American Comedy/Variety TV Show, 1968-73, Broadcast On NBC
This show was the brainchild of comics Dan Rowan and Dick Martin, and was America's response to Monty Python's Flying Circus. Rowan and Martin were among the first to openly ridicule society and break many of the taboos in TV back then: they voiced opposition to the Vietnam War, showcased the rebellion and current events of the late 60's and had girls dancing in bikinis showing their (gasp) belly buttons! (Not even Cher or Barbara Eden got to do that!) But it still adhered to the standard variety show format, with lots of one liners, elaborate costumes and dance numbers.
Laugh-In brought many new talents to TV: Goldie Hawn, Ruth Buzzi, Joanne Worley, Lily Tomlin, Arte Johnson, Henry Gibson, Gary Owens, Judy Carne and Eileen Brennen. The list of guest stars was just as impressive, too: John Wayne, Jack Benny, Cher, The Monkees, Ringo Starr, Tiny Tim, just to name a few.
This was such a great show! I got to stay up late to watch it, which was always a treat. The comedy was so goofy, funny and gentle, and seems so innocent compared with the world today.
I highly recommend buying this series now that it's out on DVD. You can watch it with the whole family!
