Lateral Thinking Puzzles for Fun and Intelligence

Lateral Thinking Puzzles are great fun and a good way to stimulate a group of children or students and can help to boost your intellect but they are also used by innovators and inventors to create new ideas and products for companies.

Lateral Thinking Puzzles, unlike most puzzles, are inexact. In a sense, they are a cross between puzzles and storytelling. In each puzzle, some clues to a scenario are given, but the clues don't tell the full story. Your job is to fill in the details and complete the story. Obviously, there is usually more than one answer to any given puzzle, but, in general, only one solution is truly satisfying.

Solving Lateral Thinking Puzzles is most fun as a group activity with people shouting out answers in a similar way to charades, the puzzle poser decides whether an answer is Cold, Warm or Hot

Romeo and Juliet the Classic Lateral Thinking Puzzle

This was first LTP puzzle I came across I was so baffled and excited by it

Romeo and Juliet are dead. They are in a locked room on the 29th floor. There is a table in the room, a puddle and some broken glass. The wind is blowing the curtains of the only window in the room. Apart from the bodies of the recently deceased, there is nothing else in the room. How did Romeo and Juliet die?

How to Ask a Lateral Thinking Question

Initially you just give them the original question.
If they have never come across lateral thinking puzzles (LTP) then they will be totally baffled and you may have to prompt them a little
Basically they have to ask questions, and you answer , yes, no, may be.
With enough questions they will get there

Why Are So Many Lateral Thinking Puzzles Morbid?

Well it's because the mystery requires a silent witness, one you cannot ask! This is why of course so many detective stories require a body, the dead cannot talk.

Why Are Lateral Thinking Puzzles So Useful?

  1. Increase and stretch your or your children's intelligence
  2. Make intellectual activity fun
  3. Amuse a bored group of children or students
  4. Save your life, did you ever see the film Castaway with Tom Hanks, did you see the incredible number of ways he was able to make use of apparently useless objects he found in the FedEx parcels?
  5. Make you more employable by thinking of novel solutions to your company's problems
  6. Pass the time when you are stuck in traffic, have a delayed flight etc

Answer: Man Dead in a Field Clutching a Broken Match

A group of people fleeing a repressive county in a hot-air balloon needed to lose weight to gain height to get over the mountain range at the frontier.

They drew straws to see who would have to jump out

Answer: Yacht with Drowned People

It was a lovely hot day, every one dived into the water, nobody remember to put the ladder over the side. (This unfortunately has happened in real life)

Also it can be a problem if everyone jumps off and the boat lifts in the water so the ladder is too difficult to reach.

Essential safety Rule : Somebody must always remain on board!

Answer : Why Not Square Manhole Covers?

A really practical example

A square manhole cover can be turned and accidentally dropped down the diagonal of the manhole. This cannot occur with a round manhole. So for safety and practicality, all manhole covers should be round.

Techniques for Solving Lateral Thinking Puzzles

Challenging Assumptions

Lateral Thinking Puzzles are carefully worded so look for anything odd in the description, anything odd, too precise or too vague.

Red Herrings: Warning there may be a Red Herring designed to put you off the scent.

Male/Female Assumption : If the LTP talks of a Surgeon or Lawyer you may be expected to incorrectly assume it is a man.

Unusual Physique: Dwarfs,Deaf,Blind etc

Ice: Ice melts, dries and disappears could have been a stepping stone, or a weapon

Infidelity: As usual this is a strong motive for a crime

Assumptions: Analyze the puzzle for assumptions that you might be expected to make, then challenge these

What is a Lateral Thinking Puzzle?

How does a Lateral Thinking Puzzle differ from a Normal Puzzle?

The distinction between Lateral Thinking Puzzles and ordinary puzzles is not always clear but I think in a normal puzzle no matter how difficult you are given all the information necessary to solve the puzzle. Lateral Thinking Puzzles however require you to imagine the intermediate information.

For me the following isn't a lateral thinking puzzle.

"Why are 1983 pennies worth more than 1967 pennies?"

Lateral Thinking Puzzles are also called Situation Puzzles. Situation puzzles are often referred to as lateral thinking puzzles or "yes/no" puzzles. (Quote from Wikipedia)

Situation puzzles are usually played in a group, with one person hosting the puzzle and the others asking questions which can only be answered with a "yes" or "no" answer. Depending upon the settings and level of difficulty, other answers, hints or simple explanations of why the answer is yes or no, may be considered acceptable. The puzzle is solved when one of the players is able to recite the narrative the host had in mind, in particular explaining whatever aspect of the initial scenario was puzzling.

These puzzles are inexact and many puzzle statements have more than one possible fitting answer. The goal however is to find out the story as the host has it in mind. Critical thinking and reading, logical thinking, as well as lateral thinking may all be required to solve a situation puzzle. The term lateral thinking was coined by Edward De Bono to denote a creative problem-solving style that involves looking at the given situation from unexpected angles, and is typically necessary to the solution of situation puzzles

The Two Trains

(Not a lateral thinking puzzle)

A man visits his girlfriend once a week. They both live near stations on a circular railroad on very nearly opposite sides so the man never cares which direction he takes, just takes the first train which arrives.

Nevertheless he takes the clockwise train 5 times more frequently than the anti-clockwise train.

Why?

The Bus Stop

You are driving down the road in your car on a wild, stormy night, when you pass by a bus stop and you see three people waiting for the bus

  • An old lady who looks as if she is about to die.
  • An old friend who once saved your life.
  • The perfect partner you have been dreaming about.

    Answer below

(I can't work out whether this is just a conventional puzzle, but in any case it is a very interesting one)
  • Answer: Trains on the Circle Line

One train arrives at 20 past the hour and the second at 30 past the hour. He therefore only takes the second if it arrives at the station between 20 and 30 minutes past the hour

Answer: Waiting at the Bus Stop

You give your keys to your friend and ask him to take the old lady to a hospital. You remain with your mightily impressed dream partner!.

Now would you have been able to think that quickly?

How many people in a room before there is a 50% chance that two share a Birthday?

    The Birthday Paradox

Well the answer is just 23!

For it to be practically certain that two people share a birthday there need be just 57 in the room.

A simplistic way of understanding this is as follows.

I stand up in my class and say who else has a birthday on the 28th of February: no answer.
A 2nd person stands up and says who else has a birthday on October 13th? Now his chance of a match is slightly higher because the 28th of Feb is ALREADY eliminated.
a 3rd person stands and his chance of a match are even higher because the previous 2 days are eliminated
    and so on

The birthday paradox is a another example where so called "common sense" answer leads to the wrong answer. Apparently this paradox it is one of the reasons why bookmaking odds are WORSE than they appear.

    This is just a riddle

You overhear a man talking to a clerk in a hardware store. The clerk says "One will cost you 15 cents, ten will cost your 30 cents, and one hundred will cost you 45 cents.

    Why?

    An Unusual Conundrum

This is an unusual conundrum, and also an unusual paragraph. How fast can you find out what is so uncommon
about this paragraph? It may look ordinary, and you may think nothing is odd about it. That is, until you match it with
most paragraphs this long. Think about it, study it, and you will find out, but do it on your own, without any coaching.
Just go to work and try your skill at figuring it out.
