Landscaping a Small Backyard
Landscaping a small backyard can actually be a blessing in disguise. Most homeowners picture the big backyard with acres of grass and beautifully landscaped areas. They see pictures of vast open areas, with trees and planted gardens, benches to sit upon and woodland to gaze at. Now although that may be an ideal image, the reality is that you need to take care of all that acreage. Once we get out the mower, spend tons of money on mulch and almost all our time weeding and pruning, that picture doesn't look all that appealling anymore.
If you are faced with a small space, there is lots you can do with it. You won't be able to go overboard with plantings and patios, but you can still have a very enjoyable space. In addition, it's less time consuming and leaves you with plenty to enjoy it. Read on for some great tips for landscaping a small backyard area.

Landscaping a Small Backyard - Use Containers!
Using Containers is a Great Way to Add Plants to a Small Space
Using containers is a good idea if you are landscaping a small backyard. Containers come in so many different varieties of materials and sizes, that they can fit into anyone's budget and decor. They can be placed and moved about anywhere and plants can be replaced easily if they die or get too large. You could even do vegetables or herbs for an edible garden on a small patio. This is especially great for apartment dwellers in the city. My uncle, who's lived in Manhattan all his life, always had a terrace garden full of plants.

Landscaping a Small Backyard - Don't Box Me In!
You don't have to keep everything in straight lines when landscaping a small backyard space
Curved walkways and paths that lead along rounded planter beds create the illusion of more space. They flow from one area to the next and have a way of making you feel that you are meandering along a large open area instead of feeling boxed in and small.
Money Saving Tip
If you know one of your neighbors will be doing landscaping at the same time you are, try splitting the cost of tool rentals and equipment
Landscaping a Small Backyard - Using Water Features
Just because you are landscaping a small backyard space doesn't mean you can't add a water feature. Ponds and containers full of water do not have to be large. You can do small features that will fit in your area.Water features can be store bought or made from materials you buy. All that is needed is a small pump, a few containers and, of course, water! A birdbath can also double as a water feature. Some come with fountains that please both you and the birds and are great features to add when landscaping a small backyard.

- Hey, great lens! Landscaping your garden can create a lot of waste, so one thing to keep in mind is to make sure you use a professional skip hire company so they don't illegally dump it.

- You would think that landscaping a small space would be fairly easy. But too often since there is only so much to work with you end up overdoing it and it looks too busy.
