Sew much fun...

Sewing is such a rewarding activity. And it's not just for grandmas.

I learned how to sew when I was 11. My mom taught me the basics and in high school I learned a little more. I have been at it ever since. It has been a creative outlet for me as well as a very nice way to save a little dough.

You wouldn't believe the money that you can save just by making it yourself. Below I have some advice on why you might want to learn how to sew. Not just for fun but also for practical reasons.

You do have to get supplies however. Time is also an issue. If you are willing to investing in these things, your imagination is the limit! See a skirt in the store that you adore but not crazy about the hem length, fix it yourself. Want a fresh new look in your bedroom window but don't like the fabric choices at the store, sew your own with any fabric you choose. You get the point. If it has to do with fabric and thread you can do it, it just takes the time and willingness to learn.

So if your up for the challenge why not?

3 things you should know about Sewing

1. You don't have to be a rocket scientist or even particularly crafty to sew. You should have seen some of the boys in home-economics class that got the job done.

2. Watch where your fingers are at all times. Those needles have a funny way of sneaking up on you when your not paying attention.

3. It can get quite addicting. Give me more fabric give a rainbow of thread.

Start Small

You can't climb Everest in a day.

Pick something little to begin with. A book cover or maybe a simple sack for groceries. Or even better yet just practice the different stitches on a scrap piece of fabric. Save yourself the frustration by starting small and not jumping into a huge project like altering that favorite dress that is too big since you lost some weight or sewing a king size quilt for your bed. Don't worry you will get there, baby steps.

Well what are you waiting for? Get sewing!

Start sewing on the cheap! Basic sewing machines really are not that expensive. You can test the waters for about 65-80 bucks. You can also check local garage sales for a used sewing machine. If you want to start really small you can get a needle and thread and sew a small applique or a little coin purse or maybe mend that pesky hole in your sock.
