The History Of The Corset
The corset has been around for centuries, going back as far as the 1550s and the royal court in France. Through the centuries it has gone through many changes. Originally they were simple garments stiffened by whalebone or other materials. The front was reinforced with ivory or wood, and laced up the back.
In the 18th century, the style changed to emphasize the bust and contained more boning to straighten the shoulders and push out the rear end.
In the 1820s, the corset was worn by women of all classes-- not just aristocracy as in its past. Metal eyelets revolutionized the corset, allowing for tighter cinching with the laces.
By the 1920s, the corsets fell out of fashion for the most part, making way for more modern, comfortable undergarments such as girdles and brassieres.
However, they were, and continue to be, worn by certain groups. Collectors and aficionados of vintage style lingerie, models, burlesque performers, costumers, and fetishists are just a few examples of folks who still enjoy the look and sex appeal of modern corsetry.
Types Of Corsets
Corsets can be found in both overbust and underbust styles.
The overbust corset (pictured) covers the bust and supports the breasts and creates cleavage as well as shapes your waist. Underbust corsets extend to just under the bust and are typically worn with a bra (or without, occasion depending!)
Most often, corsets lace up the back and have some sort of hook-and-eye closure in the front.

Sizing Guide For Shapewear & Foundation Garments
Corsets
Measure around the fullest part of your bust, the narrowest part of your waist and around the top of your hips. Don't pull the measuring tape too tightly.
For a dramatic hourglass figure, corsets should be fitted 2 to 6 inches less than your actual waist measurement, depending on the desired effect (if you want it to compress your waist size considerably under your clothes, or look attractive worn as lingerie). If your waist is small, your waist will not compress as easily, as there's not as much to compress. A larger gal has more to compress. A good rule of thumb is this:
If your natural waist measures 32" or less, buy a corset 4" smaller than your actual waist.
If your natural waist measures 34" or more, buy a corset 6" smaller than your actual waist.
You can wear the corset loosely tied for a 2" reduction, or fully closed for another 2" reduction. You should never reduce too much that you are uncomfortable.
Corsets need to be "broken in" so you don't want to lace it too tightly the first few times you wear it.
Girdles
Girdle sizes are typically the waist size. Unlike a corset, a girdle can be a size larger than your natural size to allow for comfortable shaping. It should control but not constrict.
