Why Learn Affiliate Marketing?

I'm a full time affiliate marketer and I LOVE it! Think about it ... LOTS of money, no schedule, no boss, no inventory, no clients, no consulting work ... just pure imagination turning into money.
This wasn't always the case I can assure you. I spent the past decade as a software developer, took part in a Silicone Vally startup, went public, market crashed, lost everything and started all over again.
Eventually I started a successful web design company with my wife that we still operate today. Well, I should say she operates, now that I'm a full time affiliate marketer.
The problem for me was that although I had my own web design company, I was still trading time for money. I was billing by the hour which meant if I wasn't working I wasn't making money.
It wasn't very clear to me how I was getting any closer to my dream of not having to work.
Anyways, in the last quarter of 2007 I was looking for a way to market an online service I was involved with and I decided to learn affiliate marketing. I was aware of the industry, but I never really investigated it much since I didn't really believe marketing was something I'd Like.
Turns out I was so wrong about marketing, and affiliate marketing in particular, that I seriously regret not getting involved years ago. I've since learned just how much freedom there is to "do your own thing" in affiliate marketing that you really can make it the business you want it to be.
When I decided to learn affiliate marketing I had no idea how much my eyes would be opened to the economics of the web economy. It really is still the very beginning of the gold rush.

It simply reads your RSS feeds and gradually (read 'naturally') submits your blog or website content to dozens of social bookmarking sites for you. Check out this tool and watch your PR go up and the time you spend bookmarking your content go down. Simple as that. It's a can't live without tool! - Directory Maximizer
- An Absolute Must! If you want to achieve decent organic listings in Google you need one way incoming links from websites with decent Google page ranking. Directory Maximizer is one of the best tools in my arsenal for doing this. They can submit my website to web directories with specific page ranks for only $0.14 per directory. I usually spend $28 for 200 listings in directories with a specific Google page rank of 3 or higher. And of course you can buy links from directories from all range of Google page rank.
Two reasons getting your website or Squidoo page listed in these directories. First is that these are permanent links. Once they're in there they are there for good. Second is that it's very cheap to get listed in smaller and newer directories with low Google page ranks. You can get into hundreds of them for under $30. The bonus part is that although not all of these will grow to be monster directories with Google page rank of 8, but some of them likely will and when they are that big, they will cost you dearly to get into. But since you're already there you can ride the success of the directory all for that original $0.14 you paid to get listed.

- Building quality back links to your web site is crucial for building page rank and and getting a decent listing in the search engines. The problem is it can be so #%$^@ time consuming. One free solution I've been having fun with lately is Comment Kahuna. It's a pretty slick tool worth checking out.
Comment Kahuna is a free windows utility that takes the grudge work out of building back links through blog commenting. It's simple to use and will save you huge amounts of time by locating blog posts related to your keywords and then filtering out the nofollow blogs.

Although Comment Kahuna and Real Link Finder serve the same purpose, Comment Kahuna has recently released a few new versions that have made the tool quite valuable to me. It now supports squidoo so it will help you find squidoo lenses to comment on as well. Very big time saver!
Did I mention it's FREE!? - Free Classifieds - USFreeads (Obviously FREE)
- Free classifieds. Place your classified ads at USFreeads (they have great page rank) and see how far a little Google juice can take you. Back links from UsFreeads go a long way in the eyes Google. They get indexed pretty much nightly.

I highly recommend the following educational resources for those of you looking to learn affiliate marketing at a much deeper level and a swifter pace.
- The Wealthy Affiliates
- The Wealthy Affiliate University is one of the best affiliate marketing schools available. A vast majority of my success derives from what I've learned from the Wealthy Affiliates (Kyle and Carson) as well as from people I've met through the Wealthy Affiliate members forum.
In addition to the huge learning resource center filled with top notch tutorials, there is the members forum which is a significant resource you won't find anywhere else. The forum, consisting of a few thousand members ranging in skill level from complete beginner to those clearing 4 figures a day, is like having experts on call. It is my most frequent stomping ground for keeping up with affiliate marketing techniques. - Yahoo Answers Traffic Guide (FREE)
- This FREE 24 page guide to generating traffic with Yahoo Answers is worth the read if you're new to Yahoo Answers ... or if you just hate writing full length articles.
- How to make a Small Fortune Online Without Paying for any Advertising
- Codrut is a success story we can all learn from, and he's more than willing to teach. In fact he's done something incredible, something I haven't seen anyone else do ... he coached 100 people to their first $300 in 20 days!

- How many website accounts do you have spread across the web? If you're doing your job as an affiliate marketer you're probably building quite a collection, especially with the growing power of social marketing.
Next question ... how many of those sites are you using the same username and password? Doesn't that sound a bit risky?
RoboForm will save you more time EVERY single day than any other tool I know of and it keeps your passwords safe and encrypted too.

- EVERY successful marketer knows the mailing list (opt-in) is one of the most important tools they have in their arsenal. Waiting too long to start one is also the number 1 mistake new marketers make. They're inexpensive, easy to use and are responsible for probably a majority of my revenue.
Why do you think so many web sites have an email signup? Because these marketers know that when someone gives them permission to correspond with them through email they now have increased the value of that lead many times over.
Consider this. You're an affiliate marketer and so you're committing time, resources and money to sell a product for someone else. Makes sense, it's a cost of doing business. Besides you're building a business and making money every time you sell something. The problem is, you're not building your business. You're building the business of the guy your sending your leads to. You're paying so he can build HIS list of customers.
If you're not capturing leads with an opt-in you only have one customer and that's the company who's product you're selling. The other guy has the "customers" you only get the commission. meanwhile the company you're promoting can continue to sell to their same customer over and over again while you battle it out for a new lead. It simply doesn't make sense for you to pay to build someone else's business. Get your own mailing list going so you can capture customers and still get the sales commission.

The traffic generated from HubPages is considerable and growing daily. If you're not developing pages on HubPages then it's quite likely you will be in 6 months from now!
- WordTracker (FREE)
- Doing a little keyword research? Everyone knows the free overture database kind of sucks. Wordtracker is the name of the game these days and fortunately the link above is an ALWAYS FREE keyword research tool provided by Wordtracker.

Affiliate Networks
If you're going to learn affiliate marketing you're going to need something to market
Through these affiliate networks you'll be able to access and market tens of thousands of products and services ranging from software to legal services that you can market as an affiliate marketer.
- Click Bank
- ClickBank is the largest affiliate network for the distribution of digital products. This is usually one of the first places new affiliates start. There are over 10,000 digital products you can market for as much as 75% of the profit!
- Pepper Jam Network
- One of the relatively new kids on the block is looking to really shake up the affiliate networks. These giuys are very professional and as a result attract some very professional companies for you to market.
can you say ... jelly Belly, Warnar Brothers, Sesame Street, telaflora, and yes ... even Playboy. - Share A Sale
- One of the larger networks that deals in all sorts of products and services. Even legal and financial services.
- PayDotCom
- These guys are new and are hoping to compete with ClickBank. I would definitely check them out. They offer both digital and physical products. It also very easy to become a product vendor here so if you have a product in mind this is a place you should not overlook. I believe the famed super affiliate Mike Filsaime is behind this site.
- Commission Junction
- Commission Junction is one of the most respected affiliate networks in the business. They offer many tangible products and services you can market.

My $2,000,000 Party Deadline
My count down to $2,000,000 ... I work better under pressure
I'm goal driven so I've set a self imposed deadline for attaining a net worth of $2,000,000. The funny thing about it is that when I first started affiliate marketing my wife was pretty skeptical, and I was a bit too. Anyway, at that time I set a deadline of 5 years and my wife laughed. Then after sales started rolling in we were in a bit of shock that it was working. Now I'm laughing as I continue adjusting the deadline shorter and shorter. I think we're down to about 2 1/2 years now. I guess time will tell :)
Don't get the wrong idea though ... I consider $2,000,000 a starting point. Basic life security. $2,000,000 is where the fun really begins! $2,000,000 is what I need for my first big party! I hope you can join me!
