Lifesaver Water Purifier

Ranked #18,566 in Healthy Living, #278,259 overall

Perhaps one of the greatest inventions of the decade

In case you haven't heard of it I'd like to introduce to you one of the most amazing inventions I've heard of since I can remember - and it didn't even make Time Magazine's Top 50 Inventions list for 2007.

What's So Amazing About a Water Bottle?

For starters, it only resembles a water bottle in that it holds water. What it does beyond that you have to see to believe. Okay - you'll see it in a minute, but first let me spill it - it makes dirty lake, river, pond, yes, even really gross polluted, disease-laden water drinkable. In less than 20 seconds. Without chemicals. For real.

It can protect against virtually all bacteria, viruses, cysts, parasites, and fungi. OK - here's the video...

The 4000 has a lifetime usage of 4000 liters, the 6000's lifetime is 6000 liters. Both bottles hold approximately 750ml (about 3 cups) of water.

The bottle's features

The secret to the bottle's capabilities is that it's filters are revolutionary. Before the Lifesaver purifier, filters were made of ceramic and could not filter the small particles that the Lifesaver can. The Lifesaver can filter the smallest bacteria (as small as 200 nanometers) and viruses (the smallest are 25 nanometers).

The filter can handle any contaminant as small as 15 nanometers - smaller than anything it needs to handle. To understand the sizes we're talking about, 15 nanometers is about 1/100th of the width of a spider's thread.

"So," you ask, "What happens when the filter is full and has all that gunk in it?" I asked that too. The unit quits dispensing water, so it's "impossible" for it to dispense contaminated water. You simply change the cartridge and keep on going. It is estimated that the canister could provide for a family of four for six months!

It also has the ability to flow water up - like at a drinking fountain - because the canister is pressurized. It has a pressurizing pump that you pump just like a water gun; a few pumps and it's ready to dispense. This comes in handy if you don't want to put the contaminated canister to your mouth.

This amazing device requires no electricity, is completely portable, and uses no chemicals to provide a staple for sustaining life. Did I mention that according to the Time Magazine analysis the "invention of the year" for 2007 was the iPhone and the Lifesaver wasn't even a blip on the radar?

Imagine the Uses

It should be obvious - water is essential for life. But the more we examine the practicalities of this invention I'm betting you can justify owning one.

Consider the humanitarian aspect during natural disasters that hit several times each year. Flooding caused by storms, dams & levees breaking, prolonged rain, tsunamis, snow melting, and earthquakes. People without water for days to months while disease and infection plagued water refuses to recede. Parts of the third world that know no other living conditions - bathing, cooking, and drinking from the same dirty water.

Relief agencies trying to transport in clean water from long distances only to have it hijacked by uncaring militias. Wars are fought over access to clean water.

Military uses have planners jumping out of their seats. Time may have overlooked this product but it was voted 'Best Technological Development for Future Soldier System Enhancement' at Soldier Technology 2007. No longer will soldiers need to carry heavy water in addition to inhumanely heavy backpacks only to ration to the last drop, and despair when its gone.

Clean water will also provide the means for cleaning wounds quickly when away from other facilities.

Even in the best of conditions here in the developed countries there are situations that force boiling orders for water. Power lines go down or water systems become contaminated. You remembered to stock up on batteries but the water is gone - then what?

This system is almost too good to be true. Our minds simply cannot wrap around the idea that we could dip our water bottle into polluted water and drink it - without stench or fear of getting sick or dying. Yet we can completely accept that we can launch a rocket carrying humans to orbit the earth and return them to a perfect landing at a predefined airstrip.

Right now I'm only having difficulty wrapping my brain around how this invention could have not taken on like a wildfire.

Independent Test Report
Independent lab testing was performed by London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (University of London). In the report's summary it states - "The Lifesaver bottles were tested using micro organisms in far greater numbers than could ever be found in natural water sources. This worse-case scenario approach recommended by the EPA and their guidelines have been used to draw up our own protocols for testing of all Microbiological water purifiers. As well as using modified tap water for our tests we use samples taken from a pond or stream as our challenge test water to simulate "real-life" situations per EPA Guidelines." The test results support the products claims.

Meet the inventor - Michael Prichard

LIFESAVER bottle was invented and developed in the UK by Michael W. Pritchard M.W.M.Soc, the CEO of LIFESAVER systems. He developed LIFESAVER bottle after seeing the tragic waste of life and serious problems caused by the lack of safe drinking water in the wake of the Tsunami in December 2004 and the following year when Hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana. It took a little while and some very frustrating prototypes but eventually he did it.

Michael Pritchard was born in Epsom, Surrey UK in 1967. He was educated at Gordonstoun School in Scotland and went to the University of Redlands in California USA. At the age of 18 he competed at international level for England winning a gold medal as part of the 4x100 metre relay team.

Michael started his business career selling Apple computers into the then fledgling desktop publishing market. He remained within the computer industry for approximately 10 years. He worked in the city as Business Development Director for the Wace Group PLC and then in 1998 co-founded ZagMe.com a mobile marketing company.

In 2000 Michael started his own business. As well as owning a successful property business Michael is also Managing Director of Hydronic Solutions (Europe) Ltd a specialist water treatment and legionella risk assessment company.

I'm curious to hear what you think - should this have made the list of best inventions?

Looks like one very good water purify.

I just did a price check on Amazon and the prices have dropped considerably - they now sell for $149 & $179. These are approaching prices where emergency response teams can justify keeping some on hand.

coool it may replace refrigerator water filters in future..

check out amazon.com, it is under 200 bucks!
  • CoachBrown Dec 7, 2008 @ 8:40 pm | delete
The smaller one is currently $229 and the larger $299 on Amazon, but I agree that's too pricey to implement on a large scale. However who knows what might be possible as the company recoups it's initial investment? Once theory becomes reality it's possible to attract investment capital and prices may drop substantially. Like many inventions that are picked up first by the military as this one has it may be sooner rather than later. I'm excited! Thanks for leaving your feedback Jon!
