Learn about the Dodgers

This lens will help fill in some of the history of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Dodgers Stage a Comeback!

To show the popularity of the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the comeback they are trying to make, the 2007 season opener sold out in under 15 minutes. Only the very early bird got the worm for that game. Another record: the Dodgers sold over $2 million in tickets before April even started%u2026the fastest they reached that mark since the early 1990s.

In the Western Division of the National League, you can find a team called the Los Angeles Dodgers. They make their home in, of course, Los Angeles California, at Dodger Stadium. While most people think of the race barrier being torn down when the picture the Dodgers, others will see a man named O'Malley who had a dream to go west with his baseball team, even during a winning season.

Making History

The race barrier was indeed broken by a Dodger player--Jackie Robinson. Throughout his legendary career, Mr. Robinson broke many records and after his retirement, all teams in Major League baseball retired his number, something never done before or since. As most baseball enthusiasts know, Jackie Robinson was the first African-American baseball player to be elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame (in 1962). His contribution to both the African-American culture and baseball in general is incalculable.

The Dodgers have had many winning seasons and World Series appearances. They are the proud owners of six World Series Champion pennants, 5 earned in Los Angeles and one in Brooklyn. The San Francisco Giants hold the "biggest rivalry with the Dodgers" award, and they have carried this grudge from the early days of baseball in Brooklyn. Since the 1950s, the Dodgers and Giants have not gotten along, and when both teams relocated to California at the same time, the rivalry just carried over to a new location with them.

Recognition

Los Angeles has an extensive list of players inducted into the Hall of Fame as well. Including the likes of Jackie Robinson, Eddie Murray, Juan Marichal, Sandy Koufax, Tommy Lasorda, Frank Robinson, Don Sutton, and more, this lineup features an all-star cast of characters nearly unrivaled in baseball (except by perhaps the Braves, Orioles, and Yankees) at this time. New legends emerging include Derek Lowe, Andruw Jones, Rafael Furcal, Nomar Garciaparra, and many more. A new addition to the Dodger lineup includes new head coach Joe Torre.

The Dodgers are a force to be reckoned with in the National League, when they can keep their best players off the disabled list. Look for the stadium to have seats available, but never count the Dodgers out before the final bell has rung.
