainingThe very first thing you will want to teach your puppy is where to go to the bathroom. The training should begin the very first day you bring your puppy home and should not stop until your retriever is about 6 to 8 months old. This sounds like a lot of work, but if you do it right you will never have to worry about your lab destroying your new rug, or anything else of value in your home. Let's face it, coming home to find your dog left a surprise on your floor for you is never fun and is something you can avoid.

Labrador Crate Training

Crate training provides your puppy with a safe place to relax when you can't watch him and keeps him out of trouble to. Putting your puppy in the crate at night is a great way to make sure that he doesn't sabotage your home while you are sleeping. Be forewarned though, a new puppy that is not used to his crate may start howling in the middle of the night. This can be annoying, but with enough time and patients your lab will feel at home in his crate, and soon will be house trained. Find out more about Labrador crate training by clicking here.

Labrador retriever Obedience Training

Lab obediance trainingObedience training is necessary in order to have a happy lab that listens to you, doesn't jump on people, and stays by your side when walking. You don't always need to pay someone hundreds of dollars to train your puppy for you, in fact you can do most of it yourself which will bring you and your puppy closer together. A good time to start basic obedience training is the day you get your puppy home. Start with small things first, such as teaching them their name, when to come to you, and how to stay. These commands will come in handy when your puppy gets a little older and you start taking him for walks to the dog park, or down the road. The key with this training is to have a lot of patients and determination to help your puppy succeed. To find out more about Labrador retriever obedience training click here.
