The Magnificent Seven, a group of seven huge cemeteries in London, were central to the Victorian attitude to death, and have since become part of the 'alternative tourist attractions' in London.

This lens is not only dedicated to those seven cemeteries - it is also dedicated to all London cemeteries [as I visit them].

Apologies for the lack of information on here - for some reason my original lens was deleted due to my inactivity :(

Why cemeteries? Why London?

What is so special about London Cemeteries?
The cemeteries of London have social, historical, economical and ecological importance.

The Magnificent Seven and more

Links to London Cemetery sites.
Friends of Kensal Green Cemetery
One of the Magnificent Seven - the first one in fact - and my favourite London Cemetery by far.
Brompton Cemetery
Royal Parks - Brompton Cemetery website. One of the Magnificent Seven. A really interesting cemetery - I don't recommend that women walk around here alone though!
Abney Park Cemetery Trust
Another of the Magnificent Seven - I've still got to visit this one!
Friends of Nunhead Cemetery
A very overgrown cemetery in South-East London. Not many angels, but some interesting monuments none-the-less. One of the Magnificent Seven.
Friends of West Norwood Cemetery
Another of the Magnificent Seven - a beautiful cemetery that is essential to see especially for the Greek section.
Highgate Cemetery
Probably the most famous of London's Magnificent Seven cemeteries.

Photography Links

There are many of us out there who take photos of cemeteries. Here are a few of my favourites - including myself! ;)
Polstar Photography
This is a link to my photography site. I know it's self-promotion, but really, would you expect me not to?
e.katie holm - Cemetery Photographer extraordinaire
If it wasn't for this woman, I wouldn't spend most of my weekends skulking around cemeteries.
Pamela Williams
Beautiful cemetery photography - not necessarily London Cemeteries but interesting nonetheless.
London Cemeteries
What a fantastic site! Sue Bailey is currently aiming to photograph every single London Cemetery. Something I myself would LOVE to do.
A brilliant photographic resource.
London Necropolis
Ok, more self-promotion (send me your links - I'll promote you!). This is definitely a work in progress. I'm trying to visit and photograph every cemetery in London - currently in much need of construction due to time constraints.

Books on London Cemeteries and the Victorian attitude to death.

I haven't read all of these ... in fact a lot are on my wishlist.
But they are appropriate reads.
I highly recommend Hugh Mellor's book.

About Polstar

OOOH I hate these bios. I'm a teacher, an obsessive photographer (not a particularly good one), an avid reader and writer, a player of games, a dancer of dances, a singer of songs out of tune ... I eat, drink and sleep like any normal person.  I watch films obsessively, I laugh heartedly at anything Chris Morris does, and I love living in London.
