Welcome to the Little Green Rock

We're putting together this lens to showcase the best of bamboo clothing, bamboo skateboards and some of the finest alternative material surfboards you've ever seen.  We've put countless hours and lord only knows how many paychecks into getting our stuff this far.  Just to show that we're not greedy, we'll also put the best of the rest on here as well - we really hope you will like our products the best, but a world without choice aint much of a world at all!  Over the next couple of months, we aim to make this a site that you will want to come back to again and again as well as tell your friends about.  Welcome to the Little Green Rock

Bamboo clothes

Soft as silk, tough as a badger's @rse!

Bamboo fabrics are on the front line of sustainable clothing. Bamboo is a fast growing grass that does not require fertilizers, pesticides or anything else that man deems necessarry for other crops.

Besides being good for mother earth, bamboo clothing has some great benefits for those who chose to wear it. Bamboo clothing is lightweight, cool, breathable, an excellent wicking fabric and soft as a baby's south pole.

On top of all that, the same properties that allow bamboo to flourish in almost every climate without the need for pesticides keep bamboo clothing from ever smelling damp or sweaty. I've ridden my mountain bike for hours while wearing a bamboo t-shirt, hung the sweaty thing up and after it dried I stuck it in a friend's face and he didn't smell a thing! He punched me in the nose for assaulting him with a t-shirt, but he didn't smell a thing!

I hope that you will want to read more about bamboo clothing. Please check out this page if you want to find out more about why we use bamboo for our clothes.

If you are curious about how we make clothing out of bamboo check out this page.

If you have any questions about bamboo or bamboo clothing, please drop us a line here at Squidoo or click here to scope out our contact details.

See ya in the water!!

Bamboo Clothes

Ludicrously soft, environmentally friendly and panda approved

Here's a couple of links to help you find some bamboo clothing. We're only putting a couple of links on here that we can personally verify; if you have a brand you want to shout about - go ahead! If you give us a heads up, I'll buy an item from said company and, if it's the bees knees, I'll post the link here.
Little Green Rock
This is us!! We are going out of our way to create a line of clothing that will appeal to everyone, not just surfers, skaters and earth concious beach bums. Hopefully, years from now, all clothing companies will be using sustainable materials to make their clothing. When that time comes around we still want to be a top brand because of our designs. We have already begun work on the range for 2009 and we think they're fantastic (well, we would, wouldn't we?). Keep watching this space. LGR
Spun Bamboo
Spun Bamboo - these guys are at the forefront of bamboo clothing design.

Bamboo clothes have been around for a very short time; in fact, we are all still at the bottom of the learning curve when it comes to bamboo clothing production. We all owe a great deal of thanks to Spun Bamboo for being the driving force behind making quality bamboo clothes available to the public.

If you are in the US and want to order some high quality bamboo clothing - you won't go wrong with these guys! Log onto the website and have a poke around.

Bamboo skateboards

Skating isn't just something to do when the surf's flat; for some it's the only thing to do!

Bamboo is a fantastic material for engineering skateboard decks. Maple has long been a favourite for deck builders but, like any hardwood, it takes a very long time to get usable timber from a maple. If you are reading this, you will know that bamboo is a very sustainable raw material for making almost anything.

Aside from it's eco credentials, bamboo is stunning when pressed into a skateboard deck. We are working on a 40" longboard at the moment and they are coming out absolutely beautiful. We are also doing a street deck that will take all the abuse you can throw at it and still come back for more!

A great quote from the Sector 9 boys - 'save a tree, ride a weed'.

To the right is a killer board from the guys at Lush. The link to their website is just below.

Skateboard stuff

Here's some links to help you out with all the stuff you didn't know that you need to know about skateboards!

Lush longboards
If you want to check out a company that lives and breathes skating in the UK - here you go. Far from being a company that just sells skateboards, the crew at Lush have provided a great website to buy boards, learn about skating, check out photos, enter contests and join a great online forum.
Sector 9
One of 2 premier skate companies in the States. Kick-ass website definately worth checking out. Sector 9 do a great range of boards but, as you might expect, we are particularly fond of the bamboo decks. Check these guys out and let us know what you think of them.
Gravity skateboards
Skateboards from Gravity will always have a special place in my heart. For a couple of years I lived on a tiny island in the Caribbean and my only transportation was a well-used 42 inch Gravity skateboard; don't ya just hate me?!
Silverfish
If it has to do with skateboards or skateboarding, you'll find it on Silverfish. Comprehensive forums, product reviews and all the links and ads from companies you want to kinow about. Mainly for longboarders but all skaters equally welcome.
Loaded
The boys at Loaded make some great bamboo boards.

Build yer own!

Have a go at making your own skateboard

There's nothing quite like using something that you made yourself. Have the satisfaction of riding your own custom board - check out these links to help you get started.

Don't forget to check out the board building forums on Silverfish and Lush for a wealth of knowledge (and a great deal of BS).
Roarockit
Want to build your own bamboo board but have no experience with wood working? Fear not - Roarockit can supply you with everything (except griptape) to make your own longboard or street deck, including instructions. After a recent experience with these guys, LGR gives them 2 big thumbs up!
Toothless
Here's a great how-to from a mad Belgian.

Bamboo skateboards available on Amazon

Don't have time to get to the local skate shop? Never fear, Amazon's here!

If you like the convenience and the security of shopping with Amazon, here's a few bamboo boards that I found for you. There are a few more hidden in Amazon and if you think that one of them deserves to be here more than what I have listed - let me know.
Sorry, there are no results available from Amazon.

Bamboo skateboards on eBay

Here's what I have found on ebay

Always check the description to find out if you are buying a pure bamboo deck or a bamboo composite - nothing wrong with composites as long as you know that's what you are buying!

Surfboards

There are more foam/fibreglass boards on the market than you can swing a dead cat at; if you are interested in alternatives - here ya go!

For years, we, as surfers, have claimed that we were one with the ocean and we really cared about the planet. It never occured to us that our boards were a nasty little cocktail of the most eco-unfriendly stuff around. Little Green Rock will unleash some killer alternative material surfboards later this year; until then, check out what some others are already doing. No drooling!!

Surfboards

Here's a few links to surfboards makers who aren't afraid to go against the status quo.

Grain surfboards
I don't have enough good things to say about these boys. Check out this site to view some of the most beautiful boards imaginable. These beautiful wooden boards belong hung up on your wall, but that wouldn't make them very happy; riding some choice waves would! These boards come ready to ride or, if you prefer the DIY approach, you can buy them in kit form and get the satisfaction of riding a gorgeous, eco friendly board that you made with your own little hands. Much respect.
Bamboo surfboards
Gary Young has taken surfboards to another level with these bamboo beauties. We are working on our own bamboo surfboard designs at Little Green Rock, but Gary has definitely set the standard with these bad boys. I dare you not to get one if you live in or are passing through Hawaii.
Greenlight surfboards
Much like Grain surfboards, Greenlight offers you the chance to make your own board. Using a combination of recycled stuff and bamboo fabric, these boards are pushing the limits of eco-friendly surfboards. Don't be fooled by the fact that they're in Philly, I know from experience that there's good waves to be had not too far from where they are.
Ocean Green
Here's some killer balsa wood boards made in Nicaragua. I absolutely love what these guys are doing (you'll find out why soon). One of the best surf trips I have ever had was to Nicaragua - go surf some empty waves in warm water and pick up an eco-friendly surfboard while you're there!
Cedar Surfboards
Hey Squids, just found this site today. Gorgeous surfboards made from cedar. The constructions is very similar to boat building, producing a strong, lightweight surfboard. Don't you dare hang it on the wall! Get on one of these bad boys and charge.

Sites for surfers

When your idea of surfing has more to do with a board and some wax than a computer and a mouse

Over the next couple of weeks, I'll post a few links here that I think are great. I would love to hear from you about the sites you like as well.
Magicseaweed
I couldn't get by without Magicseaweed, in fact, it's my homepage. All the surf related info you need, the best forecasts in the business and the online store is first rate. If you surf, or just want surf stuff, you can't go wrong here.
ASP world tour
If the pro tour is your thing then this is your site. All the news on the title race and current pro rankings. Past experience has shown that this site can be a bit tempermental. If this link does not work, try typing 'aspworldtour' into the address bar.
Wetsand surf shop
Fantastic website you can spend hours on. Check out the 'Green room' for all your eco-friedly surf news.
Surfers Path
This is the best surf mag out there for my money. Totally dedicated to the environment and loads of great surf and travel features.
Surfers Against Sewage (SAS)
"Not just surfers, not just sewage"; the tagline really says it all. This is a great organization and its UK chapter is currently waging war with the government of our sister island, Guernsey, over a nasty sewage issue. Log on to the site and check it out. Why not buy a bamboo t-shirt while you're there and support a great cause?

Surf vids on Amazon

Classic surf videos to help you keep your stoke on the flat days or chill out with between sessions

Here's a few DVD's worth watching. Drop us a line and let us know what other vids you think should be on here. I have a few in mind, but I've spent enough time on Amazon tonight.

Jack Johnson - September Sessions

Jack Johnson is now a superstar outside of the surfing world. This is a great movie with a laid back style full of great surfing from some of the best in the world.

Amazon Price: $13.99 (as of 11/22/2008) Buy Now

Big Wednesday

This one is now a cult classic. Big Wednesday features some Hollywood faces before they were stars. This flick is great for surfers and non-surfers alike.

Amazon Price: $9.99 (as of 11/22/2008) Buy Now

The Endless Summer [Region 2]

While the best waves are usually found in the winter, we would all love to have an endless summer. One of the original surf films, The Endless Summer is a timeless classic. We all owe Bruce a big thank you for this one.

Photos scrounged from Flickr

Pics that caught my eye while browsing through Flickr

Pictures make almost everything look better: walls, pages in a book and even a web page (sorry, lens). Here's a couple of nice ones off of Flickr. If I ever figure out how to use a computer for anything other than playing solitaire on, I'll load up a few from LGR.

Howdy Squids!

Little Green Rock is a small but ornery group of outdoor nuts and beach bums living on the little island of Jersey in the British Channel Islands.  We have just started making bamboo clothing and have 3 models of bamboo skateboards coming soon, closely followed by some gorgeous balsa surfboards.  Welcome to Little Green Rock
