Lemonade Diet and how it really works
This is dedicated to all those who believe there is a better solution to getting healthy that that of the usual medical formula, too many pills and not enough cures. We want to get more quality information out there to the people, from the Lemonade Diet and cleansing to the right choices as alternative to the medicine that just needs another prescription.
The Lemonade Diet Really Works... How?
Why the Lemonade Diet handles so many health problems
I'm frequently asked about taking supplements or psyllium husk while on the Lemonade Diet. My answer up till now has been not to do it because I know from literally hundreds of people that following Stanley Burroughs' instructions exactly produces great results. So don't change it.
However, recently I've discovered a more fundamental reason. The Lemonade Diet is not just eliminating waste from the colon (which is why psyllium husk is used in other cleanses). The health benefits from the Lemonade Diet go way beyond this. The power of the Lemonade Diet comes from the fact that the Lemonade Diet is a juice fast and fasting has been used for thousands of years to regain health and increase mental clarity and spirituality.
To understand why fasting is so powerful at restoring health, we have to go back 140 years to the time of Louis Pasteur, the French scientist who discovered germs and invented the process, Pasteurization, to kill them. Pasteur's germ theory said that disease is caused by specific external hostile, living things (germs, bacteria, viruses, etc.).
However, at the same time there was another French scientist, Antoine Bechamp, unknown to most everyone now, but at that time a very famous Professor of Pharmacy in Strasbourg, France. Bechamp proved that it was the living environment in the body that provided the opportunity for disease. Specifically, he showed that the germs that fermented wine could change from one form to another depending on the chemical content of the wine.
What does this have to do with fasting and the Lemonade Diet? Well, the vaccination/germs/disease theory of medicine says that there are specific things that cause specific diseases. Find the exact virus that causes colon cancer and you can make a vaccine that will protect people from that disease. (Not to mention the fact that whoever finds that exact
single source will become rich by owning the patent.)
The concept of health for the two thousand years before that said that the body (living environment) causes disease when it is overwhelmed by overfeeding and poisoned by toxins.
What we call disease is merely the body's way of dealing with those toxins. Thus anything that allows the elimination organs (liver, intestines, kidneys, gall bladder, skin, and lungs) a chance to concentrate on eliminating old toxins (without adding any new ones) will speed its healing. Thus, adding anything to the Lemonade Diet, especially solid food, will reduce the fasting aspect and lessen the results.

Is it a detox symptom or am I sick?
Most of the people who do the Master Cleanse have no or very little trouble and get great benefits from it. However, there is a small percentage that is worried about detox symptoms. So, here's some information to reduce your worries.
Many, many people feel lightheaded during the Master Cleanse. This is remarked on in Cleanse and Purify Thyself by Dr. Richard Anderson and Dr. Joel Fuhrman in Fasting - and Eating - for Health. Dr. Fuhrman also mentions that about 5% of people who fast experience nausea and/or vomiting. This, he says, is usually from not drinking enough liquid each day.
Detox symptoms, or healing crises as they are also called, usually go away within 3 days and are "ghosts" of previous illnesses or injuries from the past. On the Master Cleanse, these usually lessen with the next morning's eliminations.
There are five classes of detox symptoms: tiredness, irritability (or wanting to quit), boredom, aches & pains, and hot or burning bowel movements. I go into these in somewhat more depth in my book.
Women commonly begin their periods early when on the Master Cleanse as a woman's period is a form of elimination. By the way, if you have been trying to get pregnant, fasting in general, and the Master Cleanse, has been noted as improving fertility!

Can You Rid Your Body Of Yeast/Candida With The Lemonade Diet?
If you are suffering from Candida, traditional medicine advises against the inclusion of sugars in the diet. Surprisingly, however, reports of people having problems with Candida/yeast are rare, despite maple syrup being one of the main ingredients of the cleanse.
Many people have trouble getting rid of their Candida problem by simply following the rule of avoiding sugars. According to the author of "The Yeast Connection", William G. Crook, M.D., the problem of yeast overgrowth develops when antibiotics are taken, since they reduce the number of good bacteria, along with the bad bacteria, producing a breeding ground for the yeast to multiply. Diets heavy in carbohydrates and yeasts, birth control pills, cortisone and other drugs also stimulate yeast growth. He also points out that yeasts produce toxins that weaken the immune system, which is also negatively affected by sugar consumption, nutritional deficiencies and exposure to environmental molds and chemicals.
According to Crook, M.D., yeast symptoms can include fatigue, constipation, irritability, abdominal bloating, diarrhea, mood swings, anxiety, depression, dizziness, unexpected weight gain, difficulty in concentrating, psoriasis, muscle and joint pain, cravings for sugar or alcoholic beverages, menstrual problems, hives, respiratory and ear problems, impotence, infertility, bladder infections, prostatitis, and "feeling bad all over".
Victoria Boutenko, a raw food author and lecturer, suggests that going on a fat and oil free diet for a week can help alleviate Candida. Since the Lemonade Diet is free of oils and fat, it aligns with what Boutenko recommends. Also, since the Lemonade Diet is all about cleansing the entire body internally, helping to flush out toxins and other bad contaminants and poisons including yeast, it makes sense that it would help rid the body of Candida as well.

Another Compelling Argument for the Lemonade Diet
Dr. Fuhrman, in his book "Eat To Live", describes the connection between the typical American diet, disease and early death. He charted the relationship between the percentage of unrefined plant food and the percentage of deaths from heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes. A straight line shows the correlation between how the more raw vegetarian food a population consumes, the lower the death rate from those killer diseases. This is backed up with 27 pages of footnotes and studies.
A firm believer in fasting to restore health, Dr. Fuhrman promotes the idea that health can be restored by allowing the body to detoxify from the toxins of our artificially colored, flavored, preserved and processed foods. Even though he does not refer to the Lemonade Diet, he firmly establishes the science of detoxification through fasting. He links both Aspartame and MSG with severe headaches and other toxic effects.
In "Eat To Live," Dr. Fuhrman supports the revised dietary guidelines published in the July 27, 1999 issue of the Journal of the American Hearth Association. These guidelines promote more intake of greater "unrefined" plant food and less food from animal sources. They are supported by eight mainstream authorities including the Nutrition Committee of the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Division of Nutritional Research of the National Institutes of Health.
