Gas Mileage Hints and Tips

High Gas Prices. Its the talk of the town right now and there seems to be no end in sight. Thats why its increasingly important to make sure you vehicle is running at its peak performance. There are many reason why your car will burn excessive gas and I will list a few of the major important items to look for.

#1. Underinflated tires/worn tires . Tires tend to be a very overlooked part on most vehicles. Its kind of scary when those four tires are the only things that actually touch the road surface.

Other than being a safety hazard, underinflated tires cause uneven wear and decrease overall gas mileage. Although this will not drastically lower gas mileage it will have some negative effect. And it is a very easy fix that most drivers can remedy themselves.

#2. Engines that are running rough .

Every vehicle with an internal combustion engine needs to be properly tuned in order to get the most of each gallon of gas. Spark plugs, spark plug wires, air filters and such need to be changed at certain intervals. Each vehicle make is different and driving conditions can shorten those intervals. A qualified technician will ba able to tell you if it is time for any maintenance your vehicle may need.

At Lee Myles Transmssions and Auto Care of Allentown, we offer a comprehensive V.I.P. check for all customers at no charge. It is basically a "physical" for your vehicle. We will certainly find any tune up issues and will check with manufacturers specifications on regular maintenance schedules.

#3. Driving over speed limits .
Thats right. Driving in speeds excess of 55 MPH can drastically reduce gas mileage. So slow down and enjoy the ride. You will see a dramatic reduction in your gas mileage.

#4. Automatic or Standard Transmission Malfunction.

All transmssions are designed to create a smooth transition between gears and give you the proper gear ratio for the speed you are driving. Any problem with your transmission can create over revving in your engine and burn excess gas.

Transmission repairs can also be costly so it is a good idea to get them looked at quickly to minimize damage. At our repair center transmssions are our specialty. We can give you a free evaluation of your transmission and let you know of necessary repairs.(if any)

#5. Emissions related failures .
All vehicles built from 1996-on have a emmissions diagnostic system built in that is required by federal law -OBDII (On-Board Diagnostics).
The emmission control components in your car are sopisticated and will often kick a " check-engine " light on when malfunctioning. These components can alter the way your vehicle burns fuel and cause the engine to run rich. What this means to you is more $ for gas.
Do not ingore " check engine " lights. They were put there for a reason; to warn you of an emmission system failure.

These are a few ways to conserve on gas that are related to your vehicle. Obviously the best way to save on fuel costs is to limit driving. But in our hectic lives that is often not an option. So put these steps to good use and make your vehicle is in proper running order.

We at Lee Myles Transmission and Auto Care of Allentown can help answer any questions you may have about your vehicle's performance. Please feel free to contact us at #610-437-3040.

How Much Will My Transmission Repair Cost?

This is one of the most common questions we are asked and I would like to dispell some rumors relating to Transmission repairs.

In the early 1980's, vehicle manufacturers started implementing many electronic controls on their automatic transmission systems.

Many times transmission related failures are minor in nature because of these new electronic components. It is very important to take your vehicle to a capable repair shop so you dont overspend on an uneeded repair.

Some newer tranmissions have shared components with the driveabilty systems and a simple sensor can cause severe problems. Up to 50% of repairs at our center are electronic in nature and can be fixed for a fraction of a rebuild cost.

Here at Lee Myles Transmission Allentown we pride ourselves in being able to pinpoint the problem with your vehicle. The worst repair is the one that you never needed, so it is important to have a full understanding of your vehicles tranmsission system.

You can have confidence that the recommended repair will be the one that will repair you vehicle correctly the first time. Our goal is to charge you the least possible for the best job possible.
