Book Review

Started and Finished all within 6 HOURS!!!

Be Wary: Spoilers Ahead. You cannot say you have not been warned.
The conclusion, the grand finale, in this epic Star Wars saga has a hard hitting flow of events at the end. Many important people needlessly die, while many others that would have died are saved. Strange alliances are forged and uncommon plans are put into action. In the end, Darth Caedus dies and Jaina Solo makes a grave mistake. In a way, I always had a feeling that that was the only plausible way the series could end, in Jacen Solo's death. If he lived, many, many other people would have had to die, and that wouldn't have been possible to work out and still have the Star Wars saga as we know it. But we sure do get an exciting ending and an emotional one as well, with only a little ultimate conclusion past the aforementioned deaths and plenty of raw material waiting to be developed in later series to come.
In many ways this book was a bit cheesier and was happier than all the rest, partly because that's the way a series has to end, but it felt strange to me for all of Jacen's work to come to a complete and abrupt failure with little closure and the loss of his greatest love in life (don't say I didn't warn you about the spoilers). It's a little strange to me the combat scenarios that take place between Jaina and Jacen because it doesn't actually talk about Jaina using many Mandalorian techniques which, to my knowledge, was her only advantage over Jacen. It just seems to me that Jacen could almost kill off Kyle Katarn (my favorite Jedi) but is matched completely evenly with his inadequately trained sister.
The novel does lend itself incredibly well to continued development of the universe, with many mysteries left unsolved and an incredibly "peaceful" universe to boot. Quite the happy ending! Many of the parts felt a bit underplayed, like they didn't last long enough, but perhaps that was because I read the book in a matter of 6 hours. It was satisfying to finish this long, long series and gratifying to see closure to the first Star Wars saga I'd gotten into since my later elementary school days. It's good for me to know that I still haven't grown out of it, even after all these years.
I think anyone who has started reading this series owes it to themselves to read the rest of them and finish it up with this one, but to anyone that hasn't yet started; you may want to seriously consider changing that as this series has a lot of impacts on the galactic state of affairs. Of course, if you're really into preserving the happy union of everyone 40 years after Return of the Jedi, then this series will shatter those dreams completely, but for me it was an entertaining plot with politics, military strategy, morality, and ethics mixed into some crazy lightsaber duels and a lot of new force moves. (*hint hint* video game developers, we want to be able to use battle meditation)
