Legoland Florida Becomes A Reality

Legoland Florida is here, in Florida. It is the second, full scale Legoland theme park in the United States and the fifth Legoland park in the world. The toy-based theme park is located on the old Cypress Gardens site, in Winter Haven, Florida. It includes 50 rides, shows, and the attractions similar to Legoland California, the only other U.S. Legoland theme park.

What does Florida Legoland have in its park?

Everything Lego-themed, including water rides, replicas of cities and buildings, and fun activities, like their other Legoland parks. Legoland parks have LEGO-built statues lining walkways, gardens, shops, and rides. The statues are built with regular Lego bricks to inspire kids to use their imaginations and build their own creations.

Brief History: Legoland theme parks are in Germany, Denmark, California, and England. Legoland California does not rank in the top 20 American theme parks, but it's showing growth since it opened in 1999. Legoland California, named the U.S. Best Theme Park for Kids for six consecutive years by Amusement Today, sites an six percent increase in 2009 guests. In 2008, visitors to all four Legoland parks worldwide reached 35.1 million guests.

Merlin Entertainments, from Britain, purchased the Cypress Gardens land with plans to turn it into Legoland Florida. Phase one of Legoland Florida included hotels and convention centers. Phase two included the park itself, a Lego-themed amusement park, with water rides, huge Lego statues, and of course, places to buy and build Lego toys.

The Legoland Florida park is unique, as it maintains Cypress Gardens' 32 acres of beautiful, landscaped gardens.

One nearby, popular LEGO-inspired attraction is the LEGO Imagination Center, a retail store located inside Disney Marketplace in Orlando, Florida. Visitors are greeted by a LEGO Loch Ness in the lake. Statues of kids, dog, visitors, and T-Rex are made entirely of LEGOs and stand outside the LEGO store.

Kids can shop for LEGO pieces, sets, and even order an engraved LEGO brick. Disney Marketplace Lego Shop also offers birthday parties. There are only two LEGO Imagination Centers is the U.S.; the first LEGO Imagination Center (built in 1992) is located in the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota.

Lego Loch Ness at Disney Marketplace

Many LEGO fans may not be able to head to Legoland California, Germany, England, or Denmark. For fans close to Orlando Florida, the closest place is the LEGO Shop in Disney's Marketplace. In front of the store, rising from the waterway is the LEGO Loch Ness monster. The entrance includes a LEGO-built family, including their dogs. The shop offers popular LEGO sets, like LEGO Star Wars, LEGO Toy Story, and more. Kids can buy LEGO bricks by pieces including LEGO mats and minifigs.

What is Merlin Entertainments?

You may not have heard of Merlin Entertainments, yet the company is the second largest of all theme park companies. Disney remains in first place of theme park companies. Merlin Entertainments, from Britain, owns many well-known amusement parks, including Madam Tussaud's wax museums, 30 Sea Life parks, and the London Eye ferris wheel.

The Blackstone Group, the parent company, owns a majority of Merlin Entertainments. The Blackstone Group also owns popular theme parks, including its acquisition of Busch Gardens Florida. As many people see Florida as a great destination for theme and water parks, The Blackstone Group owns the majority of Florida parks.

Aren't Florida Attractions Owned by Disney?

Visitors may even equate Florida parks with Disney, which owns four popular attractions, including Disney's Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom and Epcot. The Blackstone Group owns six major, Florida theme parks, including Legoland Florida, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, SeaWorld Orlando, Discovery Cove, Universal Studios Florida, and Universal's Islands of Adventure.

Lego Land Florida : Is It A Good Idea?

Controversy surrounded the building of Legoland Florida, based on the location.

Winter Haven, Florida is away from the popular and major attractions of Disney, Sea World, Universal, and Epcot, which are easily accessible from I-4. Legoland Florida will be approximately 50 to 60 miles away from the I-4 attractions. The drive to Legoland Florida is 30 minute-drive on a poor roadway.

The previous theme park, Cypress Gardens, was built in the 1930's and never had the number of visitors comparable to any of Disney's theme parks. One concern with Legoland Florida is that with its huge attraction, visitors could overwhelm the park.

With its opening, another issue is the high cost. The park charges $75 per adult; $64 per children. It'd be a steep cost for a family vacation, though others argue it's approximately the same as other big theme parks.

What do you think? Is Legoland Florida a good Idea? Is the cost worth the fun?

No, I'm not interested in Legos or a Lego theme park.

It is too bad they are pricing themselves out of visitors. I'm sure many would love to take their children but if they have a few the cost will deter them.
