Leaky Gut Syndrome...What is it?

L

eaky gut syndrome is when the intestinal wall can not keep out large unwanted molecules.

Leaky gut syndrome is associated with autism.

Much has been learned about this disease, although it is still being researched. There are actually quite a number of studies going on now to determine how the syndrome actually gets started in the first place and why it seems to be prevalent in autistic children and how to treat it.

The working theory is that the syndrome occurs in autistic children because of their increased sensitivity and allergies.

The toxins are able to pass through the damaged wall of the small intestine

W

hen toxins, bacteria and partially digested food are able to pass through the wall of the small intestine and enter the bloodstream, this is the condition Leaky Gut Syndrome. In layman terms large spaces occur in between the cells that make up the wall of the intestine or gut, since these spaces exist in the gut wall, bacterial, toxins, and food can find their way into the bloodstream.

When you have this condition of a damaged intestinal wall, damaged cells called microvilli become unable to do their job. Which means they can not produce the enzymes that are vital to good digestion. So digestion becomes impaired. Absorption of nutrients is affected, and damaging substances are able to invade the bloodstream. Because this is not a normal occurrence the body misunderstands and goes into action to protect the body from this invading intruder. This body may think this is a virus or an infection and start creating antibodies to fight the invaders. The body responds to this with inflammation, allergic reactions, and other very unpleasant symptoms.

This is particularly bad because normal things such as certain foods or any of the body's normal molecules that are similar to those foods would be looked at as harmful by the body's immune system. This causes an auto-immune disease which is the same as the body attacking itself.

Some Common Causes of Leaky Gut Syndrome

Could allergies be the culprit?

O

ther serious outcomes of Leaky Gut Syndrome would include the normal bacteria that is normally found in the intestine to be transported into the blood stream allowing it to circulate until it lands somewhere new and then develops into an infection. This of course, also weakens the liver, which causes more toxins to travel throughout the whole body, leading to even more medical complications.

Some experts contend that the most common cause of this condition is ingesting foods that you are allergic to. A diet high in alcohol or caffeine, drugs known as NSAIDS, (non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs), such as ibuprofen, Motrin, Aleve, and antacids, as well as a diet high in carbohydrates can cause a thinning of the intestinal wall, which leads to leaky gut syndrome.

It Is Better to Heal The Gut

R

ather than treating the superficial symptoms associated with leaky gut syndrome, it seems more prudent to choose a course of treatment that will focus on healing the gut. There are several different paths to healing a leaky gut. The primary ones are removing candida yeast and parasites, the use of digestive enzymes, using probiotics, proper diet and nutritional supplements.

About this book:

Product Description

It's an odd name, we've all heard of a broken leg, a bleeding ulcer, a ruptured appendix, a torn ligament - but a leaky gut? Although it has been known in the field of gastroenterology the Leaky Gut Syndrome seems like one of the best-kept secrets. This condition has slowly come into focus as a possible cause of many other conditions. New light has been shed on health problems that were once considered "unknown" or "incurable." This easy to understand yet very detailed book provides astonishing answers and remedies to this condition. Dr. Pagano uses his experience as a physician to show that the Leaky Gut Syndrome is something to be taken seriously and not brushed aside as an interesting but unimportant theory.

Some experts contend that the most common cause of this condition is ingesting foods that you are allergic to.

Some Recognized Causes of Leaky Gut Syndrome

O

f course, it is possible (and likely) that other factors contribute to leaky gut syndrome as well. Aside from the possibility that ingesting allergens causes this condition, it is thought that the following issues can cause this ailment:

  • Diets that consist of refined sugar
  • Diets that are too low in fiber
  • The use of some drugs, including antibiotics
  • Parasitic infections
  • Poor digestion
  • Candidiasis
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Pathogenic bacteria
  • Nonpathogenic bacteria, such as Klebsiella or Pseudomonas
  • Zinc defieciency
  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin and ibuprofen

There Are Some Obvious First Choices

Autism seems to be heavily targeted.

A

utistic children are even more susceptible to leaky gut syndrome than adults, due to their very sensitive digestive systems. Many parents find that putting their child on gluten- and casein- free diets can help. However, both gluten and casein are proteins, and this may inflame leaky gut syndrome, so caution is advised. Of course in adults the obvious first things to be done that may help are to avoid alcohol, caffeine, NSAIDS and spicy foods. This may help to thicken the intestine wall and not allow those proteins and molecules to escape.

Some comfort can be obtained by understanding leaky gut syndrome. It is an ongoing process. But at least you can know there is an actual process going on causing the symptoms you are seeing in yourself or your child.

Well, I might have to pay closer attention

poddys says:

I think I might, since I do get severe indigestion and burning and have to take medication for it. I used to take a lot of Aspirin years ago, and also take Ibuprofen and Antacids. I have eaten lots of spicy foods in my past, so maybe a diet change will help this. I would like to not be reliant on medicines that I don't feel I can trust.

Heather426 says:

I used to, but cured it with probiotics.

BlakeCzirr says:

The theory is interesting to me, specifically in how it relates to autistic children.

Margo_Arrowsmith says:

Some, yes. I am very healthy, but yes

jaye3000 says:

The changes I saw in my son after beginning the GFCF diet were amazing. This was a good sign, because it told me that this just may be fixable :)

No, I'm healthy as a horse.

The-Insider says:

Very interesting topic.

ArtByLinda says:

No, thank goodness!

nightbear says:

Well, not healthy as a horse, but I don't seem to have any of these symptoms that would make me suspicious.

GI System Is Responsible For Keeping the Immune System Healthy

A

lthough leaky gut syndrome is very common, it is hard to treat and can lead to many serious diseases. Doctors now believe that the gastrointestinal tract is responsible for keeping the immune system in good working order and that when it is not functioning properly the body becomes susceptible to many diseases, especially autoimmune diseases.
