About Lion Adventure

Written in 1967, Lion Adventure is the nineth book in the Adventure series by Willard Price. Designed for a younger audience, Price - a naturalist who worked for National Geographic - hoped to promote a love and appreciation for the natural world in his readers.

It covers the further adventures of Hal and Roger Hunt, a pair of young zoologists who capture animals alive for parks and conservation. On this occassion however, they have quite a different challenge. A black-maned lion has been killing local people, and Hal and Roger are asked to kill it. Wll they compromise their "take it alive" stance, or will they find another way to resolve the situation?

In Lion Adventure the Hunts are given an unusual mission - to track down and kill a man-eating lion that has been stalking and killing the locals. With a distinctive black mane, the lion proves exceptionally wily.

Along the way they need to deal with opposition from local authorities, an enemy who is trying to kill them and a night stranded out on the veidt with no food water or supplies.
For the first time the Hunt's mission is to kill an animal. Will they find a way to take it alive anyway?

Hunting man eaters in real life

The memoirs of Jim Corbett

The Jim Corbett Omnibus:
Man-eaters of Kumaon;
The Man-eating Leopard of Rudraprayag;
The Temple Tiger and
More Man-eaters of Kumaon

If you suspect that the Hunts managed to find Black Mane rather too easily, you would be right.

In real life hunting man eaters could take months of patient tracking, staking out kills, and following up rumours efore the animal was found. Then once it was found it was a case of managing to get a successful shot, which could take many attempts.

For some first hand information about hunting maneating big cats, the memoirs of Jim Corbett, hunter and conservationist, are excellent reading. Although he regarded shooting them as regretable, in several cases the animals he was hunting had killed over a hundred humans, sometimes several hundred.

The Omnibus edition gives you an idea of how many people were killed by maneaters in India and why the policy of shooting them was implemented. It is also a fascinating look at tracking, hunting, and the Indian wilderness and wildlife.
