VIVA LAS VEGAS! An Englishman's Journey...
I absolutely love Las Vegas with a passion! I decided to put this lens together to share this passion with you.
I first discovered its attraction on an anniversary trip with my wife. We had visited America before on family holidays-the usual Disney thing-but decided that it was time for a grown-ups break! And what a break it was.
From the second we touched down at McCarren airport and the heat smacked us between the eyes (Hey,I'm English. We only have two temperatures -cold and bloody cold)until the time we took off home again, we had a non-stop blast. I can honestly say that we had the kind of holiday where everything and yes, I do mean everything, went perfectly.
People forget that Vegas is more than just gambling (although I am a bit nifty at Texas Hold 'Em). There is just so much to do. From the mega resort casinos themselves, to the Grand Canyon you can only be bored here if you're dead!
The only thing I didn't like was the gaggle of Latinos standing on the sidewalk handing out pictures and phone numbers of their mothers/sisters/daughters in various seductive poses. But hey, it's Vegas. Sin City and all that...
A (little) Bit of History
Las Vegas is the most populous city in the state of Nevada, United States, the seat of Clark County, and an internationally renowned resort, shopping, entertainment, and gambling destination. It was established in 1905 and officially became a city in 1911.The center of gambling in the United States and the world, Las Vegas is commonly known as The Entertainment Capital of the World; famous for its massive and lavish casino resorts, availability of alcoholic beverages at any time (as is true throughout Nevada), and various degrees of adult entertainment.
The Cockney Invasion... (well, me and the missus really)
Every other time we visted, we stayed at the Flamingo due to it's location...bang in the middle of the strip. Magic! And, I found that if you talk in a 'Gawd Awlmighty-Awright my son' cockney accent, the nice lady at the check-in gives you a nice room overlooking the Bellagio fountains. Result. What is it about the cockney accent with the Americans anyway?
Bally's...who knows. I'll let you know when I get back. Lock up your daughter's America...(don't tell the missus! And,to be honest, don't worry about your daughters too much. Look out for yer mum though!)
The Return
Some thoughts
The second thing that got us was the lack of decoration! I honestly thought that there would be more glitz and glamour-baubles and neon everywhere (more than normal), but no! I can understand the casinos not having things hanging from the ceiling as it would interfere with the 'eyes in the sky' but I thought there would be more outside. Oh well, can't have it all.
We did and saw some marvellous things as usual and I'll get around to blogging about those things we would most definitely recommend soon. In the meantime, if you're going to Vegas then you just have to see the Skywalk at the Grand Canyon. Absolutely terrifying and magnificent at the same time, this was an incredible experience that was breathtaking. You just HAVE to do it. My only gripe was the cold. It was absolutely bitter when we went so if you're going in the winter time, wrap up big time!
Cirque Du Soleil
Let's get one thing clear. Half the time I have no idea what the story is about. I'm not into all that 'Expressing myself through the medium of dance' nonsense, so the 'story' part goes way over my head. I like what I like and the visuals combined with the music combined with the breathtaking feats of athleticism make these a joy to see.
We have seen Mystere, Ka and on this trip Love. All of these are brilliant but for me, Love was outstanding. A homage to the music of the Beatles, this had everything you could possible want in a show. Some of the best music the Beatles ever produced combined with those stunning visuals made this the best of the bunch...so far. A must see.">
