Green Ring Binoculars from Leupold, Designed for the Outdoors

Leupold is an American company, that is probably best known for producing some of the best rifle and spotting scopes you can buy, but they also produce some excellent quality Binoculars. Often mistakenly spelt Leopold, they are a family owned business that have been producing quality optical instruments for over 100 years.

About Wind River Binoculars
There are many different ranges, styles and sizes of binoculars within the Green Ring, or as they are also known, the Leupold Wind River series, but what they have in common is all have been optimized for nature observation and the outdoors.

The most popular ranges within the Wind River Series include the Cascade, Cascades, Olympic, Mesa, Yosemite, Katmai, Mojave, Acadia and Pinnacles binoculars. All of which have a number of different binoculars within the range with different configurations! On this page I will go through some of the most popular take a look at their good and bad points and what they are best used for.

Why Green Ring?
The name "green ring binoculars" came about because of the green ring on the body of the binoculars.

Leupold Katmai Binoculars

Compact Wind River Katmai Binoculars from Leupold

Overall, these are probably my favorite Green Ring binoculars, as they give you almost the same high performance as that of full size binoculars, but are only about 4.5 inches wide and 4.25 inches long, making them compact enough for you to take anywhere.

Unlike any other compact binoculars, which use small objective lenses and eyepieces, the Wind River Katmai have full-size eyepieces and 32mm diameter objective lenses. (Full size binoculars usually have 42mm or larger objective lenses)

Along with quality phase and L-coated prisms, they produce an image with exceptional brightness, clarity and vivid, true colors.

I found the Katmai binoculars really comfortable to hold and whist not small enough to fit in your shirt pocket, they will fit into a cargo pocket when fully folded down. Due to their compact size, these binoculars make ideal travel companions and as such will make excellent safari binoculars, but are also great as general use, stadium, sporting events and birding binoculars.

Sizes Available:
  • 10x32 mm
  • 8x32 mm
  • 6x32 mm

Price
Depending on which model you choose, they have a list price of about $460 and $560, but I have seen them for sale on Amazon for between $320 - $370. Making them far cheaper option than the excellent Swarovski EL 32 binoculars, which are probably the best binoculars of this size in the world, and superior to the Katmai's, but overall I would say these have all the important features, quality lenses and prisms and therefore make excellent value for money.
