Learn How to Speak French For Free: Tips and Tricks

I want you to ask yourself a question.

"What can I do to start immersing myself in French right now?" Many people don't take their life as part of their learning environment and lose out on a great resource.

So, what was the answer? Is there any way you could live a Frencher life? Maybe you have some French-speaking friends with whom to practice. Maybe you're already living in France or a French-speaking country! Maybe you use an operating system on your computer that lets you change its language. Or maybe none of these apply to you. Whatever the case, taking a moment to think about your starting point will help you best make use of all that is available to you. Immersion is not as far away as you think! I've been using my computer primarily in French for quite some time now; it helps! In fact, when I use a system in English it's actually started feefling a bit foreign...to me, at least, that's cool!

One thing that I've done, and that you can try too, is to download the programs you use daily in French if a version exists. As I write this, I'm using the French version of Firefox and have also set my preferred Web page language to French. This means that, as I browse, I'm constantly faced with Web pages in French; this helps a lot with retaining what I've learned and getting more comfortable with the language.

I also use Windows itself in French. If you have Windows Vista Ultimate Edition or Windows 7 Ultimate Edition, you can do this too.

This works particularly well if you after learning a touch of French, but you can dive right in too. It's a lot of fun, and before you know it you stop noticing things are in French all the time and can simply read them.

I have given the example of using the computer here because I do that a lot, but you could apply it to any activity. The more you learn, the more you can do. Imagine:

• Contacting customer service in French!


• Searching Google in French!


• Making your travel reservations in French!


• Making your notes to yourself in French!

I haven't yet made travel reservations in French, but I've done the rest, and being able to do it is such a liberating feeling. I hope I can share it with you through this page.

Choosing methods that fit you well is important when learning French. There are so many that it can take a bit to find the ones you like. You have to experiment a bit.

My final tip on this page is simply to implement these tips - those for both offline and online learning. The more effort you put in, the better and more lasting your results will be.

See if you can do one thing today to immerse yourself in French. And keep doing so as you progress. Don't worry about traveling to somewhere French-speaking right away (if you don't already live there); in my opinion, it's better to be somewhat prepared so that you have a solid base to improve upon. I read this article once that said people who learn a language on-the-fly in a foreign country often learn a "pidgin" form of it, rather than learning properly. So if you don't want to sound like the French equivalent of someone saying, "Like-ee soup-ee?" then don't sweat it and take the time to learn.

One more thing: A course that can help you combine these methods is included. You can put the lessons onto your iPod and listen to them on the go. You can also do them online.
