Lola is a name with the connotation of excessively seductive. From theater, to music, to cartoons, Lola seems to be a bit slutty. So, why would I make a page on this topic? Do I have a problem with the name Lola? Has one Lola tainted me against all Lolas?
No. I have no problem with the name Lola. I kind of like it. I don't even know any Lolas. But I do think that Lola has the evokes the image of a vamp, and I am a little concerned with all the babies being named Lola. Why put that on a kid? I think Lola is more of a name to take on. If your personality is Lola, then use it as your nickname, stage name, pen name. If you NEED to name your kid Lola, make it a middle name - so if their personality is Lola they can use it - if not they can make it 'L'.
Do you really think there will be a President Lola? Secretary of State Lola? etc.
History of the Name Lola

Related names are Louise, Charlotte, and Carol, Doloros, and Lolita (with only Lolita coming anywhere close to the seductive nature of Lola).

Not hard, huh? Thats because it's probably been stuck in your head since you hit this page. Odds are it is one of these (lyrics printed a the bottom of the page).
1) Copacabana - "Her name was Lola, she was a showgirl"
2) Whatever Lola Wants - "Whatever Lola wants
Lola gets And little man, little Lola wants you"
3) Lola lo-lo-lo-lo Lola - "But Lola smiled and took me by the hand And said dear boy Im gonna make you a man" - (Even if Lola ends up being a man, he was a slutty man. And, why do you think he chose the name Lola?)
Lola Montez: Slutty Lola Pioneer
(February 17, 1821 - January 17, 1861)
Lola Montez was was an Irish-born dancer and actress who became famous as an exotic dancer, courtesan and the mistress of King Ludwig I of Bavaria.Historian Michael Cannon says "In September 1855 she performed her erotic Spider Dance at the Theatre Royal in Melbourne, raising her skirts so high that the audience could see she wore no underclothing at all. Next day the Argus thundered that her performance was 'utterly subversive to all ideas of public morality'. Respectable families ceased to attend the theatre, which began to show heavy losses." (Melbourne After the Gold Rush, p.313-4).

Bonny says:
When I think of Lola, I think of the book Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov. I had to study it for my Psychology course. It's a very controversial story about a middle aged man who becomes obsessed with a really young girl. Her name was Dolores Haze. That book is the reason the name "Lolita" got associated to mean a sexually precocious young girl. Does it make all girls who are named Lola or Lolita slutty? No, I don't think so. But does Lola sound slutty? Yes, simply because of this famous book.

If a woman wants it to be so it will. My 1 1/2 year old daughter is named Lola and it suits her personality: a sillyheart and a kind, sweet girl. It's a meloldic name that is fun to say. Is it any wonder there are songs about it?

My 4 month old baby girl is named Lola, and I don't think she is going to be at all slutty; spoiled maybe but not slutty. It's horrible to stereotype someone by their name. Plus it is a very unusual name, not very many women are named Lola: that's why we picked it because of it's uniqueness.

FILM 050 - CINEMATIC NAMES: Looking for Lola
Couse description:
- CINE 050.401 - Looking for Lola
- Course Description: We all know about Eve and Mary, two names that readily designate opposite relations to masculinity and sexuality. But what about Lola? Beginning in the early twentieth century, the name of Lola has gripped the imagination of directors and screenwriters and launched a cinematic tradition. The name is certainly based on Lola Montez, a nineteenth-century British woman of humble origins who used her sexuality and prevaricating charm to rise to worldwide renown as an erotic dancer and the lover of composers (Lizst) and kings (Ludwig of Bavaria), leaving disaster in her wake. Ever since Marlene Dietrich's seductive role as Lola Lola, the risqué nightclub entertainer in Joseph Sternberg's scandalous Blue Angel (1930), the name Lola has specified the realm of the quintessential vamp. In this course we will explore the cinematic femininity, sexuality and gender associated with the name Lola (and its close cousins Lulu and Lolita). We will encounter Lolas of ambiguous, precocious, calculating, and irresistible sexuality: a Turkish-German transvestite, a sexual nymph, a schemer during Germany's economic miracle, and a man-killer eventually slain by Jack the Ripper. What is remarkable about the films associated with Lola is that each discovers her anew and contributes to a complex nexus of issues involving sexuality, pleasure, knowledge, and power, far more interesting, in the final analysis, than the alternatives of Mary and Eve.

- I am a 52 year woman named Lola. I was named after my Great Grandmother to whom was a Saint. I love my name, and always have. I am always getting the songs sung to me, I just laugh and go about my business. I always wished that my mother had named me Lola Marie cause I though that was a beautiful name. But she named me Lola Jan, to which her mother called me Jan because she didn't like the name Lola. Oh well, I never liked her much anyway...lol As far as it being a slutty name, I have know alot of stuts named Molly, so it must not be in the name...Give your baby girl a hug from, and old Lola...Hugs

- I have a 2 year old named Lola. At first, I was dead set against naming her Lola. I just did what EVERYONE above has done and catagorized my unborn child. However, every AM for 9 months my son Cooper would sit and eat his cornflakes watching Looney Toons. He would rub my belly and talk to his "sweet little Lola bunny baby sister". Needless to say the name grew on me and now we have Lola Marie. I will say I get super irritated when people say " Ohhhh, she is so cute, what is her name?" I say LOLA and then they start singing either Neil Diamond, or, they say, "ya know, whatever Lola wants Lola gets". My little princess is going to HATE me if she has to listen to that for the rest of her life! However, I have no regrets...heck, I am a Jennifer, BORING!

- It's a brilliant idea for a lens. I like that it covers every conceivable aspect of Lola. I had no idea it was controversial. I've met very nice people named Lola. I read Lolita too, but didn't think to expand the connotations to everyone named Lola.

- Nobody does "Whatever Lola Wants..." better than Sarah Vaughn. Whenever I listen to that song I think seductress, not necessarily slut. To me, there is a difference.

- Umm. My grandmother was named Dolores and I was named (middle name) after her. And everyone called her Lola. I never knew there was anything at all slutty about the name until I was older. And why did they pick on that name? My grandmother was most definitely not slutty!!

- I know a girl who has the name of Lola, she most certainly is not a slut. she is kind and warm hearted. It is not the name which which is slutty or otherwise bad, it is peoples minds and perceptions.

- My daughter was born on the 28th of March this year in Sydney and we named her Lola. We think it is a lyrical sounding name, with great feminine qualities and a little quirky. I laughed when I read the above because her wonderful Grandmother who is eccentric and deliciously feminine is called Lulu!
