Baking and Candy Making...Gifts from the Heart

Where My Love of Cooking Came From

Every week my Granny would pick from her treasure trove of recipes and have me prepare a desert for the week. If there was a church social coming up I made the desert for that too. Sometimes it would be a cake and others it would be a pie.

Through baking cookies and candy making I learned the art of Giving. I learned that cookies and candies were the ultimate gift of caring. They were something that I could give that was directly from me.

You see as a child I didn't have spending money. The tight budget that my mother ran our household on didn't leave room for money that could just be spent on a whim. Every dime had to count.

3 things you should know about Home Baking and Candy Making

Baking and Candy making is a great way to sneak in a math or reading lesson. At 5 yrs old, my daughter is already being exposed to fractions. Simply by helping me create in the kitchen she is already learning about weights and measures. This year she is in pre-school, but next year when she starts Kindergarten she will already know many more words by site than her classmates. These are skills that she has learned by "helping me read" recipes in the kitchen.

Coming together as a family to bake cookies or make candy is a great bonding experience that can lead to long lasting traditions. In our family working together in the kitchen is a holiday tradition. From stringing popcorn and cranberries to put on the tree, baking pies for Christmas Dinner, or decorating cookies to give away to friends and family, working together on our edible treasures is something that we look forward to every year as the holiday season approaches. As soon as Thanksgiving is over you can find us buzzing around the kitchen while Christmas music floats through the air. It's like they say "the kitchen is the heart of the home."

I will never forget the first time I baked a cake for a church function. I was so trilled when someone made a comment on how good it tasted. The only time I remember being more proud was later when I became a Mom and was able to witness that same sense of accoplishment in the faces of my own children. That year we had made gift baskets for my childrens teachers and delivered them to the school. The teachers enjoyed their baskets so much that they wanted to know where we had ordered them from. My children's faces BEAMED with pride as they announced "We MADE them." The sense of pride and accoplishment the kids had at that moment was simply priceless.

Who is LittleSnowflakes

I am a stay at home mother of three. My oldest child, age 19 has moved off to start her own traditions, but my younger two (18 and 5) still live at home. I have always heard that a person should find a way to take what they love and develop a business around it. Well recently I have decided to put that idea to practice. After many years of creating cakes, cookies, and candies for my friends and family, I have decided to offer them to others as well. In October of this year my husband discovered a great avenue for selling my edible treasures and encourage me to opened a shop; http://www.littlesnowflakes.etsy.com
Etsy is a collection of artisans that are dedicated to bringing back the concept of Homemade. Check it out if you get a chance, you will be surprised at what you find.
