Lady Liberty: A Monument To Freedom

Ranked #11,608 in Travel & Places, #289,460 overall

She is a beautiful symbol of our country and holds such meaning for us. I also find the story behind the Statue of Liberty extremely interesting. My son and I both enjoy learning more about her history and importance to Americans.

Did you know...

~ Visitors used to be able to climb the circular single-file stairs inside the metallic statue and view New York Harbor from the crown through 25 windows

~ There are 354 steps inside the statue and its pedestal

~ The jewels beneath the seven rays of the diadem are actually windows

~ Engineered to withstand heavy winds which can cause the Statue to sway 3 inches (7.62 cm) and the torch to sway 5 inches (12.7 cm). This allows the Statue to move rather than break in high wind load conditions

~ The statue is 305 feet tall from pedestal to torch

~ The length of a hand is 16 feet 5 inches

~ The length of the index finger is 8 feet

~ The weight of the steel used in the Statue is 250,000 pounds
