The Linesville Spillway - My Favorite Road Trip

A place we traveled about an hour and fifteen minutes to every summer. A place in which I never fully appreciated until I had children of my own. Kids and adults alike love it. One of those "you'd have to see it to believe it" kind of places. Thousands of carp gather at the spillway and go into a feeding frenzy when tourists toss bits of bread at them. The churning mass of ugly fish is strangely compelling - especially when ducks literally walk across the backs of the fish to fight for the little bits of bread. It is a wonder to behold!

In warm weather, the spillway on the sanctuary (eastern) side is home to thousands of oversized carp, attracted by the bread thrown into the water by visitors; this is known as "The Place Where the Ducks Walk on the Fish", coined by local businessman Alpine Maclaine. The Spillway is locally billed as "Pennsylvania's second most popular tourist attraction, after the Liberty Bell" and the logo of the Linesville Volunteer Fire Department is, in fact, a duck standing on the back of a fish. The Spillway is actually the outflow of a secondary impoundment of the reservoir, making an excellent place to observe wildlife.
