'Turning' Out a Long Golf Drive

Shift That Weight

Driving the ball deep requires tremendous club-head speed. To get this speed you need to develop torque on the golf club. The torque comes from turning your body.

Snapping your wrists will reduce torque not add to it. The shaft of your club is designed to 'snap' or 'whip'. If you also snap your wrists, you'll cancel out (or reduce) the snap of the club. This will prevent you from getting long golf drives.

Turning your hips in the backswing also reduces torque. You want to minimize hip movement into the backswing. The hips should turn forward as you rotate through your swing as this helps to maintain the tension created in the backswing. The key is to release all the energy at the right moment. That's the key to long golf drives.

The turn must come from your shoulders. Here are some tips:

  • Turn from the spine as an axis.
  • Turn your front shoulder enough that it actually moves behind the ball at the top of your swing.
  • You should turn enough that your back is actually facing the target.
  • Minimize hip movement by stabilizing your front knee, don't let it break to the inside.
  • Downswing by bringing your arms down, turning your hip around to the front, and rotating your shoulders through.
  • Turn your back knee inwards and push with back leg for even more power (can your control it?). Watch Tiger Woods' golf swing to see this technique in perfection.

These tips should ensure a proper weight shift in your swing. Long golf drives require a proper weight shift.

Get A Grip and Drive the Golf Ball Long

Holding the Club Right

Another important aspect to hitting long golf drives is how you hold the club.

Don't Grip the Club Too Tightly:
Gripping the club tightly in the palms of your hands will cause the club to move slower, and it will take longer for the clubhead to close in and square up on the ball.

You need to hold the club lightly and with your fingers (ie: the base of the fingers). This will allow the club to turn quickly and develop a powerful 'snap' that releases tremendous energy into the ball. This is essential for hitting long golf drives.

Release The Grip at Impact:
The thumb on your lower hand should release up off the club just before impact. Instead of gripping the club, you'll just be cradling it with your 4 fingers, while your thumb is giving a 'thumbs up' for the long golf drive you've just hit.
