Dawn Simulators

Dawn Simulators are like alarm clocks that help you arise in a more natural and gentle way. At a preset time they will gradually increase in brightness until reaching optimum brightness.

This increasing light acts as natural cue for you to wake. Bright light helps to reduce the production of sleep hormones, such as melatonin, whilst increasing the levels of cortisol and other hormones that help you waken and shake off the sleepiness.

It has been shown that waking with light every day helps to keep the sleep/awake cycle in balance and has been shown to boost mood, productivity and energy levels for the rest of the day.

Especially useful for those who arrive at work whilst it is still dark, work under artificial light all day and return home in darkness.

Lumie manufacture a range of dawn simulators, available from under £60

Light Boxes

Light Boxes are the most commonly available and well know light therapy devices, as well as being cited as the most effective form of light therapy.
The range available from Lumie will suit almost all those combating Seasonal Affected Disorder (S.A.D.). They simply require being placed near you whilst you are stationary. Either whilst eating breakfast, at your desk, or whilst reading as some examples of incorporating their use in your daily schedule.

As well as making models with either Broad or daylight spectrum bulbs, they make high intensity lights for those who can only spend 30minutes in front of them, and mid-intensity lights for those who have a schedule where they can be used for longer periods.

Lumie provide a simple and easy to use calculator to allow you to select from light therapy devices that will best suit your lifestyle.

Light Visors

Light Visors are ideal for those who travel due to their portability and the ability to be able to be used whilst on the move, meaning you aren't tied to a desk or a power outlet.

Lumie make a range of Light Visors, many users of these devices use them to counter the effect of Jet Lag as well as Seasonal Affected Disorder.
The basic visor provides an hours high intensity light from one charge, which directly stimulates the retina and is enough to offset most cases of SAD. The mid range model includes a timer and dimmer function with extended battery life.
The Jet lag model covers all of the above and comes with a pair of extra-dark glasses and a jet lag calculator to allow you to work out the required light/dark cycles to quickly recover from jet lag.

Broad Spectrum Vs Daylight Simulating Bulbs

Broad spectrum lights emit a wider range of wavelengths and emit a warm white light. For the technically minded they emit a colour temperature of around 3500K.

Daylight spectrum bulbs simulate a more natural sunlight combination of wavelengths. They emit cool, blue-white light. The colour temperature of these is around 5400K.

Both types are equally effective for all conditions, so it does depend which kind of light you prefer. Broad spectrum bulbs are more common due to their brightness and most people like the warmer tone of the light. Daylight spectrum bulbs may not appear to be as bright, though they are just as effective due to the higher amount of blue wavelength light which is thought to be especially effective.

Lumie offer a choice of Daylight or Broad Spectrum bulbs in the majority of their products.
