Australia's Finest: Heath Ledger
Heath Ledger (born April 4, 1979 - died January 22, 2008)
Already something of an established actor in his native Australia, upon Ledger's move to the United States, he appeared in "10 Things I Hate About You", but he felt as though he was being stereotyped as a he-babe, and as a result, he took as many serious roles as he could.
The result: an Oscar nomination for Ang Lee's cowboy drama, "Brokeback Mountain" and the plum role of the Joker in Christopher Nolan's Batman sequel, "The Dark Knight".
Here are his thoughts on his celebrity:
"My ambition is all in my head. I'm on a journey. I'm on a walkabout. It's about collecting wisdom of emotions and heart and self and understanding. Being absolutely comfortable with your body and life and the Earth, sun and moon being the only truths.
That's what my success is, getting underneath that. At the end of the day, that's the only thing you're going to carry with you when you die."

"10 Things I Hate About You" is based on Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew, and revolves around two sisters Bianca (Larisa Oleynik) and Katarina "Kat" Stratford (Julia Stiles).
Bianca is the popular sister who wants to start dating a popular boy, Joey Donner (Andrew Keegan) and Kat is the social outcast.
Trying to keep his daughters from dating, for fear they may get pregnant, their paranoid father (Larry Miller) makes a family rule where Bianca cannot date until Kat does, which seems impossible.
New kid Cameron (Joseph Gordon Levitt) has a huge crush on Bianca and, thinking Bianca likes him in return and wants to date him, he and his friend Michael Eckman (David Khumoltz) devise a scheme where they try to pair Kat off with the school "Bad Boy" Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger).
By reading the basic plot above, you probably think this is just another teen flick. Well, though technically a teen flick, it lacks the shallowness of other movies of this genre. With witty dialogue, some very funny physical stunts, some great acting, and a hip soundtrack headlined by Letters To Cleo, this film is a definite must own.

lauragioia says:
Yes it is, but I would be surprised if he was nominated. It is a 'negative' role, while in the past only 'not normal' characters were chosen if they conveyed a positive message. Also the film is not strongly linked to a Jewish background, that also seem to be one of the factors that allow some films and actors to win oscars when other films should have.

- Wow! I am so impressed by what you put together here...it is fan-tabulous!
Loved Brokeback Mountain. It was so far from the drag or flamboyant impressions left in a lot of 'gay' movies. I've not seen him as The Joker yet, on my to-watch list though!

- It`s very sad that we won`t be seeing any more incredible acting from this young man. He was one of the best actors I`ve seen, not just the hottest, but he brought realism to the screen.

- I first saw Heath Ledger in the short-run TV series "Roar", which I LOVED! They quit making the series because it was too expensive, not because it didn't have enough viewers. My favorite Heath Ledger movie is easily "A Knight's Tale". How sad that he has so soon moved on to the after. Perhaps he is entertaing the angels with his talent now.
