Lake Atitlan

Lake Atitlan in Guatemala is the most beautiful place in the world. It is surrounded by 12 Mayan villages, including Panajachel, named after the apostles in the bible, and 3 gigantic volcanoes.

Floating 1 mile above sea level, Lake Atitlan enjoys a perfect climate, throughout the year. I've seen people put their thermometers in the refrigerator to verify that they are not broken, stuck at 72 degrees F. Six months each year you will not see a single rain drop. Even in the rainy season, it usually rains only at night.

The Mayans who live around Lake Atitlan make it the most exotic and fun travel destination in the New World. It is also inexpensive, MUCH cheaper than Mexico, for example. A maid to clean the house and do the laundry would work 4 hours, two days per a week, would be very happy with $50 USD per month. A gardener would get a similar monthly payment.

Because of the perfect climate, low cost of living, and friendly people, many people retire to the Lake Atitlan area. You can live like a king on a monthly Social Security check. The Mayan villages around Lake Atitlan have crime rates lower than in the United States.
