You Are From Long Island If...

The anonymous joke email You know you're from Long Island if... has been passed along and forwarded amongst Long Islanders for as long as there has been email service. It's just one of those things that no matter how many times you receive it, if you're from the Island, you have to read it and laugh.

As you may have guessed, I got another copy today and decided to turn it into a tribute to my former place of residence, the place that no matter where I actually live, I will always refer to as "home".

Includes links and info about Long Island teams and celebrities

Long Island, NY - A Tribute is an ongoing interactive project of mine and will be updated and added to as time permits. Stop back often to see what's new.

You Know You're From Long Island If...

The Joke ~Part 1~

You live in the shadow of the greatest city in the world, but you almost never go there.

When you're away from Long Island , you love it and when you're there, you don't.

You think if you're not from Long Island or NYC, you're not really from New York.

You know the exact point at which Queens turns into Nassau simply on intuition.

You don't go to Manhattan, you go to "The City".

You never realize you have an accent till you leave.

You don't live in Long Island, You live ON Long Island.

About Long Island

Long Island is an island in southeast New York, USA. It is also a major suburb of New York City, and was one of the first modern suburbs in the United States.

True to its name, the island is much longer than it is wide, jutting out some 118 miles (190 km) from New York Harbor, and varies in width between 12 - 23 miles (19 - 37 km) between the southern Atlantic coast and Long Island Sound.[1] Long Island has an area of 1,401 square miles (3,629 km²), making it the largest island in the continental United States and the 149th largest island in the world.[1] It is connected to the mainland by several bridges and tunnels through New York City.

The Big Duck, Flanders, NY

The Big Duck is a ferrocement building in the shape of a duck located in Flanders, New York, on Long Island. It was originally built in 1931 by duck farmer Martin Maurer in nearby Riverhead, and used as a shop to sell ducks and duck eggs.

The Big Duck is a prime example of literalism in advertising. The building measures 18 feet wide, 30 feet long and 20 feet tall to the top of the head. The duck's eyes are made from Ford Model T tail lights and the interior floor space is confined to 11 feet by 15 feet. The wood frame, wire mesh/concrete surface building was designed in the shape of a Pekin duck in order to house a retail poultry store.

Billy Joel

Grew Up on Long Island

William Joseph Martin "Billy" Joel (born May 9, 1949) is an American singer-songwriter. He released his first hit song, "Piano Man", in 1973. According to the RIAA, he is the sixth best-selling recording artist in the United States.

Joel had Top 10 hits in the '70s, '80s, and '90s; is a six-time Grammy Award winner; and has sold in excess of 150 million albums worldwide. He was inducted into the Songwriter's Hall of Fame (Class of 1992), the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (Class of 1999), and the Long Island Music Hall of Fame (Class of 2006). Joel retired from recording pop music in 1993 but continued to tour (sometimes with Elton John). In 2001 he subsequently released Fantasies & Delusions, a CD of classical compositions for piano. In 2007 he returned to recording with a single entitled "All My Life", followed by an extensive "World Tour" from 2005-2007, covering many of the major world cities.

Hey, I Know That Place!
By Jack Mathews | Staff Writer

If the film setting looks familiar, it may be because you've seen it before -- right here on Long Island.

With computers, you can do anything, so let's say we're on a computer, and we have just compressed the 20th Century into one moment. The category is ``Movies: Long Island,'' and on the screen is a map of the Island, dotted from the left end of Queens to the right point of Montauk with little icons of motion picture cameras. So we move the cursor to the first icon on the left, resting on the east side of the Queensboro Bridge, and double-click. Instantly (this is a very fast computer) the screen is filled with a live image from a movie set. There's a jumble of equipment -- props and cables and lights and scaffolding and Portalets and motor homes.

You don't associate Fire Island with gay men.

The Hamptons, Long Island, NY

The Hamptons refers specifically to the towns of Southampton and East Hampton on the South Fork, Suffolk County, New York on the east end of Long Island.

As usual in a summer colony, parts of the Hamptons are well known as a playground for the rich who own summer homes there. Others are seaside resorts frequented by middle class residents of New York City particularly during the summer months for weekend getaways. The Montauk Branch of the Long Island Railroad, Montauk Highway, and the Hampton Jitney provide connections to the rest of Long Island and to the City, while ferries connect North Haven and Montauk to Shelter Island and New England, respectively.

The Joke ~Part5~

When people ask "where are you from?" you answer "The Island" and automatically assume
everyone in the world knows that answer means New York.

You've always liked Billy Joel and you own several of his "records."

The Belt Parkway sucks! You've been stuck in a traffic jam for more than 2 hours (without moving).

Your parents took you to All American, Nathan's or
Carvel(on the way home from the beach).

Regular gas - $3.29 and you still pay it!!!

You hate paying tolls.

You don't have to go far to see your family.

You remember Grumman.

You know the color of the water at Jones Beach is not BLUE!

Jones Beach

Jones Beach State Park is a state park of the U.S. state of New York. It is located in southern Nassau County, in the hamlet of Wantagh, on Jones Beach Island, a barrier island linked to Long Island by the Meadowbrook Parkway and Wantagh Parkway across the Great South Bay.

The park is renowned for its excellent beaches, 6.5 mi (10 km) in length, facing the open Atlantic Ocean and furnishes one of the most popular summer recreational locations for the New York City area. It is the most popular and heavily visited beach on the East Coast, estimated that over eight million people per year visit the Beach.

Nikon at Jones Beach Theater, an outdoor arena in the park, is a popular musical concert venue. The park also has a 2 mi (3.2 km) long boardwalk. It once featured dining and catering facilities that are popular sites for private parties and weddings; these have been shut down.

You Know You're From Long Island If ...

The Joke ~Part 6~

You were upset when all the Roy Rogers turned into
Wendy's and Arby's closed for good. (But they are back now!)

You can spout off all the LIRR stops between Penn Station and Huntington ..

Paying $35 for a haircut doesn't sound so crazy.

You think the people from Brooklyn are "da wunz dat tawk wit a accent."

You went sledding in the sumps and at Bald Hill Ski Bowl.

You knew of Massapequa before the Amy Fisher-Joey Buttafuoco nightmare.

You think going to Queens is a hike.

The first time you heard the term " Long Island Iced
Tea" you were somewhere else and you laughed.

Our Favorite Cocktail

Long Island Iced Tea

A Long Island Iced Tea is a cocktail made with, among other ingredients, vodka, gin, tequila, and rum. A popular variation mixes equal parts vodka, gin, rum, tequila, and triple sec with 1 1/2 parts sour mix with a splash of cola. Close variants often replace the sour mix with sweet and sour mix or with lemon juice, and the cola with actual iced tea. Some chain restaurants even take the liberty of substituting brandy for the tequila.

Some claim that the drink, like most cocktails, was invented during the Prohibition era, as a way of taking the appearance of a non-alcoholic drink (iced tea). A lemon slice is often added to enhance this resemblance. To some, the drink also shares a similar taste to tea. This has led to its frequent use in fiction as a method to get a teetotaler drunk.

However, evidence suggested that Long Island Iced Tea was first served in the late 1970s by Robert (Rosebud) Butt, a bartender at the Oak Beach Inn, in the Town of Babylon, Long Island, New York.

The drink has a much higher alcohol concentration (~28%) than most cocktails because of the proportionally small amount of mixer.

This cocktail is often altered in other countries, due to the unpopularity of sour mix. Long Island Iced Tea served outside the States is often made of liquors and cola alone (without sour mix), with lemon or lime juice, or with lime cordial.

The Joke ~Part 8~

No, you don't want mustard on that burger!!

You can't understand why a diner would ever close.

You've had a seagull crap on your car.

You've tried to find the Amityville Horror house.

112 Ocean Avenue

The Real Amityville Horror House

The most infamous house on Long Island resides at 112 Ocean Avenue, Amityville, NY. The address, off Merrick Road, still attracts the attention of couriosity seekers who want to see the real Amityville horror house.

This home was depicted in the movie The Amityville Horror, and its sequel, and 2005 remake, as a place haunted by evil after a young man murdered 6 members of his family there on Novemeber 14, 1974.

The crime is factual. The haunting, well... I'll leave that for you to decide but I'm sure the folks who lived there back in 1979, when the movie was first released, sure felt like they were being haunted by excessive traffic in their once quiet neighborhood.

I am guilty of being one of the many who had to drive by and see it for myself. To be honest, there was nothing spooky about it, except of course the knowledge that so many had lost their lives there. Compared to the sinister monster shown on the big screen, the real house doesn't even really stand out from the rest of the homes on the block.

I found a fantastic article online that contains the entire story of the demise of the DeFeo family that starts with a recounting of the actual 911 phone call reporting the deaths of the DeFeo's up to the writing of the book that exploited their fate.

You can read the entire article, which includes photos, at The Real Amityville Horror: The Tragic Death of the Ronald DeFeo Family

You Know You're From Long Island If ...

The Joke ~Conclusion~

When you live somewhere else you are astounded to see that people actually stop at yellow lights.

When you just sort of presume that wherever you live, you'll be able to find good delis, good pizza, and good bagels.

You can name at least three bands that came from Long Island.

When you walk in the city and you see two men holding hands... it becomes normal to you.

No word ends in an ER, just an AH.

You actually get these jokes and pass them on to family and other friends from Long Island!
