Link Building Got You Down? Here Are 8 Link Building Lists To Make Your Life Easier

All your needed ingredients in one pot.

I recommend you visit and bookmark each of these websites below. Whether you're searching for a topically relevant blog to comment on, industry specific social networks, or directories with high PR, you'll find each list comes in quite handy during those tedious quests for back links.

But before you start clicking out, remember to observe these points:

Following the recent outcropping of sites using the "dofollow" attribute (a tag that tells search engines to follow the link, which is then counted towards your site's back link popularity) Google has made some unfavorable algorithmic changes to discourage webmasters from using this tag. So while I encourage you to target backlinks from "dofollow" sites for now, use "nofollow" on your own sites for now.

Also, don't get too crazy with directories. They're enticing, but weak in terms of how important they are to the search engines. Make sure any directory you post to is relevant, highly trafficked and reputable with a high pagerank.

Here they are, below:

Link Building Tips #1 : Create Viral, Linkable Lists

Search algorithms are scoring links in a much more advanced way, placing more value on trusted links. This trust is then cross referenced by user data and domain age, meaning you can't fool Google into thinking your blog comments, paid links and direcotry submission should count as high quality, relevant links. These are base level practices; used alone they will do more hurt your website marketing than benefit it.

That said, Link building tip #1 is to create lists that others will want to link to naturally. Submit these lists to social bookmarking sites, digg, and other content networks. Here are some examples:
___________________________________________________

1. A top 100 list relating to your genre.
2. Top 10 myths about your industry
3. Top experts in your industry (flattery will get you everywhere)
4. Industry related: Do You Recognize the [number] Early Warning Signs of [blank]?
5. See How Easily You Can [desirable result] by following these [number] easy steps.

Make sure your doc is free of spelling errors and is'nt written in a self promotional manner. You can submit your lists not only to social / news sites but for inclusion on others' highly trafficked blogs, article directories, and more.

Link Building Tips #2 : News, PressReleases and Content Syndication

Nothing beats being personable when it comes to getting backlinks. Aside from just requesting links by email (which is tedious and difficult to do convincingly) there are other more creative approaches to acquiring incoming links.

Here are a few:
______________________________________________________

1. You can syndicate articles at EzineArticles, GoArticles, etc. to gain visibility in the SERPS and funneling the referral traffic to your website. Go the extra mile by linking to OTHER syndicated articles written by you in the resource box (instead of your website) every so often. (While you're writing good content, you might as well check out how to get paid for it.

2. Submit articles to industry news sites. Have a site about BLANK? Submit to BLANKinformationalsite.com.

3. Syndicate a press release using a real PR service such as PR web. (Free submission sites can devalue your trust level.)Email it to journalists and bloggers and track who picks it up. Offer them ongoing news or exclusive content.

4. Email a few friends when you have important relevant news and ask them to reference it with a link on their site or blog.

5. Write about, and link to, companies with "in the news" pages to encourage them to reference your content with a link.

Bonus - Perform surveys and studies. If they are of good quality and value, you can publish and sell it in ebook form on sites like ebay, with a link back to your site. Controversial studies within a genre can create mass interest, too.

Link Building Tips #3 : Making an RSS feed to get deep links

RSS stands most commonly for "Really Simple Syndication", and is a file format that is incorporated by users in their websites to allow for 'web syndication', making their web content available in a format that can be universally understood by other people.

In essence, RSS is a 'mini database' that contains headlines and descriptions of your web content, including hyperlinks that enable users to link back to the full article of their choice. Here's the deep link. Deep= pages deep within your website, no just top level or index page.

RSS websites - that is, websites that contain RSS 'feeds' (articles or postings) - typically have colorful graphics to indicate to users that the specific web content is available through RSS feeds. These graphics are usually depicted by orange rectangles that are usually marked with 'RSS' or 'XML'.

With its increased popularity, RSS is now being adopted and used by more website owners or publishers. Today, numerous resources are now available that aid Internet surfers (and even beginners as well) on how to set up and use RSS.

Here is in example RSS feed:

  • The channel is the feed.

  • The items are the individual peices of content /pages you want to syndicate.

  • Don't put spaces in between your tags as below.

  • Now open up note pad, or another simple text editor...copy and paste this document, filling in your own info. Remember to remove excess sapaces in this template.

    < ?xml version="1.0" ? >
    < rss version ="2.0">
    < channel >

    < title >The Channel Title Goes Here< / title >
< description > The explanation of how the items are related goes here< / description >
    http://www.directoryoflinksgohere< / link>

    < item >
    < title >The Title Goes Here < /title>
    < description >The description goes here< /description >
    < link >http://www.linkgoeshere.com
    < / item>

    < item >
    < title >The Title Goes Here < /title>
    < description >The description goes here< /description >
    < link >http://www.linkgoeshere.com
    < / item>

    < / channel >
    < /r ss >

When you save the file be sure to save it as an xml file.

Next, you'll want to validate your feed to make sure it's readable, and to submit it to feed reader websites so that the content syndication can begin.

Link Building Tips #4 : Write Guest Articles

This link building tip comes to you courtesy of one of my favorites, Net Business Blog. I've stopped reading since it was bought out since the content has really taken a nose dive, but the former owners articles are great.

Here Dee writes about the benefits of writing guest articles and its impact on SEO, networking, traffic and branding.

Dee points out that writing articles for publication on other blogs can positivly affect search engine rankings, since you have the capability to choose anchor text and provide deep links to specific website pages.

One of my favorite exerpts from this article was the piece about networking. I have found this one to be particularly true. Webmasters love free content, and writing an email asking for publication of a relevant, well written article is a great way to expand your business network.

Point three addresses website traffic. Any content developer hoping to get an article published should obviously target highly trafficked blogs. (Especially if you dont have a blog, or if you have a new blog lacking in readership.)

Finally, increased exposure of your content is where branding comes into play. Writing guest articles works to maximize your reach; the more people who see your content, the more strength is given to your brand.

Tagging Tricks for Your Lens

Now that you've gobbled up a good portion of link building tips, here's a tip thats "off the menu." Yes, link building is THE way to improve search engine rankings for your lens or website; but specifically relating to your lens, strategically working with tags is equally important.

That's why I'm highlighting the Tagging Tricks lens by MrLewisSmile. Here are just a few to get you started...

1. Proper KeyWord Research with KeyWord Discovery
Google Suggest offers limited suggestions, with no real search data. Try using the free tool offered by Trellian/KeywordDiscoveryType in one of your tags, ie: "laptop bags" and receive up to 10 suggestions of exact search phrases along with how many times the phrase is searched (approx) per/month. See how many results show up on Google for the search. Less than 2 million is a good phrase to target.

*incorporate these phrases in your copy*

2. Pay Attention to Your Traffic Stats
You can view what phrases are bringing traffic to your lenses from Google; a good way to evaluate what types of phrases are converting and how qualified your traffic is. Ie; Are they looking for information? To buy something? etc. Try creating various tag combinations out of the phrases bringing traffic to your lens.

For Better Rankings, Internally Link Dynamically Driven Sites

We haven't talked much about internal linking as yet, but creating a strategic internal linking hierarchy is an important part of a link building or SEO campaign. Before we dig into the nuts and bolts of basic SEO internal linking strategies, I want to specifically address ecommerce, or other dynamically driven websites.

Dynamic sites are those that use a data base to load pages or content within a page. Common languages are .php and.asp.

Ecommerce sites do usually end up with some internal links by default, just by nature of common ecommerce template functions. (Cross selling, related products, links to product pages from category pages, etc.) Many ecommerce sites also employ some amount of other internal linking strategies as well.

But there's a problem with this.

Internal links will not improve rankings or search engine spider-ability of a dynamic site that isn't totally search engine friendly to the max. And most aren't.

Make sure the search engine spiders can see and index ALL of your content is the most important thing you can do. And unless you've paid for an SEO redesign, your ecommerce site most probably has some problems in this area, namely:

- URLS with long query strings or question marks.
- Un-optimized (bloated) code
- Use of unreadable programming languages
- No static pages

The good news is that there is a quick fix for this that most folks don't have the awareness or time to implement. (And that incidentally will benefit already search engine friendly sites, too.)

Make static page replicas of your dynamic pages and strategically inter link them using anchor text. This allows your content to be indexed if your site isn't search engine friendly without spending money on a complete site overhaul. Even sites that are search engine friendly can capture more organic search traffic and get more benefit from their internal linking strategies by using static page replicas.

Google actually suggests doing this in their webmaster guidelines.

So How Do You Do It?
Good question. For sites with hundreds or thousands of dynamic pages, you obviously can't manually create static versions of all of them.

I actually found a really useful linking / SEO software tool called
LInk Building and SEO Software Static Page Builder
that automates the process for you. It also internally links your pages using keywords in the anchor text and a bunch of other SEO stuff.

The reason why I like Static Page Builder (aside from the fact that it provides a solution for this very common SEO pitfall) is because of its very intuitive, user friendly interface. Most website marketers aren't genius programmers - gotta love the companies that recognize this.

The monthly fee is pretty reasonable, especially if you opt out after you're done doing what you need to do.

Sneaky sneaky...there's also a free trial.

LInk Building Tip #5 : When Building Links, BE RELEVANT

Ask yourself, "whats tastey right now?"

For all those digital cable folks out there: If you've ever stayed up to watch late night news shows and used the "get info" button on your remote, you know that programs like Letterman and 20/20 describe themselves at a "relevant" looks at news and...." etc.

What makes them relevant? In short, they follow what's happening culturally; they follow what their viewers are interested in. (Would so many people watch if they didn't?)

Try and follow this principle when brainstorming link bait ideas. Use a meme tracker, see what people are blogging about in your industry. Then follow suit by creating useful or captivating articles.

Here are a few more ideas:

1. If I had a link building lens, and the latest news was a big Google PageRank Yank (to "penalize" webmasters who buy paid links), I might create a resource list on this topic. I'd link to any official Google statements, link to particularly insightful blog posts, maybe to a list of free directories, and of course my own site. If it's good enough, other people will link to your resource list.

2. /www.addthis.com/bookmark.php">Bookmarking sites like del.icio.us are underused quite a bit. With due diligence, they can really bring a ton of traffic over time. By regularly bookmarking relevant sites similar to your in topic, other's will soon discover your site as well.

3. Any content you create by following what's relevant should be promoted quickly. After all, Britney Spears isn't going to be a basket case forever. (And if she is, people wont care forever.) Try emailing your friends, colleagues, family and asking them to bookmark your content, submit it to digg or stumble upon.

SPEAKING OF RELEVANT...
Check out *this* little gem, Prayers For Britney: a social movement. I recalled using this B Spears example and thought that right here would be a useful place to spread the word. I encourage you to do the same!

Who Else Wants MASSIVE traffic and Links From Stumble Upon?

(Link Building and Traffic Building Tip #7 - Start Stumbling!)

I'll be frank. I'm embarrassed it took me so long to start capitalizing on this social media goldmine. After all, I consider myself to be innovative. But for some reason, concerning StumbleUpon, I've just been lazy. Until I experienced a huge traffic surge.

  • Here's how you can do the same. (It's not hard. Don't be scared, dont be lazy. We're talking free traffic and free links!)

    First, What Is StumbleUpon?

I'm guessing the majority of you already know vaguely what it is, but haven't cared to pursue it because you have to *gasp* download something. (Too much work?) A small percent I'd guess are expert stumblers, and the remaining have no idea what we're talking about.

For all of you, here's the full dish:

It's basically a version of Digg, but for rating and sharing websites instead of blogs, news or articles. The social aspect is set up similarly, but with more tagging capabilities and other cool, easy to use features. It's essentially a way for users to discover and share new websites, and for you to gain massive traffic.

      In short:

    • 1. Users Signup (easy) and download the toolbar.

    • 2. Users choose what websites they want to be "shown" when they randomly click the stumble icon. Just some of the categories to choose from include activism, marketing, arts, technology, etc.

    • 3. Users start stumbling by clicking the icon on their toolbar... and are taken to a website within one of their preferred categories.

    • 4. Users can then easily click one of the many other toolbar icons to "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" the site, email it to a friend, write a review or whatever.

Once you create your profile, all stumble users can see which sites you've reviewed, which you've rated, etc. If you know Digg, it's really quite similar.

The last function worth mentioning is that once you have the toolbar installed, you can easily stumble any website you come across. Not just while your "stumbling" but when your doing your everyday thing. The toolbar makes it easier, NOT more intimidating. It SAVES time, t does not require MORE time.

Ok. Moving on to the real Juice.

Watch Your Traffic and Links Do A Happy-Jigg!

    • 1. Follow the above steps.

    • 2. Stumble your own website - tag it according to your most important keywords.

    • 3. Search for other stumblers who like sites within your category, and use the toolbar to share your website with them. (Its a Networking tool...don't be shy!) The more thumbs up a site gets, the more visibility/traffic it will receive.

    • 4. Start stumbling random sites you come across to build up your profile. Again, this only takes the click of a button.

    • 5. Here's a big one: Keep a record of any websites that link to you, and stumble those websites. The website get traffic from Stumble Upon, and some of that traffic is sent on to you via the link on the page. Marvelous!

Finally, StumbleUpon has search engine results pages. You can search within stumbleupon.com for certain tags, and these SERPS show up n Google.
    Tons of optimization possibilities here.

Note to self: Write link bait for squidoo

Several high ranking squidoo lenses tout tools and useful info for lens masters. Is anyone making a lens that monitors newly available modules and widgets? Will it have suggestions on optional uses, how to create captivating content with them?

    I don't know, but it's a good idea :)

A Quick Note About Link Juice

Here's an easy explanation of how to observe this concept with your internal linking strategy.

Internal linking is one link building practice that can't be overlooked.

Getting the basics out of the way...

    - Adopt the use of a text link footer, but don't over optimize or over keyword saturate the anchor text. It's for the user.

    - Link your internal content pages together where it makes sense to do so. Anchor text is meant help the user understand what the linked page is about. Use keyword phrases appropriately; the benefits are a by product.

    - Internal links from the home page are very important, especially when you have a lot of external links pointing there.

And this brings us to Link Juice.

Every time you get a link to your website, whether its to the home page or a sublevel page, it contributes to your link juice. (Or Page rank, or the green stuff that fills up the page rank bar.) The better the link, the more juice you get.

Once you have a lot of juice on your index page you can begin to duel it out to your other pages, thereby increasing their SERP rankings.

View this concept metaphorically, and it will make sense. "My home page has a whole glass of link juice, and my x page has none. I'll share a bit of the juice from my home page by linking to page x from there."

Bear this method in mind while you continue to acquire incoming links to your home page and sub level pages. (Called "deep links.") You'll see that green juice fill up gradually while you monitor and improve your link juice distribution.

Quick Link Building Tip : Easy and Genius

Try this. Use this custom search engine to search for "your lens topic + plexo." You'll be returned a list of every lens on squidoo related to your topic that has a plexo for you to add and build links to your site quickly.

Link Building Tip - Stay Relevant By Tracking Topics

One method I've begun to use with great success is following trends relevant to my sites. This allows me to not only strategically create relevant content, but to get more visibility and site referrals via blog and article commenting.

For example, you could set up an alert to notify you when new posts are made on a particular subject, allowing you to get the first comment, the most visibility and referrals. Some news sites like cnn only allow comments for the first 72 hours. Another benefit.

The three methods I'm using now are:

    Google Alerts -
Track new appearances of my incoming links, and relevant phrases pertianing to mylink building campaign.

    Meme Trackers -
keep an eye on hot topics in circulation

    Following Journalists -
It's funny. Journalists are spending a lot of time doing the exact inverse of SE marketers. They are following us, the public, and figuring out how to get in on social media, "the new journalism."
    Google Alerts
Set up and receive alerts in your inbox
    Poynter
    A resource site for journalists
    Topix
News from thousands of sources, sorted geographically for US cities, as well as a wide variety of subjects.

Thinking About Social Media? Here Are 5 Ways to Protect Your Brand

We interupt this special program... (Can't talk links with out talking social!)

I was recently asked the question "How do you manage online reputation and maintain brand identity with the rise of social media and user generated content?"

Here's an elaboration of my answer.

The advent of SM really does present more opportunity than it does risk. Social Media (SM) is quickly becoming the method of choice to enhance brand image, influence traditional media coverage, gain online visibility and build relationships with a targeted audience. That said, here are five ways to protect your brand and to mitigate the risks associated with the recent advent of user-generated content.

Social Media & Brand Management Rule #1 - First and foremost, participate.

Choose a select few, targeted SM channels to avoid the poor image resulting from weak profiles and to guard against "social media burnout."

These targeted channels will be topically related to your industry, genre and audience, as well as those that afford an opportunity to distribute quality content that establishes your brand as a thought leader or authoritative source.

Social Media & Brand Management Rule #2 - Leverage Social Media to increase your SERP (search engine results pages) visibility.

If you receive negative "social media press" it can be quickly counter acted by stuffing those negative search results down in the results pages by quickly gaining new positive visibility. Knowing what content will appear in the SERP titles on various SM sites allows you to swiftly determine how you'll counter act negative brand impacts.

I.e. - If someone posts a thread in a forum, "Company X sucks", (forum thread titles appear as the listing title in the SERPS) this press will probably appear on the first page for Company X's name. For quick brand management and damage control Company X can then distribute content that gets picked up in the search engines quickly - like YouTube, forums, blogs, squidoo, etc., making sure to include the business name in pieces of content that get used as SERP titles.

Social Media & Brand Management Rule #3 - Always use the soft sell approach.

Whatever SM channel you choose, one thing remains constant. Social Media users despise hard sells and anything that even remotely smells like one. THis concept is so important that you may want to consider a consultant to distribute content specifically designed for social media.

Social Media & Brand Management Rule #4 - Exercise consistency with tone and manner of your content and writing style.

As we all know, consistency contributes to trust and over all brand strength. Align your SM participation with your brand standards.

Social Media & Brand Management Rule #5 - Use Google Alerts!

Google offers a function that allows you to choose a word or phrase to track and monitor. Any new appearances of these phrases online (i.e. your company name) will be sent to your inbox. The first step in online brand management as it relates to SM is to evaluate the landscape and understand your current brand position.

As Steve Pavlina says, "ready aim fire" is always better than a "ready, fire fire fire." So true in Social Media! Click here to view the initial question.

    Unique Contests Drive Blog Traffic

Speaking of contests. GREAT way to drive traffic. Of course you'll have to think about what kind of traffic you want to target. After all traffic doesn't necessarily equal good traffic.

Other than developing a contest that's strategically purposed to attract the kind of traffic you want, second on the list is thinking about that 'key differentiator.' Unique contests drive blog traffic.

PixelHead exemplifies this with his new logo contest.

What makes this contest great is that it's unique. The contest is only open to layman designers, or otherwise photographers, online marketers or anyone who tinkers around with a design application.

Check it out for some great tips. Observe his entry rules and how smart they are. Post your entry on your blog? Think about that for a second. Think links.

I just had to enter this one; my entry is at the top. See GrubHound.com
