Is Lord Sesshomaru A Crossdresser?

Ranked #4,096 in Culture & Society, #86,654 overall

Why I Say He Is...

Okay, admit it, the first time you saw Lord Sesshomaru, you said to yourself: "What a hot chick!" and than fifty seconds later you found yourself saying: "OMG! That's a guy! WTH?". I can't even begin to tell you how many times I have heard people say this. I've heard comments like this so many times now, that I decided it was high time some one did a study to find out why people look at this guy and think he's a she. The whole idea for this lens came to me, because I was reading a thread on a message board, where a group of Sesshy fans were debating over wither Lord Sesshomaru could be considered a cross dresser or not. Finding that no one had yet to do so, I am now setting it up as a MonkeyBrain debate so that I came farther examine this issue.

Of course a major stumbling block here, is that most people only know Lord Sesshomaru as he looks in the TV show, which, granted he does look like a woman in the TV show too, but if you ever wanted to see Sesshy looking a whole lot more feminine, you are going to want to get a copy of the book and look at what he looks like as he was created, and not how the TV animators re-interpreted him. While the TV show has only been around for 5 years, Lord Sesshomaru has been around for 11 years now as a character on a book series that spans 54 volumes.

Reason #1: Oh Such Pretty Silver Hair!

Quoting Yura of the Hair: "Oh! Such pretty silver Hair! I must have it!"

I've got to say the first thing you notice about this guy is most definitely his hair. Why? Well the fact that it sweeps his ankles for one thing, I mean, how many guys to you see with 60 inches of hair? Or for that matter, how many girls do you see with hair that long? Not many!

Now, not knowing how tall he is, it is a bit difficult to say exactly how long his hair is, however knowing that his hair comes to about 6 inches above his ankles (nearly to the ground!) and assuming that his is 5'7" - 5'9" (he is very tall for a Japanese man, and stands 2 or 4 inches taller than any of the other characters in the series), we can come to a rough estimate of the fact that his hair is approximately a whopping 60 inches long!

To realize just how long 60" of hair is, consider this: when you see a woman with long hair, usually her hair will be 15 - 18 inches long, or falling to just above her elbows. Lord Sesshomaru's hair reaches down to his ankles and nearly sweeps the ground as he walks. This guy has got a lot of pretty silver hair to manage. Speaking as a woman with 20-inch long hair myself, I can tell you, that it takes a lot of care to manage long hair, and the longer it gets, the harder it is to care for.

Here is something to consider: Lord Sesshomaru is a warrior. He fights battles. He is a demon who can fly. He does a lot of flying. He does a lot of fighting. He does a lot of flying while he's fighting. All that jumping around in battle and than all that flying around in clouds (and clouds are humid), is complete and utter total murder on your hair, and yet, this guy has got the shiniest, smoothest, most perfect, silky smooth, untangled glossy hair the world has ever seen!

Lord Sesshomaru the Silver Haired Demon

There's only one answer to this: this guy spends A LOT of time combing, brushing, washing, and over all fussing over those lovely silver locks of his, and when I say a lot, I mean a lot, we're talking 4 or 5 hours a day here.

Sure, we don't see that in the show or in the books, that'd be boring, but think about it: we do see him standing there bored out of his mind, twiddling with his hair, while he rolls his eyes to sky as he listens to InuYasha yelling at him.

We have seen him flick his hair in a very Cher-like manner, just before pulling out his sword, choping everyone up, flicking his hair again, puting his sword away, and than walking away like nothing happened.

Uhm . . . o . . . k . . . so . . . how many other warriors in the show (or any other show), do you see taking the time to stop and flick their hair between chopping people up? None, Sesshy is the only one who does that.

And let's take this notion one step farther. Who here is a major fan of his? All hands raised? Good. Now I ask you, which one of you doesn't know what a pompous peacock he is? Oh I know, fan girls don't want to admit it, but come on, just listen to how this guy talks! I mean, he not only is the best looking most powerful demon, he knows it and he'll tell you so while stomping you into the ground, because you are so far below his social standing. How many times have we heard him complain about half-breeds and low-lifes and his favorite phrase: "pathetic humans"? The first time we ever see him, he's commenting on what a waste of his time it is to bother with anyone below him. This guy thinks way too much of himself, which ultimately becomes his downfall and results in the death of the only person he ever did care about. (But that's another story which I have already devoted an entire lens too.)

Well, knowing how vain and smug he is to begin with and than combining that, with the fact that he's got this mega-long ultra perfect hair . . . that sure spins a new light on his already undying vanity! Lord Sesshomaru's hair is just yet another sign, in a long row of other signs, that this guy has a major vanity problem, but does is that alone enough to make him a cross dresser? Granted he's got mega long hair, but there are a lot of long haired men around.

Here's that "other lens" I mentioned:

Even Demons Look Good in Guyliner!

Reason # 2: Guyliner

Guyliner: The art of guys wearing eyeliner.

Never let it be said I do not like guys in eyeliner. I think all of my favorite guys wear eyeliner, I can't think of a single one who doesn't, and Sesshy is no exception. The guy not only wears eyeliner, he also wears pretty pink eyeshadow too.

Ignoring the Youkai markings he was born with (blue crescent moon on his forehead and purple stripes on his cheeks and wrists), this guy is wearing makeup. I've only noticed three men in the InuYasha series who wear eyeliner and eyeshadow: Naraku, Jakotsu, and Lord Sesshomaru. Naraku wears blue, Jakotsu wears purple, and Lord Sesshomaru wears a shocking shade of neon pink.

Once again, alone, wearing eyeliner does not make a guy a cross dresser, however, when combined with all the other elements, it certainly makes our Lord Sesshomaru look like he is.

Oh, and Jakotsu, btw, for those who know the series but are now asking which character this is, is the cross dressing younger brother of the Band of Seven, the "girl" wearing the pink furisode kimono, and carrying that crazy snake like sword.

Lord Sesshomaru and the Tang Dynasty

A Deeper Look at Sesshomaru's Make Up

Lord Sesshomaru's make up, while it may seem a bit outlandish today, was at one time rather fashionable and a very real style worn by women every day. Note here, that men did not wear this style make-up, only women did.

Lord Sesshomaru's make-up comes from the Tang Dynasty of China (circa 627 - 907). Women of the Tang Dynasty wore elaborate facial make up. They started out by powdering their faces white.

On their foreheads were painted crescent moons or flower petals. These crescents were made out of feathers, seashells, fish bones, pure gold, or painted on dye. This was called Shouyang or Plum Blossom Make-Up.

At the sides of their eyes were painted red stripes, extending to the cheeks. This was called Morning Sun Make Up because the stripes were the color of a rose sunrise. This type of make up was done by women who sought to mimic the look of Xue Yelai, Emperor Coa Pi's favorite imperial concubine, who had a red scar on her face.

It has already be determined that Sesshomaru lived in China during the 800's putting him in the Tang Dynasty at the height of this fashion. For more info on Lord Sesshomaru and historical accuracy see my essay here:

The Year's Best Dressed Demon

Reason # 3: Why Is He Wearing a Furisode?

The biggest thing that screams cross dresser about Lord Sesshomaru is the fact that he is wearing a Furisode. A Furisode for those not in the know, is a type of kimono worn ONLY by unmarried women.

When men wear a kimono, they wear a kosode or small sleeved kimono. No man in his right mind would even consider wearing a furisode or swing sleeved kimono. So tell me, why is Lord Sesshomaru wearing a Furisode with long swinging sleeves that rival his long hair in length? Only a cross dresser would wear a furisode.

Attacked by Monks

Reason #4: Wait, That's Women's Armor He's Got On!

If we were to look at the armor worn by Samurai men throughout history we see many styles, but never do we see any quite like the one worn by Lord Sesshomaru. Men going to battle wear huge armor. You don't have to watch the show for more than one or two episodes before you see samurai marching to battle. Take a good look at what they are wearing, than look at the armor Lord Sesshomaru wears. Did you you notice anything strange? Like, the fact that it doesn't look anything at all like the armor worn by the other samurai?

To find battle armor like Sesshy's, we have to look to Samurai women, who wore a "corseted" style breastplate, with a lotus petal skirt. Quite a few of these samurai women show up in the show. The first one we see is the samurai priestess who created the sacred jewel. Princess Abi of the Birds (see picture at right --->) wears armor almost a duplicate of Sesshomaru's, only difference is the color, and the shape of the shoulder plate. We see her show up in nearly 10 episodes. There are several different samurai women, warrior priestesses, and the nun turned demon, all of whom wear the same tight fitted, and long skirted battle armor we see Lord Sesshomaru wear.

One can not help but ask the question: If he is not a cross dresser, why than, is Lord Sesshomaru wearing women's battle armor?

The Lord of The Fluff

Reason #5: Oh So Fluffy!

And here it is: the reason Lord Sesshomaru attracts more oogle-eyed, love-struck, crazed fan girls than any other Bishie boy: that furry fluffy thing.

I once saw a fan created picture that quickly explained the fan girl obsession with Lord Sesshomaru. It was screen shot taken of Lord Sesshomaru while looking very fierce and was combined with a second screen shot of a woman "in love". Over this altered picture was the words: "Fear me, damn it!" followed by: "But you're so cute and fluffy!".

Women love furry things. Women love all things cute and cuddly. Women love all things soft and fluffy. Women go wild over men draped in fur boas. Wait, why is a man wearing a fur boa?

Of course those of you who only know Lord Sesshomaru from the TV show and not from the book, will be interested to know that while the show portrays him as a man wearing a 4 foot long fur boa, the book from which the show was based on, portrays him as a man with an 8 foot long tail which he drapes over his shoulder to keep it from dragging on the ground.

Also in the book, but not on the show, is the fact that he can only be mortally wounded if his tail is injured, which has happened twice resulting in his near death each time, again, not in the show, only in the book.

If you've never seen the difference between the skimpy boa of the show and the monstrously huge tail of the book, here's a picture from the book:

I got to say, the original book version of Sesshy is much better than the "edited" tv show version of him that came along seven years later.

Winner of the Fluffiest Demon Award

And What's With the "Mother Hen" Act?

Here we have Lord Sesshomaru, evil incarnate, son of the gate keeper to hell, a human-eating hell-hound in his true form, a villainous beast feared by everyone human and demons alike, and . . . with two small human children in tow? When questioned by other demons why he has these children, he can provide no answer and ignores the question. Outwardly he tells everyone he hates, reviles, and utterly despises humans. Yet, when ever Rin's life is threatened, we see him risk his own life to save her, often getting badly wounded as a result.

Perhaps there is nothing which raises more eyebrows or seems more out of place in the InuYasha series, than the close bonded relationship between Sesshomaru and Rin. Though he claims to love no one, he clearly loves Rin. In fact, there is no other pair in the story who has a bonding that can even compete with the bond between Sesshomaru and his beloved Rin. We see this bond between them shine even more clearly after Rin's death completely devastates Sesshomaru, causing him to give up his quest for the sword. (See my "Rin's Costume" lens, for a detailed look at their relationship and the story of her death.)

The first time his mother saw him with these children, her response was to ask if he had brought them along as a snack, and was than shocked to learn the Lord Sesshomaru no longer makes a habit of eating human children. Apparently it was something he did quite regular in the past.

In the TV show Lord Sesshomaru only has one child in his care: his dearly beloved Rin. In the book however, he has adopted two children, the little girl Rin and a little boy named Kohaku. Even in the book though, it is Rin whom Sesshomaru shows the most attention too.

His fierce protection of and utter devotion to these two human children, is probably the most shocking and out of place series of events in the entire InuYasha series. One that has opened up a whole world of debates. It is also an aspect that belongs here on this lens, as his tender loving care of these children, shows us yet another feminine side to this otherwise fierce bloodthirsty demon.

The Death of Rin

Feral Demons and Their Perception of Humans

There certainly is enough evidence to suggest that Lord Sesshomaru is indeed a cross dresser. However, if you know the show and the books very well, there are also indications that a demon's mind does not think as clearly as a human's. We are told more than once that a demon thinks rashly and acts of pure impulse, a fact that we see carried out with Lord Sesshomaru's many violent crimes, a few of which he later regretted, once he had had the time to think about what he was doing.

Can we assume than, that this irrational and impulsive behavior, is seen not only in his treatment of others, but also in his mode of dress as well? There is a high likelihood, he is not even aware of the fact that he is wearing cloths normally worn by women.

It must be remembered too, that when we see Lord Sesshomaru in his humanoid form, what we are actually seeing is an illusion. Lord Sesshomaru is a shape shifter. His true form is that of a giant white dog. His humanoid form is one that he originally took on in order to allow himself to get close enough to human children to be able to capture and eat them. His human form is thus an illusion, you are only seeing what he has chosen to allow you to see. Since his original intention was to lure children to him, it stands to reason that he would have chosen a more feminine humanoid form. Children are more likely to trust a female or motherly figure, than a male. This fact would than weigh heavy in his choice of what to look like.

Sesshomaru is considered to be a feral demon, as opposed to a domesticated demon, such as InuYasha, Shippo, or Kirara. A feral demon is one that was raised in the wilds, among other demons, with very little, if any contact with humans. On the other hand, a domestic demon is one that was raised among humans and thus neither fears nor threatens them.

Because of their rearing, feral demons have a tendency to fear humans and more often than not, alleviate that fear, by slaughtering and eating as many humans as they possibly can. These demons often use illusions and trickery to lure humans to them. One of the most common illusions used by feral demons, is to transform themselves into an alluringly beautiful human. As a general rule, the more beautiful the human transformation is, the more deadly the demon behind it.

Another factor that must be considered here, is that male dogs by nature are better raised and handled by female humans. They are more loyal to female owners, less aggressive with female trainers, and more open to being petted by female strangers. Male dogs are often assigned female vets and nurses, based on the fact that scientific studies show that male dogs are simple more receptive to and less fearful of female humans. Now, taking this bit of information, we look once again at Lord Sesshomaru and his true form verses his illusionary humanoid form.

In his true feral form, Lord Sesshomaru is in fact a giant white dog. When asking if Lord Sesshomaru is a cross dresser, we must take into consideration, the fact that he is a feral demon casting an illusion. He is not a human, nor does he look human in his natural form and, with the exception of Rin and Kohaku, he has had very little actual contact with humans at all. He is a male dog, and a very aggressive one at that. In distancing himself from humans, he has never had enough contact with any of them to really take much notice as to who is wearing what. We can thus take this fact and ask, is he trying to look very feminine or does he just not know the difference between male and female humans, and like any other aggressive male dog feels less threatened by female humans and thus chose the form which he himself was the most attracted to and less threatened by, with out any regard to the fact that he a male now appeared to look very female?

Is Lord Sesshomaru a Crossdresser?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

Yes.

Datenshi says:

he is a crossdresser he just doesn't know it or doesn't care. but InuYasha also has long hair and looks like a girl in human form. and i know a few people with long hair like sesshy. and most are men an you'r opinion on what is consider as long hair is diff from mine as my hair almost pass my butt.

Unroll says:

I'm going to half agree with Daquri about the Furisode. I have yet to see an image of Sesshomaru with sleeves long enough to be furisode. He's wearing a womens kimono, I believe, just not Furisode. There's a difference. However, the volume of the hakama he wears suggests that there is more in there than just empty space, and I know for a fact that long Kimono can fit into hakama pants - especially gathered ones.

Daquri says:

The furisode idea isn't right. First of all, furiside are a lot more intricately designed, Sesshoumaru only has minor simple edge designs. Second of all the furisode is also strictly a kimono. There's no way that a kimono would fit in the hakama he has on. I'll grant you the sleeves are really too long for a male to wear, but it is NOT a furisode.

Bob says:

Yup.

Alexander says:

While this is interesting, I do have have to comment on the 'eyeliner/make-up' segment. I've never heard anyone (nor seen anything) to imply that it is make-up. Considering that the markings on his face are clearly not (as evidenced by they're changing when he gets angry and showing up on Inuyasha when his demon side is in control) I would think that they are merely natural facial markings and that is, so far as I've seen, the common belief. This idea is corroborated (and extended to, at least, the crescent) by the fact that these marking show when he transforms into the dog form whereas if they were make-up it would be reasonable to assume that they would not show through the fur as they would be applied to the (covered) skin.
As for the crossdresser statement, an examination of his clothing in the light of historical fashions would be more than enough to show that. Not all crossdressers wear make-up or have long hair.

Anon E. Mousse says:

It's funny, really. He's a transvestite and yet it works for him somehow. (I mean, even Jakotsu's more feminine than he is.)

The outfit contrasts with the deep, scary voice in the Japanese dub. It's very hard to poke fun at a cross-dresser who suddenly grew an arm attached to an extremely powerful sword that can disintegrate you with one touch. Heh.

I don't think he's gay, per se; perhaps he's just androgynous [and just a bit asexual.]

And there you have it: Lord Fluffers, the big, scary white transvestite dog.

Kelsey says:

Surprisingly, I'm okay with it.

Sesshomaru says:

I Lord Sesshomaru took that form as an illusion to trick to lure humans. But you got to admit, only I Lord Sesshomaru can pull it off as being a crossdresser and still look good!

wredfg says:

adsssjxd

Modeler says:

OK now i'm gonna get this straight: Now that i've red your research i think it's LOGICAL that he is a crossdresser and for people who tells me that he only flips his hair once then there IS a good reason. The reason is beacause Inuyasha cut off the arm he used to flip his hair with. Now the question is Not if he's gay or not because he never shows any interest in none of the gender in the show(and please don't fucking tell me that he has a crush for the brat named rin nor for the bitch named Kagura and even fo that devilish man named Naraku).End of the argument.

GabbyGrapist says:

I think it's pretty clear that he is a cross dresser. It's more like 'does he know or even care that he is?' Like you pointed out, being raised away from humans he probably hadn't given much thought that his dress was that of the female persuasion. haha.

Jinja says:

I really think that he is a crossdresser now that i have red your lens and stuff...

Truthtalker says:

Yes the guy is a cross-dresser and that he is gay.Lol(I was s happy when Kagura died)

Meta says:

He's wearing women's clothing. End of argument. The question isn't "is he gay?" which would be hard to prove or disprove since he seems to show no interest in either gender or any sort of relationship of that nature anyways. The question is "Does Sesshomaru wear women's clothes?"

Yes. He does. To all those saying no... get over it. Yes, it's more stylish but it's still women's clothing. If the Fonze walked around in a sunflower dress he too would be a cross-dresser.

Kouki says:

After reading your archives i think that the fact that Rumiko changed Sesshomarufrom woman to man makes him gay and a cross-dresser.And by the way i'm 100 percent content of your research and very happy you shared them because itmade my day.And by the way some people say it's only his human form is feminine but it's not the case at all since the way he flips his hair, turns back then walk away, hair swinging are very girly.

YOUR MOM says:

OF COARSE HE IS A CROSSDRESSER !!!!! WHAT ELSE WILL HE DO WITH HIS TIME!!!!! HE SPENDS ALL HIS TIME IN THE BATHROOM!!!!!! WHEN I WANT TO CUDDLE HE IS DOIN' HIS FUCKIN' HAIR AND MAKE UP !!! IT PISSES ME OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I DO LIKE HIS SKILL..............IN BED!!!!!!!!!!!! SO I SAY FUCK YESH!!!!

Sesshomaru's Mother says:

Pssh. I always new he was gay. . .

Kagome says:

yup..he is
infact,he also has that "feminine look" which sesshy shows in that "sesshy-His true form vs. the illusion" pic
and fucking yes,he's the ONLY demon who's a female next to naruto and sasuke

Naruku says:

FUCK YES HE IS A CROSSDRESSER!!!!!!!!! YOU SHOULD KNOW THIS BY NOW!!!! HE WOULDN'T HAVE SUCH LONG HAIR!!!!! AND HE WOULDN'T WARE MAKE-UP!!!!!!!!!!!! DUMB ASS!!! JUST KIDDING!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jaken + Rin agree says:

yes...

Lord Sesshomaru Lord Of The Fluff says:

I am a cross dresser to solve this damn argument ......... and I'm gay......... deal with it .............. you are retarded if you think I'm not Lord Sesshomaru !LORD OF THE FLUFF!!!!!!!!!!!! you should meet me in real life............ I stole Kagome's computer and had Inuyasha help me figure out these damn keys........ it was hell.... well I'm gonna play with Rin now......bye bye!!!!!

INUYASHA says:

IM ON SANGOS SIDE!!!!!! HE WARES GUYLINER, GUYSHADOW, GIRL ARMOR, HE'S LOD OF THE FLUF, AND HE IS OBSESSED OVER HIS HAIR! SANGO IS RIGHT NEXT TO ME AND SHE AGREES!!!!!!!!!!! BUT I WANT TO PET HIS FLUF-FLUF!!!!

SANGO says:

YES HE IS
GUYLINER PLUS GUY SHADOW
GIRL ARMOR

Hillebulle says:

I think that Sesshomaru is something of an enigma. He probably is not aware that he is wearing female clothing and even if he is I don't think he would care since the only ones caring about it is "pathetic humans". But if I think back to Inuyasha volume 2 then I can see that he looks VERY much like a woman back then. My older brother actually didn't believe me when I told him the pretty person on the cover was a male. His argument was "but SHE has make-up!". Well anyway, I think you have created an amazing lens and I enjoyed reading both your theories and the facts from Rumiko Takahashi-sama.

turtlefire says:

Crossdresser by nature. I think he chose whatever looks good on him!

Rainny says:

I say yes... love him though

Brokeback Mountain Cowboy says:

I think he's gay.

liz says:

hes obviously a cross dresser, however you assume WAY too much when you are writing all of this. also Rumiko has said it herself she doesnt care in the slightest for historical accuracy. O and the movies are pretty much just fanfics since rumiko didnt write them. Good luck

Sarah says:

well ya but it all depends if that if it was a big deal back then like being a half breed back then could mean you being killed or a angry mob coming after you becaues you were being polite and picked up a doll for a girl of accidently droped it and all hell broke loss

desi says:

maybe but once you look at all the considefations you may think a little more differently

NIEKYA says:

uch sesshomaru . . . .cute abiezZzZzZZZZZZZ

Jen says:

I like your theories behind the feminine garb, but it might interest you to know that according to Rumiko Takahashi, the mokomoko is actually a parasitic demon - apparently it's in some kind of symbiosis with Sesshoumaru.

Saraste says:

Yes, kinda. Though I disagree on the idea of his humanoid form being only an illusion as my perception of shapeshifting is a bit different. But your points on make-up and his female garb are very factual and interesting. Wish I had his hair. XD

Also, I do not see what you mean by saying 'the fluffy' is Sesshoumaru's tail. I've never seen it as that...

Anita says:

Well, I always thought he looked girly, along with 12 billion other guys in anime, but given all the points in this essay, I'm gonna have to say that yes, Sesshomaru is a crossdresser. He may not know it, seeing as he doesn't know very much about humans in general, but he is wearing female clothing constantly. That makes him a crossdresser.

Mikaela says:

Omg, yes. I'm loving you right now for you in depth essays with these historical facts.

Marla says:

I think he is a crossdresser... but he is a hot one. I don't like him for his boa though, I think he is hot without it.
Yes... you can say I'm pathetic -^ ^-... but I am what I am.

spirituality says:

Doesn't seem to need the dresses to look female - you've got me convinced.

nessiee says:

I never thought of him as a girl, or a crossdresser, but now that you mention it, I can totally see it! That's very funny and some excellent observations you've made there!

Rock_The_Ice says:

Yes. And if he gets any more chest muscle I will have to say he has breasts! =]

enslavedbyfaeries says:

Being newly introduced to this Sesshy character, I would have to say yes and a pretty darn good one too. (I would have guessed him for a chick!)

No.

sesshomarulove says:

lord Sesshomaru isn't a cross-dresser, so what if his sleeves are long so are Inuyasha's on the robe of the fire rat. his "make-up is part of his birth mars nothing more. and his caring for Rin isn't a mother hen act, its more of a father thing and so what if he's like that.

mist says:

No so shut the dick up he's just a man who can only wear womens clothing and for your information that bitch inuyasha wears almost the same shit

Sessarie says:

Im leaning towards the "no" side. The red "eyeshadow" on his eyes are part of his birthmarks ( like the moon and red marks on his cheeks). Dont reallly care if hes a crossdresser or vain. He is still upppper hotttt! And thats all it matters.

The Dog King says:

I don't know if he was a crossdresser but I do know that he wasn't a women. Here is why, Sesshomaru didn't like anything and he even wanted to kill his own father, but when he met Rin he liked her, and Sesshomaru is full demon and to use Tessaiga you have to be able to care about humans lke their father and he didn't and Inuyasha was half demon so the sword was destined ot him. The sword of life was given to Sesshomaru to teach him how to care for humans so that is why he got the sword of life and not Tessaiga.

Kendrix says:

...Seriously? You're SERIOUSLY considering this?
*sigh* Its a drawing-style thing that is very common in Anime; Tough there are a few prominent exceptions because of personal taste of the varying authors, the standart way to portray a male as good-looking is to draw him in a style that americans might consider girly-looking. It might be rooted in a different idea of manliness (which might also explain why the japanese fans are usually okay with male characters that Americans will wildly hate for being "whiny") but its mainly just a drawing-style convention of sorts. As for the drawing style differences in the anime/manga, note that there's a gradual change in the manga itself; Compare a drawing of Kikyo or Sesshomaru from the early manga with one of the later ones, and you'll note that the Anime was probably based off the most recent versions at the time that it came out.
As for his outfit, it's more likely that the author just simply put him into something vaguely aristocratic-looking without bothering to check if it's 100% historically accurate. I mean, no one minded Kagome's miniskirt either, and it IS a fantasy story. Also, he's a demon, demons might simply have a less strict dress code XD I mean, throghout the show, we meet a few antagonists who are clearly supposed to be effeminate/Jakotsu was outright gay, and look how they were handled; It was made VERY BLATANT in their looks and mannerisms that they were supposed to be cross-dressing. And they were given girly voices.
None of that pops up in Sesshomaru's portrayal.(He has a very deep-sounding voice which is, as far as I know , considered a very manly thing over there.) If he was supposed to look like a girl, wouldn't his ever-respectless brother point it out to insult him?
Most men in the story have long hair (Even Inuyasha who's pretty much your old-school male), especially the not-quite-human ones. It is a staple of fantasy or fiction in general to give men long hair to make them look otherwordly and romanticised, wild or otherwise not-ordinary without any implication of feminity. Heck, even women are given super-long hair (As in, waist-leght and more) to make them look otherwordly This is usually done without considering that you'd need one bottle of shampoo and conditioner every day to keep that in that state, because that sort of character is usually considered "above" anything resembling everyday life anyway.
As for the fluff thing, well, didn't real life noblemen wear accessories like that? Or maybe its supposed to be some leftover from his demon form/ mark him as not human while still looking stylish - just like Koga's and Shippo's tails or Inuyasha's dog ears. There's no reason to assume that his animalic leftover is any different from theirs just because the fangirls fuss about it. As for the armor, I think I've read someone pointing out that it might be supposed to look chinese-ish. (And thus not like a samurai armor)Also, all the Sichinintai had armor like that, not just Jakotsu. Renkotsu and suikotsu don't seem to be intended to look girly to me, and Bankotsu was clearly intended to come off as manly.
Also, do only women ever take care of children? It takes two people to make and raise a kid, and usually, only one of them female. (unless lesbians are involved) there ARE things like father-, big brother- and general protector's instinct. Look at him, he is a distant protector's figure who teaches the kids to do stuff themselves ("Rin, go search yourself a snack! Jaken, babysit her.") and is warmly welcomed back whenever he returns. That's more of a fatherly thing there, a mother figure would be more outright nurturing. Us chicks are in fact genetically hardwired to find guys who take care of little kids hot which probably contributed to Sesshys popularity with em fangirls.
And the so called "eyeshadow"... well, actually, a lot of humanoid demons have those, if you pay attention... it's probably either a drawing-style thing or just another facial marking.

theimplier says:

well all in all he is a great demon that inherited the land there on from his father after his demise, and his father was considered a guardian phantom more than a demon so its only fitting that Sesshomaru feels like he should step in to the role of his father. if you take into account that when he makes a true appearance in the series he only attacks humans when they make the first move. they provoke him. and with his multiple battles for the tetsiuga with inuyasha he could of just killed kagome and the others from the start and put inuyasha into an emotional state of dis-pare to end it quickly. and with his tail disguised as boa the outfit fits perfectly with it to prevent a weakness from actually being visible the public.
as for his hair HE IS A DEMON his demonic aura is what repaired his armor after inuyasha broke it so chances are that it keeps the hair in line as well.
as for the kids,Rin found him after his first battle with inuyasha. he tried to scare her but she only flinched for a sec then continued forward toward him. she had brought him food as well even when she stole it and was beaten by the villagers. Kohaku ended up with him because of him not wanting RIn to thank poorly of him. Kohaku also had one of the last shards with him so Sesshomaru took that as an advantage to lure Naraku out of hiding.

okay make up no one cares about because it makes him look to dam dam dam SEXY and im a boy (not gay i have a girlfriend). tell me any women who sees that doesn't want to rack that body.

kamaru19 says:

well i think it's just a demon thing sesshomaru's father has almost the same outfit though compared to his father he is on the more girly side or his face is.goo

Fluffy is cool says:

Who cares? He's Fluffy and I will eat him because he's so hot

srawrr says:

Although there was many good points, and it was entertaining to read, do you really think demon as powerful and aparently heartless (With the exception of Rin, and possibly Kagura, of course) would be a crossdresser? Although his 'top' has swinging sleeves, and resembles a furisode, it resembles a Haori more, if you ask me, as Lord Sesshomaru also wears Hakama pants. If it was a furisode, he most likely would not as it is a 'dress'. His mokomoko is a status, if you will, as his rank as a Inu Daiyoukai lord. His father had one that was similar to Sesshomarus but had two extensions instead of one. Also, although it is never seen in the anime or books, in the second ending I believe, Sesshomaru is seen flying by the moon on what looks like a mokomoko as well.
When you really think about it, Sesshomaru's outfit just looks expensive, and he has a confident attitude. Therefore, I believe Lord Sesshomaru is not a crossdresser.

asdpepepe says:

...hm. Good arguments but a lot of assumptions. Some of the points are based on exaggerated evidence and assumptions. I don't know, I'm just not really convinced. But cool article anyhow :)

Kuchikiwraith says:

From what I understand, the markings on Sesshomaru's face are not makeup, but something like birthmarks. It has something to do with his status as a demon, and if you have seen the final arc of Inuyasha, you'll see that his unnamed mother has similar ones.
His armor- I read somewhere that it's not influenced by samurai (men or women) at all, but a 'Western' (Chinese) style.
the Fluffy- I read in an offical art book from rumiko takahashi that it is part of him, though i don't know if it is his tail. I assume so, and write it as such in fanfiction. anyway, in the art book, Rumiko said when she first drew sesshomaru she never intended for the fluffy to by so... fluffy. it was ment to look more like Koga's tail in terms of volume.

Zaynab. says:

Lord Sesshoumaru's "eyeliner" are birthmarks his parents had. The crescent moon on his forehead is from his mother's side and the stripes are from his father. The feudal era clothes he wears were worn by men. I saw a pair similar to Lord Sesshoumaru's clothing on display in Lebanon. That is indeed feudal era attire.
It's not a "Mother hen" , but a Father-like protection for Rin. Lord Sesshoumaru's father asked him "Do you have someone to protect" that is one of the requirements to wielding Tensaiga and Tetsusaiga. To wield Tetsusaiga, a demon must show a need to protect a human (like Inuyasha did in episode 7). To wield Tensaiga the wielder must possess a compassionate heart (Rin) and know the loss of life (Kagura). Only when Lord Sesshoumaru show these signs did Totosai forge Tensaiga into a double-edged blade (to kill and resurrect).
The Armour Lord Sesshoumaru wore is similar to his fathers (in the Sword of an Honorable Ruler). The reason Lord Sesshoumaru does not need a great deal of armour is because he is a full-blooded yokai and easily heals from wounds--unless his tail is injured.
Lord Sesshoumaru's pride is typical of an aristocrat who think they're superior than commoners (or morals and half-breeds). Lord Sesshoumaru often can't forgive Inuyasha for having "tainted blood". Much like blue-blooded royalty anyone who does not come from a pure royal line (from a commoner parent) is looked down upon, unlike today's standards.
Kohaku is under Lord Sesshoumaru's wing, because Kohaku possesses one of the last jewel fragments Naraku needs to complete the Shikon Jewel. Lord Sesshoumaru knows with Kohaku tagging along Naraku will surely follow his trail.

Eisen says:

I have to say he is not, first being, that is not a furisode. The sleeves are not pronounced enough for it to be furisode. I have no argument what-so-ever against the hair, I always figured he kept it long because all the human male fashions in InuYasha were short or top knots. His armor is not that of a woman samurai either, one, it lacks any kind of support that would normally be required of a woman's armor. His armor appears (and I have a bit of experiece since I am an archaeologist who's fortei is armor and weapons of the feudal era.) to be that of an archer, scout, or messenger, except it is much fancier. Best comparison I can come up with, is Koga's armor. Koga's is more for battle use, while Sesshomaru's is more fanciful. Hence also while he has a lot more color on his kimono and other accessories. Sesshomaru probably doesn't feel like he needs to have any over bearing amount of armor (he's strong enough without it) and he wants to show that he is above everyone else (hence, the colorful kimono and accessories) That is just my thinking though, I say think whatever you want to think.

Sarah says:

Not quite. "Crossdresser" is just a man dressing like a woman. I've been feeling more like Sesshomaru is transgendered. This is mainly because he's constantly referring to himself as "this Sesshomaru" instead of using a gender-specific word to refer to himself. I'm still toying with the idea, though; so I'm not 100% on this. Still don't think he's a full-blown cross-dresser, though.

Why does it work tho? says:

I always thaught that the eyeshadow was part of his markings. The hair part made me laugh now we know what he's doing when we don't see him for episodes at a time XD. He's a crossdresser but doesn't know it lol and yet it works too bad if you transfered it to real life he'd just look stupid as is the case with most anime charecters.

R@cheL says:

It never hit me to think of the lovely Sesshy as a cross dresser... Until now! But reading all of this thoroughly I do daresay... Nope, Sessh is not a cross dresser. After all, take in the fact that he was pretty much raised by demons around demons. So he couldn't have known his fancy style was more feminine than masculine! Or, as mentioned above, was chosen for a kind of 'Child Radar', a motherly form to run to, only to get eaten.

tina says:

no i dnt think he is a cross dresser he is a demon so all that make up might be birth mark as the moon and strips on his face and i dought demon hair is anything like human hair. i love the feminine look he gives off it gives him the royal high class look which is exactly what he is, which can explain his snotty personality, although he definintly portrated as a pretty boy which would explain why he is mostly voted the most sexiest character in the show!

Fluffy! says:

Plus that eyeliner could also be his birth thingies. his mom and da had it.

Fluffy! says:

No! He's a demon goddammit! Demons wear different clothing that's all.

fluffylover says:

he is so NOT a cross-dress! the mascara and eyeshadow are both birth marks. gess like his dad had. duuuhhh. (i mean you people are insane)

inutaisha143 says:

he is NOT a cross-dresser! Sesshy is to awsome and to amazing to be one! The eyeshadow ISN"T eyeshadow its marking that he was born with, same with his dad! The mascara is marking too! (this is killing me... Whats the book called that he's in before inuyasha even comes out?)

Saraih says:

NO master sesshomaru is not a crossdresser he's not wearing wemons armor and just because he's wearing guyliner doesn't mean he's a crossdresser like back then in persia the king wore eyeliner and that was fine and not considered a crossdresser and because he have long lushes hair also don't mean it inuyasha, naraku and koga have long hair so are they crossdressers? and naraku have eyeliner on is he a crossdresser? if he's not a crossdresser your a hypocite

SESSHLUVR says:

i say ya need to knock it off already!!!! he's a 2-dimentional man for crying out loud! he's just an anime guy! who cares if he's dressed wierd,. . .give it up!!! (also the 'mascara and eyeshadow'. . . .IS PART OF HIS BODY!!! HE WAS BORN WITH THAT STUFF TOO HON'!!

Juxtapose says:

I would have to say no. The length of hair is meaningless, as you said, it is more or less an illusion. If I could just make myself look any particular way would I have 60 inch silver hair? Heck ya. Now, for the female clothing, as was stated in the paragraphs above it would make sense for hunting, when your prey are small children, but, generally female clothing is much more stylish, and as such for a vain entity, why not? After all, he isn't human, so does it really matter which human clothes he wears? When the worry is looking good, the gender the clothing is for matters a little less, especially considering it would only be humans to try to state the cross-dresser deal. As for the armor, I think it would more be merely a representation of his martial ability than for protection. It is an illusion as stated, and as such what does it matter if the illusion is of full armor, or the armor he has? Consider again that many of human likenesses he would have seen, would be demons that can assume the form of females, consider he would pay attention to another demon rather than an actual human, this could have had a subconscious effect in his choice of dress. Next thing to consider, there are some men who dress in female clothing everyday, and are not really considered cross-dressers. From the glam-rock days, to the emo, scene, and indie fashion areas. Does fitting into one of those categories make you cross dresser? Not necessarily. There are many things to consider.

Jane Doe :P says:

Sesshomaru doesnt try to cross dress like other characters we know. Personally I think he just doesnt care what people think. maybe he just wants people to think something bad about him so they try to pick a fight.....maybe we shouldnt obsess over things like that and pay attention to the fact that no matter what he wears he's amazingly handsome.

Cerulean Flame says:

In the Inuyasha series, he is the male with the longest hair, and, if I know hair, it would totally get in your face, mine annoys me on my neck sometimes. If the humanoid form is also truly what he would look like as a human, you must remember that he has long fur, hence the long hair. Also, if the humanoid form is truly an illusion, then illusions don't need to be taken care of, do they? Besides, Rin would have a ball doing it for him.

And yes, Kurama from Yu Yu Hakusho is probably most known for his feminine way of acting, flipping his hair, and taking his rose for his renowned attack "Rose Whip" from the back of his hair, probably somewhere by the neck.

And besides, this is an ANIME!! The maitenance of the hair is not necessarily a key point. Maybe the author just had a vision, and made it so.

And yes, maybe he wears feminine clothing, but he looks masculine in them, at least to me, so what does it matter? I was never one of those people who thought he was a girl, I saw both Kurama and Sesshomaru as male upon entry.

And his "guyliner" is totally there from birth. It matches his markings, they're all in the same pallet of colors, I think those are just markings.

Tim the Enchanter says:

First, he's not the only anime guy who flips his hair around before a fight. Kurama from Yu Yu Hakusho does, too, but again, he's pretty girly, too. (But I love him anyway <3)
Second, maybe his hair's just naturally that easy to take care of?
Third, I don't think that's makeup he's wearing. Don't demons sometimes have weird markings like that?
Fourth, he likes Rin because he likes Rin. Rin is just awesome. Period.

Sa-chan says:

Well, if he were wearing furisode in a *modern* woman's style, then his collar would dip much lower in the back--this is one of my primary frustrations when wearing my furisode: my collar constantly creeps up. It seems more likely that he would be wearing some sort of sokutai or kariginu, which also had large and unusually wide flowing sleeves, but were ancient, aristocratic men's garments. (When out of his armor, Gackt as Uesugi Kenshin wore these types of kimono with enormous sleeves throughout Fuurin Kazan--it was the mark of a medieval nobleman to have sleeves that large.) The fact that they are sewn up at the front suggests that his outfit may have been from the transition from osode to kosode sleeve styles ('kosode' refers to the size of the opening of the sleeve, not the overall sleeve length; 'osode' sleeves are completely open in the front, like Inuyasha's). His sleeves also do not seem to have the very generously curved corner indicative of a young person's furisode--though he hardly ever stands still long enough to examine his sleeve corners, they do not seem to be extremely rounded. If the corners are sharp, that generally indicates an adult man's kimono. (Curved sleeve corners indicate youth, so young boys' and girls' kimono both have curved sleeve corners. Adult women's kimono have less rounded corners; my tomesode have just the tiniest bit of curve to the corner, indicating a married adult woman, who is much closer to a man in social standing than a child.)

Also, aristocratic youths of all ages wore furisode-style kimono--young aristocratic boys would likely have formally switched to adult-styled kimono at their genpuku, or even persisted until about their 18th birthday, but until then, would have been dressed in younger fashions, which included (and still include) furisode-length sleeves as a unisex style--even my modern day (late Showa to Heisei, I would guess) young boy's kimono has enormous furisode-style sleeves, for instance, and the kimono worn by young boys for Shichi-Go-San features furisode-style sleeves. Example: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jamesalexanderjack/3741583662/

More information on medieval men's furisode:
http://www.rekihaku.ac.jp/english/events/publication/rekihaku_137wi.html

For a man to be dressed in such a manner suggests aristocratic background--high class daimyo wore kimono with very generous sleeves as a way of showing their social class. Shorter sleeves are practical, but long, broad sleeves suggests a life of power, money and social superiority; if you had sleeves that size, you had people to do menial tasks for you. Only peasants needed /practical/ clothing.

We're making the mistake of judging his appearance based on modern fashion (in the case of his hair and make-up, both of which were common on aristocratic Japanese men of the past) and modern kimono rules, which are very formalized. Kimono were living garments in ancient Japan, with more fluid rules and hundreds of varieties, including young men's furisode.

Fangirl =) says:

All Bishounens are feminine. It's just how Japanese women view bishies as.

kyubii the nightmare says:

i belive more in the idea that he takes that form for the hunting of children and never switched when he stoped

Sayuri says:

c'mon, he doesn't even bother to talk. why should he bother to cut his hair?? that's not make-up, they're permanent marks of his body. when inuyasha turns into a demon the marks appears in his face too. inu-taisho had face marks, and also sesshomaru's mother. Inuyasha's hair is also long, not that long, but that's because Inuyasha is younger than sesshomaru. so sesshomaru had much more time to grow his hair. inu-taisho's armour also look like sesshomaru's. they're both crossdressers? if sesshomaru was a girl ¿why did Kagura liked him? ¿is she a lesbian? my god... and i don't see the point of the way he protects Rin. Inuyasha protects Kagome, Miroku protects sango, my boyfriend protects me. thats what we do for love. he just love her. really, this is a bad way to waste your time. and the fluff, if you really ar an inuyasha's manga reader you'll know that Rumiko takahashi explained in the character's book that the fluf it's a part of sesshomaru's body, so, he HAS to carry it with him. he's that atractive because he's atractive. that's all. you don't see an handsome guy in the streets and thinks: a crossdresser. that's all. i'm a Sesshomaru fan.

Seehomarulover <3 says:

I really dont think he is so he is a little girly looking but he really isnt girly looking his hair and eyes but the few times we see his body they are very manly so......... : ] he is just better than everyone he doesnt need to explain lol!!

I belong to Lord Sesshomaru says:

No the markings on his face that people call make up is mearly that, markings. Those are the markings of a full blooded dog demon. He has various other markings all over his body. The long hair hell I like it it make's him look amazingly attractive. Personally I believe he is not a cross dresser in any way... But that's my opinion

sessy my love says:

no way he might not know is dressing like a girl and i really think he was born with the make up and stuff and the hair the hair make him look way to sexy so and the personilly he has is noway a girl form

Miharu says:

HELLZ NO! He is a demon, not human. Meaning he doesn't follow human customs. And I love him with the damn pampered attitude. The boad makes him look sexy, and his hair makes him hotter than 800 degrees C!!!

Samantha says:

Wouldn't a crossdresser mean he acts like a girl? I'm sorry but Sesshomaru is ALL MAN honey! Woot! xD

Ashley says:

You did all this research on an manga character? You need to get laid.

No says:

No... but I think he's gay. :3 I am also a fan of his

bluedolphin2011 says:

No....no! Your whole page is completly inaccurate
1. I'll give you the fact that he has long hair but he's only touched it once in the entire series (right before he transforms in his first apperance when he's talking to Inuyasha about humans). Inuyasha touches his hai way more than Sesshomaru does.
2. His 'guyliner' is part of his body. Look at his mother and his father who both have the same eyelids. It's genetic and a youkai thing. Also, he's from Japan, NOT CHINA. The fact that men wore eyeliner in China is irrevelent
3. Sweet heart...... he's not wearing a modern kimono. His outfit screams aristocrat for back in the Fudel era. Have you ever hear anyone in the series commenting on his wera? No. They comment on his pedigree and his fine clothes. Long tails on kimonos, big sleeves and fancy designs are SO high class.
4. His armor is NOTHING like a woman's. His is spiked and hravily paded much like ancient aromr.
5. The boa is a part of his body according to Takahashi. His father has 2.
6. When he revived Rin, she became his responsibility. That's why she sticks around. The fact that he grew on him is conincidental.
3.

Idii says:

If im going to play along then and assume that he is a real person and everything... Then its still no. Sesshoumaru is little *snit*, a snobby bitch-man, and just as misogynistic as everyone else from that time period. Women were basically worthless, especially in the eyes of the elite, and with Sesshoumaru being the most elite of all, he wouldn't Possibly look like a woman on purpose, or on accident. As far as he would be concerned, hes probably just wearing whatever he came upon. 'my giant manly costume was destroyed fighting that dragon yesterday, ill just take this stuff right here.'

...thats my imagine of him at least.

Kagura says:

I think his "make up" are tattoos like those on his wrists. AND Inuyasha wears long sleeve too...! Sesshomaru wouldn´t choose the look of a woman/ crossdresser, because he thinks they are weak.

I´m so Sesshaku´s opinion!

Sesshaku says:

He's a Demon, i dont think he wears make up or that he fix his hair, if he heals very quickly, he must have a perfect hair, and his "make up" are just strange think of his body (inutashio also has it).
About his cloth, Inuyasha also has long sleeves, i don't think rumiko cared about historical accuracy in human fashion (some of it arent even from japan) at the time of drawing A DEMON and just made special cloth for them, and also, his father wasnt gay and still had a very similiar armour. I think that Sesshoumaru cant be a concient cross dresser becouse he would seem it as a weekness (he hates jakotsu). Also the fact that Naraku and Inutashio has the same eyes "makeup" think makes me think that it just is something Rumiko did to his powerfull demons, may be to give some evil/power effect to the character.
About his relationship with Rin, thanks to her he learns to care about others, he just learn how to love someone else, if he killed humans in the past without no mercy, its clearly that he doesnt have a "mother spirit", for god sake, at the begging of the series he could kill 3000 Rin without even care about their names.
I dont think he is a cross dresser, i think hes a cold demon, whith no emotions and incapable of choosing to be a crossdresser.

Bridgetn94 says:

He isnt a CD haha - he is just a hot, sexy man ^_^ <3 him soooooo much

domiko says:

That isn't makeup.A lot of demons have marks on them like that.

Inuyasha-Episodes says:

Confusing, yes.
misunderstood, yes

vianeycr says:

i dont care what people say sesshomaru is a guy who is straight and who in the real world would be hot.

Ayame Kunizaki says:

No, I do not think he's a crossdresser in the slightest. Though you do have accurate evidence that he COULD be a crossdresser, I believe that the long hair, "makeup", and feminine appearence were just made to make him a more likable and confusing character. If we go with the argument of the long, flowy sleeves and beautiful, shiny hair, we must also take in the fact that InuYasha has both of those things, though not in so much proportion. He has both the long hair and the long sleeves. Also, I don't think he's wearing makeup. The two stripes on his cheels match the "eyeliner" around his eyes, so wouldn't it be safe to assume that his "makeup" is not in fact makeup, but more demon tattoos? His more feminine qualities only serve to make him a more deep character. This is because, for one thing, that it is contradictory in our minds that even though he is cruel and cold, he would have such qualities that make him so feminine. Obviously, once we watch even a few episodes with Lord Sesshoumaru in them, it is easy to see that he is far from feminine or a crossdresser, even though he might look like that at first glance. And, most people who have watched many animes can easily tell whether or not an anime character is a girl or a boy, no matter how long his/her hair. I had no trouble distinguishing him as a male the first time I saw him.

demonic angel says:

he is not a crossdresser havent you ever thought that his mom wanted a girl so she mad sesshomaru grow his hair so long and wear women cloths instead of boy cloths.

kigoinu says:

no doonthinnk so. he's kinda cool and cruel

alex says:

though your evidence is solid and valid, he can melt faces with his pinky finger. And as far as the "mother hen" thing goes, I find it being part of his "canine" instincts. That, and it makes a funny juxtaposition, seeing him have the same "weakness" his father had.

Bill says:

Going by headline:
Oh, Such Pretty Silver Hair!: Not only is your estimation of the length of his hair exaggerated; it does not reach his ankles, this much can be seen from all the pictures you pasted up there of him, it's not hard to see that nearly all of the characters (excluding those who are monks, who have shaved heads) have long hair. Sesshomaru's hair is long because there's no opportunity to cut it, and that shine that you speak of is probably all the grease built up in it. He probably doesn't bathe very often, given the complexity of the outfit he has to take off and put back on afterward.
Guyliner: Rules regarding make-up back then were not the same as they are now. Drawing attention to the eyes for intimidation purposes was a very common thing to do.
Lord Sesshomaru and the Tang Dynasty: I've read the other article, and I can't say there's one thing in it I can agree with. Lord S is not Chinese. Deal with it.
Why is He Wearing a Furisode?: I don't know. Why is he wearing hakama, trousers that are more commonly worn by MEN? There is nothing about Japanese dress that is strictly male or female garb. Certainly, some articles are more often worn by one sex or the other, but it doesn't mean anything. Sesshomaru's wearing of a furisode is the equivalent of a man in our time and culture wearing a pink shirt. People may look at him funny, but it doesn't mean that he's in anyway abnormal.
Wait, That's Women's Armor He's Got On!: There were so few women fighting back then (willing or allowed) that it's a pretty big stretch to assume that there's an entire classification of armor reserved strictly for females. In fact, I would think that women would not WANT to draw attention the fact that they were women if they were going out on a battlefield.
Oh, So Fluffy!: You do realize he's a dog, right? He's going to have fur.
And What's With the "Mother Hen" Act?: You're going to look at the way Rin and Sesshomaru interact, and tell me with a straight face that this is a "mother hen act"? He treats her more like a detached father than anything, the way he tells her to fend for herself and find her own food, not to mention the fact that the only time he truly interacts with her is when she's seriously in danger.
Feral Demons and Perception of Humans: This is the only thing I might have agreed with you on, if it sounded a little less condescending. Nowhere in the series does the demon come across as less cognitive than your average human. In fact, they sometimes come across as more so. They just enjoy killing each other and humans because their hierarchies are based on physical power rather than social networks.

Putting all of this aside, you obviously know very little about what it means to be a crossdresser, so let me clue you in. Crossdressers are more commonly heterosexual men who dress in women's garb, and they do so in secret. Jakotsu was not a crossdresser, but would probably fit more comfortably into the category of "gender queer", or a person trying to pass as the opposite gender in public, though even this is debatable, considering he quite vehemently hated women. It is possible that Sesshomaru is transgendered as well, but this is doubtful, considering he is very obviously male to all the other characters in the series. Never ONCE is he mistaken for female, even though the readers may do so all the time.
Given the ACTUAL definition for a crossdresser, it is more likely that MIROKU is one, than Sesshomaru.

Try again.

ashley says:

NO! for this reason, lord Sesshomaru lives 500 years in the past! people dress differently back then! besides miroku wears a dress with leggings! lol

YFNCritic says:

I agree with Ann; it's probably a Kosode. Even if it isn't, Furisode just means "flourishing sleeves" and it is NOT only worn by women. However, HOW one wears the Furisode in Japanese culture by the two sexes is a bit different, and Sesshoumaru wears it in a masculine way.
Since the third movie is such a common citation for you, it should be noted that his father wore similar clothing (including the Furisode)in the movie, and the armor was very similar as well, and yet you're not accusing HIM of being a crossdresser.
In the manga we came across Sesshoumaru's mother, and it's true that she wears the crescent moon on her forehead. In your other lense you decided to use this as a sign of his dedication to virginity/power, and yet if he was born at all, the crescent moon on his mother's forehead wouldn't be there.
All in all, I think the "make up" is genetic. He just happens to look a lot like his mama. Besides, I think it's a trend for particularly cruel and interesting men in anime to look like girls. I've seen the pattern in many an anime/manga, and I don't think it applies to just Sesshoumaru at all.
As for the hair thing, let it go. This is fiction, not a memior. His hair is long because there's no opportunity to cut it (the bangs are the exception because they're in front of his face and easy to get to) and it's a lot easier to draw his hair sleek and shiny rather than matted and dirty.
You think Inuyasha spends a lot of time on HIS hair? It's almost identical. A little more full and and fluffy, but nearly the same. That quote of Yura's was directed at the younger brother anyway, meaning that if Inuyasha's hair was at all dirty and neglected, she wouldn't have taken an interest in it.
To be honest, I think your arguments are short-sighted and reduced to the tunnel of your limited perception of the series. This lense, and the rest of them, all follow a similar pattern; they were all formed around a hypothesis you had, and instead of actually looking at all of the evidence about the hypothesis, you found information that supported your hypothesis and then ignored the rest. Sorry to be so harsh, but I think this could have been a lot more in depth and better researched than it was.
In fact, I'm not sure it was researched at all. There are NO citations. Before I take your argument even HALFWAY seriously, I'm going to need to see quotes and works cited, and until then, I will regard everything you've written as just another fiction, just like the series you're trying to validate.

Cali says:

Nope. I just thinnk the human form he takes just happens to be feminine.

ann says:

After looking up Furisode and Kosode, I must say just looking at the manga alone, that Sesshoumaru is wearing a Kosode, because it goes down to his knees. Whereas the Furisode's I saw when I looked them up on google, goes down nearly to the floor.
About the armor, isn't all armor tight?
And Sesshoumaru's hair in the manga at least just goes down to his waist. Not that that means anything.
I also think that the guyliner, and everything else on his face is just demonic lines.
Your article was interesting to read, and I enjoyed reading it, (then again reading anything about my favorite character is enjoyable) but I don't (even though I wanted too) think Sesshoumaru is a cross dresser.

Sesshy As He Orginally Looked Back in 1997

He Was Originally a She?

Now, not knowing Japanese, I have never read the actual words of the oiginal Japanese versions of the books. I have only read the English translations, which did not get translated into English, until AFTER the TV series was translated into English.

So, here's the way I hear the rumor goes, as to why Sesshomaru looks like a girl: In the original versions of the book, he WAS a girl!

Did you know that in the original version of the InuYasha manga in Japan that Sesshoumaru was a girl but the translators who did the anime thought that an older brother would be better than an older sister, so "recast" the character, and that is why Sesshoumaru looks so feminine?

Is this true? I actually do not know. However, looking at the story (book version, not TV show version) it certainly makes more sense, especially with the fight over the sword being given by the father to the younger brother, not the older brother. That never made sense to me. Traditionally the older brother would inherit the father's sword. However, an older sister, would not, and that would certainly make for a logical reason why InuYasha and not Sesshomaru inherited the sword. It would also explain why he is so clearly dressed like a woman and takes to caring for the orphaned children.

Strange how much a story can change when written in one language and than translated into another. A character who was a girl, can be mistranslated as a boy, and than everyone world wide, including the original author, accepts the change as being for the better, so soon, there is no one left who remembers that the character we now know as a Lord was originally called a Lady.

Amano-Jyaku (Japanese heaven spirits - youkai does NOT mean 'demon' like a christian demon - they aren't 'bad'), the more powerful ones USUALLY had moons on their foreheads and the points going to the LEFT indicate that Sesshomaru is HEAVEN BLESSED, and inherantly GOOD. IF he were an EVIL spirit/oni/youkai/mononoke the points would be pointing the other way. He is based more on Inu-gami (dog gods that were originally made of paper and were IN SERVICE TO HUMANS.)

He is a Inugami-inudaiyoukai - a GREAT phantom dog GOD.

He is blessed by izanagi and izanami and the great buddah.

Sesshomaru is NOT evil, NOT a 'demon' as christians think of them. His moon would be BLACK if he were inherantly EVIL.

The moon DOES NOT INDICATE A VOW OF CELIEBACY... HIS MOTHER has the SAME MARK. How on EARTH could his MOTHER - as in - gave BIRTH TO HIM be a VIRGIN?

I think if you researched Japanese folk lore as much as you do the clothing, you would have a more accurate lens here.

I did say, that that was told to me by some one and I hadn't actually read the Japanese versions which is why I was unsure about it, so, yeah, I agree with you on that part

Originally a girl? If you have actually talked to ANYONE who knows Japanese, you would know that Sesshoumaru is a boy's name (a traditional ending for a boy's name in Japanese is -maru) and that Sesshoumaru was ALWAYS a man in the manga and anime. Of the rare times that gender can be distinguished in Japanese (there is no he/she in Japanese, really) he is referred to as a man.

The criticism I have written in the above poll tells the rest (minus the bit on Sesshoumaru's father wearing furisode, which I was mistaken about), and the conclusion is clear: you have done little to no legitimate research for this lense, and have nothing to show me but a load of drivel. I don't mean to sound like an asshole, but I'm afraid there's no other way. There is REALLY no truth in this entire article, and I can't possibly pat you on the back for writing it.

    I apologize.

    WHAAAAAAA!!!! :(

    My fave series has ended!

I want more, Inu stories.... I'll have to settle for fanfic now.

*crys* no more new stories about my Sesshy :(

Oh... love the ending though! Jumped into the future... weddings, babies and all! YAY!

Mad at Keade, GRRRRR, I do not agree with her. *fumes and throws poison venom at her*...

...seems Sesshy don't agree with her either.... cool! *rushes off to write fanfic about Fluffy visiting Rin* We all know he doesn't want her going back to a human village, or he wouldn't be there, willingly being surrounded by all those pathetic humans! :) Sesshie's glare at Kagome's new title for him = Priceless! LOL! LOL! LOL!

Any one else had read the ending yet? It's been out like all of an hour already. ;)

I need to blab spoilers to someone! :)
