Hold Still! Paintings are alive in Laguna Beach

"With creative roots in Europe, where centuries ago, the art form known as tableaux vivants was developed, the Pageant has been making what's really three dimensional appear as two.

"And Laguna's version has taken this concept to a zenith of technical sophistication so profound that unless one of the volunteers who strike poses on stage night after night gets a case of the nervous shakes, you can't even tell there are people up there." -- Coast Magazine

This year, the the Festival of Arts celebrates its 80th birthday! The dates were July 7 - August 31, 2012. With a theme of The Genius, it will include explorations of the fascinating and unpredictable relationship between art and technology. You'll witness a "cavalcade of masterpieces illustrating how breakthroughs in different fields have also altered the path of art history and the way we see the world."

Quote from a recent year's show: "We'll be telling stories about ancient and modern superheroes and strange, mythical creatures," Duling said. "You don't have to believe in fairies, dragons or beasts like centaurs or griffins to be drawn into the artistic fantasies that help them stay alive in our dreams.

"Only Make Believe will also showcase the creative expressions of artists who devoted themselves to conjuring everything from Victorian historical fantasies to illustrations for fairytales beginning "once upon a time." -- From 2011 program information.

Do you enjoy performance art? The Pageant of the Masters is a world-famous stage presentation featuring living pictures. Volunteer cast members are transformed into a series of famous works of art, intricately faithful art recreations classical and contemporary. They may be posed as characters in a painting, sculpture. They may become part of classic perfume bottles, even pieces of jewelry. The event is held in an outdoor amphitheater.

The Pageant presents these static displays enhanced by the use of a professional orchestra, elaborate costume and make-up, intricate, detailed sets and live narration. They have an expert staff and hundreds of dedicated volunteers

Each scene appears suddenly. The masterpiece lives before your eyes. They last for approximately ninety seconds, before fading to black. Can you spot signs of life? Let's hope there aren't any pesky moths around that night. There is skill and training that goes into holding a pose for an extended period of time. Add to it extreme make-up, props, costume, hot lights and an audience and it's even more remarkable.

It's suggested that you get your tickets soon after they go on sale and that you get to the show early.

The Tableau Vivant Is Alive and Well and Living in Laguna Beach

New York Times

LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. - For his nightly role in the sprawling Pageant of the Masters, Michael Ziegler disrobes and stands patiently for 45 minutes while a makeup artist paints his body silver from head to toe.

"I feel a little bit warm and greasy," he said on a recent evening as he staggered cautiously out of a dressing room with his arms and legs wide apart so as not to smear the paint, like a horror-film mummy in G-string and flip-flops.

Yet after all that preparation, Mr. Ziegler, a 53-year-old airline customer service representative, goes onstage and does nothing. For 90 seconds, he stands utterly still - with one leg and arm outstretched, like the confederate across from him - in a re-creation of "The Dancers," a bronze sculpture by a largely forgotten artist.

Is the tableau vivant passé? Not for the 155,000 fans who flock to this beachside town each summer for the pageant. For them, the two-month extravaganza - a $4.1 million production that includes sets and lighting for nearly 40 art pieces on eight staging areas with live narration and orchestra - weaves a magic that is a welcome palliative to the freneticism of modern-day entertainment.

Pageant History

In 1932, at the first Festival of Arts, artist Lolita Perine had an idea for a living work of art. Convincing residents of Laguna Beach to dress in costume, she seated them behind an oversized frame, recreating well-known works of art. The "Spirit of the Masters Pageant" was formally started the next year by the Festival's organizers and was put on again in 1934, but in those early days was an awfully amateurish operation.

In 1934, local developer Roy Ropp expressed his dissatisfaction with the poor quality of the production in blunt terms; the Festival's board responded to his frank criticism by placing him in charge of the Pageant. He renamed it the "Pageant of the Masters" and with the assistance of his wife Marie, organized a high-quality and well-received production in the summer of 1935.

Building upon this initial success, the Ropps continued to refine and improve the Pageant through its 1941 production; then the Festival and Pageant were suspended for four years due to World War II. Because of increasing personal friction between the Ropps and the Festival's board, Roy Ropp came back only once after the war to direct the Pageant, in 1950. He died in 1974, but today is still remembered as the "Father of the Pageant."

Pageant of the Masters Where Art Comes To Life!

Each night during the summer season at 8:30 the Festival of Arts presents its most famous attraction, the Pageant of the Masters.

What is it?

Ninety minutes of "living pictures" - incredibly faithful art re-creations of classical and contemporary works with real people posing to look exactly like their counterparts in the original pieces. An outdoor amphitheater, professional orchestra, original score, live narration, intricate sets, sophisticated lighting, expert staff, and hundreds of dedicated volunteers have won recognition for the Pageant as the best presentation of its kind.

A Passion to Play: An ornament from a 1930s perfume bottle

Mothering Heights

When we moved to Laguna a couple of years ago, I thought to myself 'this is the place where I will return to my true love--the theater.' Ever since I played Emily in my high school's production of Our Town, I was smitten. I acted in a couple of plays in college, but ended up working in the film business as a writer and director. So when I saw a casting call titled "Girl Shortage" in the May 26th Independent, my interest was piqued:

"The Pageant of the Masters is seeking females age 18 to 35, 5'-3" to 5'-8 willing to volunteer for this summer's show, July 7 through Sept. 1. Partial nudity is required. Five roles have yet to be cast, including an ornament from a 1930s perfume bottle."

I examined the text carefully and figured I could pass for a 5' 5", 35 year old. My brain skipped over the words "volunteer," and headed straight for "partial nudity." Could I actually be nude on stage? That was something I had never contemplated.

Mannequin / Freeze Modeling article

When I was first given this assignment I thought it would actually be a breeze to write. As I "googled" "Mannequin Modeling" to get as much information as possible, I quickly realized that I had my work cut out for me because there appeared to be some confusion as to what "Mannequin Modeling" really is. So I put out some feelers to my model friends in the industry and the feedback was truly interesting.

Mannequin modeling, also known as "Freeze" modeling, is defined as:

"Learning how to be so stationary, that people are not sure if you are really real. Generally used for store windows or for an event to draw people in, the human model poses as a lifelike mannequin and may make subtle movements to attract onlookers and draw curiosity."

The trend began in the mid 1970s, when Abraham & Straus' Flagship Store which was located in Downtown Brooklyn, put Mannequin modeling on the map. Linda Timmins, head of the division at the time, selected one juvenile and one ingénue with "The Editorial Look" from each of the high schools across the Brooklyn and Manhattan areas.

Art Technique: A case study

Most of us are familiar with an artistic technique called trompe-l'oiel. Taken from the French words for "fool the eye", the term refers to paintings or other artworks that are so realistic that they fool the viewer's eye into thinking that they are the real thing. We see a garden scene created with trompe-l'oiel technique and we want to reach out and pick the flowers, dabble our feet in the creek, duck behind a column to avoid a rather angry-looking bumblebee.

The Southern California city of Laguna Beach each summer reverses this process. Instead of making painted surfaces seem as real as life, living human models are made to look like paintings and other forms of art. You could say that it was a case of life imitating art.

The occasion for this annual transformation is the "Pageant of the Masters", a full-length program of tableaux vivants that each year accompanies two annual art festivals. Laguna Beach is located in Orange County, certainly better known for its theme parks like Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm. But Laguna Beach is a city that is home to a very high number of artists, many of whom make their living by painting and photographing the beautiful scenery of this part of the California coast, and so it is appropriate that the summer amusements here should center on Picasso and not Mickey and Minnie.

Living Pictures, Missing Persons

Mannequins, Museums, and Modernity

In the late nineteenth century, Scandinavian urban dwellers developed a passion for a new, utterly modern sort of visual spectacle: objects and effigies brought to life in astonishingly detailed, realistic scenes. The period 1880-1910 was the popular high point of mannequin display in Europe.

Living Pictures, Missing Persons explores this phenomenon as it unfolded with the rise of wax museums and folk museums in the largest cities of Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. Mark Sandberg asks: Why did modernity generate a cultural fascination with the idea of effigy? He shows that the idea of effigy is also a portal to understanding other aspects of visual entertainment in that period, including the widespread interest in illusionistic scenes and tableaux, in the "portability" of sights, spaces, and entire milieus.

Sandberg investigates this transformation of visual culture outside the usual test cases of the largest European metropolises. He argues that Scandinavian spectators desired an unusual degree of authenticity--a cultural preference for naturalism that made its way beyond theater to popular forms of museum display.

The Scandinavian wax museums and folk-ethnographic displays of the era helped pre-cinematic spectators work out the social implications of both voyeuristic and immersive display techniques. This careful study thus anticipates some of the central paradoxes of twentieth-century visual culture--but in a time when the mannequin and the physical relic reigned supreme, and in a place where the contrast between tradition and modernity was a high-stakes game.
