The Lost Gardens of Heligan, a Cornish gem

Why make a lens about the Lost Gardens of Heligan?

I'm making this page about Lost Gardens of Heligan because... It's one of my favourite places, and I'm lucky enough to live within walking distance. Though it does take me about half-an-hour and it's all up hill! Heligan is a beautiful old garden, restored to former glories after being discovered in a very sad state of disrepair. It's the brainchild of Tim Smit, of Eden Project fame. It's open to the public year round, and is absolutely worth a visit. Allow a few hours!

The Lost Gardens of Heligan

What's to see?

The bottom pond, Lost ValleyHeligan is a wonderful mixture of the charmingly domestic, and the wildly exotic. The Lost Valley is a deep cleft in the hillside above Mevagissey, that houses a fabulous collection of exotic ferns, palms and other tender plants that you wouldn't expect to see on a rugged Cornish hillside.

The North Garden, with it's wonderful kitchen garden and charming glass houses is a domestic gem. There are potting sheds to explore, with old tools and equipment, and the Head Gardner's office has a glowing open fire in cold weather.

Heligan in Autumn

Out of Season Beauty

Heligan out of season is a truly beautiful place. The colours are extraordinary, and the crowds are largely gone. In any weather it's a fabulous place to visit, on a bright Autumnal day it's unbeatable.
