Sail By James Patterson

Since the death of her husband, Anne Dunne and her three children have struggled in every way. In a last ditch effort to save the family, Anne plans an elaborate sailing vacation to bring everyone together once again. But only an hour out of port, everything is going wrong. The teenage daughter, Carrie, is planning to drown herself. The teenage son, Mark, is high on drugs and ten-year-old Ernie is nearly catatonic. This is the worst vacation ever.
Anne manages to pull things together bit by bit, but just as they begin feeling like a family again, something catastrophic happens. Survival may be the least of their concerns.
Written with the blistering pace and shocking twists that only James Patterson can master, SAIL takes "Lost" and "Survivor" to a new level of terror.

About James Patterson

James Patterson is one of America's favorite storytellers, with more than 77 million 8n print in forty languages, making him one of the top-selling writers of all time.

He is also the author of the two top new detective series of the past decade: the Women's Murder Club and the Alex Cross novels, including Along Came a Spider and Kiss the Girls, as well as the best selling love stories Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas and Sam's Letters to Jennifer.

James Patterson is an author who can write books almost faster than folks can read them. OK, that isn't quite true, but he does have a penchant for getting multiple books published each year.

Who is SARK?

SARK, an author, artist, and incest survivor with many years of therapy and self-healing behind her, wishes to shine her "beacon of hope to the world" as she encourages and inspires women of all ages to become "succulent." She defines this as transcending past pains and feeling the freedom of full self-expression. Very candidly she shares the tragic, the glorious, the intimate, and the adventurous in her life, dispensing sage advice and a lengthy menu of readily doable suggestions for arousing creativity and nurturing self-discovery. Bubbly, humorous, and at times just far-out, SARK is enjoyable to listen to. Her program, comprised of passages from her 1997 book of the same title, stories, and anecdotes, belongs in public library self-help collections and also in the hands of men who seek a better understanding of the women in their lives.

It is interesting in scanning the reviews of this book, over ninety percent are five star... but the ones who disagree seem to give it, for the most part, one star. It is a book which brings out strong opinions. Reactionaries and fundementalists will have a hard time with this book because it does not reinforce their dogma. It instead addresses the broad spectrum of beliefs, encourages tolerance, openness, and exploration of self and of all aspects of life, including religion and spirit. That would drive the reactionaries over the edge. There are so few books which can actually add something to your life, day after day, month after month, year after year. This is one of them. It is a book for women on the search to find more meaning in their daily ritual as caretakers, more joy in the everyday. It gives me something to think about each day of the year. I feel a bit sorry for those who give it the knee jerk New Age blasting. But, it takes all kinds to make the world go around.

True Colors: A Palette of Collaborative Art Journals

True Colors: A Palette of Collaborative Art Journals

Amazon Price: $29.95 (as of 12/28/2009)Buy Now

Of all the altered book/stamping/scrapbooking books I own (a jillion), and all the magazines I subscribe to (also a jillion), this is my HANDS DOWN favorite book. I look at it often - and I can't say that for the other books in my studio (okay, not a studio, just a way-overcrowded corner of the basement).

Anyway, this book is one of THE books that launched a thousand imitations (particularly in the scrapbooking world), and it is still the leader of the pack.

What I love most about this book is its wholeness. Most artist/altered journal books show just the BEST pages from many books, so you never really get a sense of how any single artists book gels, of how the artistic vision plays out.

THIS book is different! We get to see 15 (or is it 12) artist books in their entirety! You can look at each thematic book and get a sense of how many different ways the theme (in the case of True Colors the theme of each book is a specific color) can be interpreted. Or, you can track each artists' work in each of the 15 books to get a more complete sense of their artistic style and vision.

There is so much to learn here. Study the construction of each of the 15 beautiful books - simple, complex, they are all divine. Turn to any page and study the use of color, of paint, the use of embellishments, the building of a unified theme. It is really amazing and so inspiring. (Note, however, that this is NOT a how-to book, and techniques are not provided.)

I know the book is expensive, but it will give you countless hours of pleasure and inspiration. It's THAT good

Harlan Coben is...........

Harlan Coben (born January 4, 1962) is a Jewish American author of mystery novels.

The plots of his novels often involve the resurfacing of unresolved or misinterpreted events in the past (such as murders, fatal accidents, etc.) and often have multiple plot twists. Both series of Coben's books are set in and around New York and New Jersey, and some of the supporting characters in two series of novels have appeared in both. His novels are most popular in the United States and France.

Coben was born to a Jewish family in Newark, New Jersey but was raised and schooled in Livingston, New Jersey. While at Amherst College, he was a member of Psi Upsilon fraternity.

Also a member of the Amherst chapter of Psi Upsilon at that time was Dan Brown, author of the DaVinci Code. They remain good friends to this day.

After graduating from Amherst College as a political science major, he worked in the travel industry, in a company owned by his grandfather.

He now lives in New Jersey with his wife, Anne Armstrong-Coben MD, a pediatrician, and their four children.

Coben was in his senior year at college when he realized he wanted to write.

His first book was accepted when he was twenty-six but after publishing two stand-alone thrillers in his twenties (Play Dead in 1990 and Miracle Cure in 1991) he decided on a change of direction and began a series of thrillers featuring his character Myron Bolitar.

The novels of the popular series follow the tales of a former basketball player turned sports agent (Bolitar), who often finds himself investigating murders involving his clients.

Coben has won an Edgar Award, a Shamus Award and an Anthony Award, and is the first writer to have received all three. He is also the first writer in more than a decade to be invited to write fiction for the New York Times op-ed page. He wrote a short story entitled "The Key to my Father", which appeared June 15, 2003.

In 2001 he released his first stand-alone thriller since the creation of the Myron Bolitar series in 1995, Tell No One, which went on to be his best selling novel to date. He followed Tell No One with four more stand-alone novels.

In 2006, Coben returned to his character Myron Bolitar with the eighth installment of the series, Promise Me, released May 17 in the United Kingdom.

His next novel was another stand-alone thriller titled The Woods, which was released on April 17 2007 in the United States.

His latest work, Hold Tight is schedule for an April 15, 2008 release.

Although this is another stand-alone novel, Coben commented on his official website that certain key characters from The Woods will make brief appearances.

The Artist's Way: A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity [10th Anniversary Edition]

I heard about this book a few months ago and was very sceptical at first. As more and more people around me started with it, I became curious and bought myself a copy. It was the best decision I have ever made! I am in week eleven and I can safely say that this book has changed my life, completely. It has taken the South African performing arts scene by storm and everyone I know who has read or is busy reading The Artist's Way feels the same way I do! Apart from the fact the the book contains so many truths, what makes this book such a pleasure to read is that it is so well written. If you are in doubt and you need just that little bit of encouragement, if you know deep down inside that there is an artist in you, that feels neglected or that you haven't yet discovered, take the plunge and start a wonderful journey! If you are a lawyer, accountant or a mother taking care of your family at home, don't be discouraged or misled by the book's title, it is for you too!

Thank you Julia Cameron!

The Five Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate

The Five Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate

Amazon Price: $10.19 (as of 12/28/2009)Buy Now

How's your relationship with your mate? Your children? Your parents? Your siblings? It may be a matter of the state of the "love tank".

Author Gary Chapman in his book The Five Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate believes everyone has a love tank, and that tank is filled by different love languages. These five languages are Gifts, Words of Affirmation, Quality of Time, Acts of Service, and Physical Touch.

Often, we tend to give love in the languages we are most fluent in, which usually ends up being the languages that fill up our love tank. This would be why a husband who does yard work, dishes, car maintenance, etc. (Acts of Service) is floored when his wife says "You never show me you love me. You never cuddle with me, or caress my hair, or make the first move for sex." (Physical Touch). Or, "Why don't you spend time with me? Why do you work so much?" (Quality Time). And, "Why don't you buy me flowers? Why don't you ever get me cards or balloons...just because?" (Gifts) Or "You never tell me what I mean to you. Why don't you ever share with me what I mean to you, or what my good qualities are?" (Words of Affirmation) But, if her language is primarily Acts of Service, she'll feel so loved and honored because her husband does so many things for her, and thus feels "full" in her love tank.

This may not sound like a big deal, but considering the divorce rate is 50% (as one relationship instance), and so many seem to be unhappy with their primary relationships, the concept of love languages may very well be a signficant factor in understanding self and others, and in relationship growth. Perhaps relationships get rocky or arrive at an impasse because individuals are speaking a different love language than what fills up the "love tank" of the object of their affection...and a result, the recipient doesn't feel loved. It's not that they feel empty and unfufilled because love isn't being given, but because the language "spoken" is not something that registers to the recipient as a form of love.

Chapman further theorizes that we usually have 2 main love languages that fill up our tank. He also says that if a person has a hard time identifying their main love languages, they've either been on empty for so long and are out of touch with their needs, or they have been so filled up by their spouse, that all 5 languages tend to speak to them equally.

A story in the book that illustrates the love tank theory is the "burnt toast syndrome". A woman was sick in bed. Her husband would always bring her burnt toast to her when she was ailing. She was so hurt and offended by this repeated insensitivity and ignorance, that she finally burst into tears one day, and asked him why he did that...and didn't he care? She was floored to hear him say "I'm sorry honey. I had no idea. Burnt toast is my favorite, and I gave you what I would consider my favorite breakfast...burnt toast."

Chapman writes: "When your spouse's emotional love tank is full and he feels secure in your love, the whole world looks right and your spouse will move out to reach his highest potential in life. But when the love tank is empty and he feels used but not loved, the whole world looks dark and he will likely never reach his potential for good in the world."

I recommend this book highly. It could very well be a relationship saver!

Who Is Dr Wayne Dyer?

Dr. Wayne Walter Dyer (born May 10, 1940 in Detroit, Michigan) is a popular American self-help advocate, author and lecturer. His 1976 book Your Erroneous Zones has sold over 30 million copies and is one of the best-selling books of all time.

It is said to have "[brought] humanistic ideas to the masses".

Dyer spent much of his adolescence in an orphanage.

He received his Doctor of Education in counseling from Wayne State University. He was a guidance counselor in Detroit at the high school level and a professor of counselor education at St. John's University in New York.

He first pursued an academic career, publishing in journals and running a successful private therapy practice, but his lectures at St. John's, which focused on positive thinking and motivational speaking techniques, attracted students beyond those enrolled. A literary agent persuaded Dyer to package his ideas in book form, resulting in Your Erroneous Zones; although initial sales were thin, Dyer quit his teaching job and began a publicity tour of the United States, doggedly pursuing bookstore appearances and media interviews ("out of the back of his station wagon", according to Michael Korda, making the best-seller lists "before book publishers even noticed what was happening", which eventually led to national television talk shows including Merv Griffin, The Tonight Show, and Phil Donahue.

Dyer proceeded to build on his success with lecture tours, a series of audiotapes, and regular publication of new books. Dyer's audience was not limited to business as with Dale Carnegie or Stephen Covey, and so his message resonated with many in the New Thought Movement and beyond . He often recounted anecdotes from his family life, and repeatedly used his own life experience as an example. His self-made man success story was a part of his appeal.

Dyer told readers to pursue self actualization, calling reliance on the self as a guide a "religious" experience, and suggested that readers emulate Jesus Christ, who he termed both an example of a self-actualized person, and a "preacher of self-reliance".

Dyer criticized societal focus on guilt, which he saw as an unhealthy immobilization in the present due to actions taken in the past. He advocated readers to see how parents, institutions, and even themselves had imposed guilt trips on them.

Although Dyer resisted the spiritual tag, by the 1990s he was altering his message to include more components of spirituality, in Real Magic, and higher consciousness, in Your Sacred Self.

Currently, his focus is on interpretations of Tao Te Ching and has many US speaking engagements.

Dyer lives in Maui, Hawaii. He has been married 3 times and divorced twice, having seven of his eight children by his third wife, Marcelene.
