A popular type is called English Lavender which has over 40 different named varieties. I will share herbal and culinary uses of this amazing herb. Lavender is known for its great stress relieving qualities too! As well, I will show you some great recipes using lavender and share some great gift ideas. Lavender is used in all kinds of bath and body products and is used to make wonderful teas and lemonades as well.

Description of Lavender


Lavender bushes range in growth from about 6 inches to 4 feet tall depending on the variety. The leaves of the lavender plant are oblong and tapered in shape and range from a dusty green colour to a silvery grey. The blooms range in color from a grayish blue to a vibrant purple. There are some species with blooms of other colors such as white and pinks. Very little care is required for lavender to flourish. It is a herb that will bloom year after year.

It may help releive symtoms of insomnia, anxiety and stress. Lavender has been called the 'Stress Releaser' herb. Inhaling the scent of lavender has been known to bring about a calmness and peace to individuals. This oil can be used as a great massage oil as well. It is used in many spa's around the world. Lavender is also known to have anti-bacterial qualities and is very soothing to the body.

Uses of Lavender


Products that are made for the body from the lavender plant consist of:

-tinctures

It is recommended that herbs should be taken with care and always check with a health care provider, or a naturopathic doctor if you are unsure. Using products made with herbs could possibly trigger reactions in some individuals that may be on medications or taken supplements ect.

Lavender and Rose Petal Potpourri

For this recipe you will need:

4 cups lavender (dried)
2 cups rose petals (dried)
2 cups rosemary (dried)
1 ounce orris root
3 - 6 drops of lavender oil

Mix herbs and oil with the orris root. Then place in sealed container. You must shake this mixture daily so the fragrance blends together. Then age for approximtely 4 to 5 weeks. It is then ready to use in potpourri sachets or to fill decorative bowls.

Tip

Place a dish of dried lavender in your work area, or on your desk to relieve any stress.

Lavender Eye Pillows

These eye pillows are simple to make and are very soothing to the eyes.

To make this recipe:

To make a small, rectangular shaped eye pillow from the fabric of your choice.Something like soft organza is very nice to use. Comes in many colors too. Simply cut the shape out and sew three and 1/2 sides together with the fabric inside out. Then turn the fabric right side out and fill the pillow loosely with equal parts of lavender and flaxseeds. The flaxseeds can be purchase at a health food store. Then stitch the last of the pillow together and add a pretty ribbon bow to the top or leave it plain, whatever you like. To relieve eye stress while laying down place the pillow directly over closed eyes to benefit from the soothing lavender properties. This makes a lovely gift too! Package in a pretty gift box and give one to a friend or co-worker.

Lavender Lemondade

type=textRecipe for Lavender Lemonade

Refreshing drink on a warm summer day! This recipe serves approx. 16 8 oz. glasses.

3 cups sugar
7 sprigs lavender (stems and buds), extra for a garnish
2 cups fresh lemon juice ( about 12 lemons)
1/2 cup fresh lime juice ( about 5 limes)
In a large saucepan, bring one gallon of water and the sugar to a boil. Remove from heat; add 7 lavender sprigs and lemon and lime juices. Cool to room temperature, strain, and chill. Serve on ice, with additional lavender for garnish.
