Let Your Table Setting Ideas Run Free Using Pfaltzgraff China and Tableware Accessories

Pfaltzgraff china dinnerware is very popular for many reasons. The dinnerware patterns span a broad range of classic and modern, from sleek white to bold, stylish colors.

Pfaltzgraff brings out new patterns regularly, like Blue Meadows, Laguna, Galaxy Blue-Green, and Calico are just a few of the new styles, to keep the line fresh and contemporary.

Then there are the old favorites, like Pfaltzgraff Tea Rose dinnerware which have been popular for many years.

There are colors and patterns for any party or event that you are planning. Your table setting design can be as simple or complex as you wish.

I've featured just a few of the many beautiful Pfaltzgraff dinnerware patterns in this lens. Some are modern and in current production. Some are discontinued and available in the secondary marketplace.

Pfaltzgraff has been producing dinnerware for America's dinner tables for more than 150 years. Some of the current patterns have been around for 30, 40 or more years. Your mother and grandmother probably owned some of the classic patterns. Pfaltzgraff dinnerware is tasteful and practical for everyday dinners and entertaining.

Pfaltzgraff Dinnerware Fans Are Passionate

Mountain Shadow by Pfaltzgraff dinnerware

I have Pfaltzgraff china in my personal collection and I like to use my dishes. Pfaltzgraff is easy to take care of and it stays beautiful with everyday use. My vintage pattern, Mountain Shadow, can dress up or down as needed for the occasion.

I also look for Pfaltzgraff to help other people build their sets, find pieces that are discontinued, or add to their collections. Before this, I never knew that Pfaltzgraff fans own multiple dinnerware sets, and they trade out their dinnerware with the season, just like you might store and replace your seasonal wardrobe.

They also decorate their dining rooms and kitchens to coordinate with their favorite china patterns. Pfaltzgraff produces textiles, glassware and flatware to coordinate with some patterns, to make this easier.

Contemporary Pfaltzgraff Patterns

Sleek and Bold, Colorful and Classic

Pfaltzgraff Java DinnerwarePfaltzgraff brings out new patterns every year, in keeping with changing tastes and styles. The Pointe series of patterns, like Mahogany Pointe
shown here, comes in several other bold colors in addition to this rich rusty red.

Available in blue, taupe and sage green as well, to fit your color scheme.

Cappuccino is an up-to-the-minute contemporary pattern. White with a faint touch of cinnamon in the plate rims. Very sleek with clean lines. Set a modern and elegant table with this dinnerware.

The Pfaltzgraff Everyday line is something new as well. Orbit Tan, one of the patterns in this line, is rich and earthy with a shape and color variations that will remind you of pieces made on a potter's wheel. This pattern can set a very dramatic table, or lean to the rustic.

Yorktowne - A Perennial Favorite

Along with Heritage and Village

Yorktowne Soup TureenPfaltzgraff pattern names like Yorktowne, Heritage and Village bring to mind Early American or traditional design. You can easily conjure an image of a comfortable home with rooms filled with folk art and real antiques from more than 200 years ago.

For those who own homes that fit this style, setting a traditional table with the right china and stoneware can add a special touch to your family gatherings.

Of the many patterns still in production, these three stand out as perfect for setting a table when Americana is your theme. Very few china patterns, by any maker, get to celebrate anniversaries of 30 or 40 years in production.

  • Yorktowne was introduced in 1967. This dinnerware was inspired by early 19th century handpainted motifs, and blue tones of the company's early salt-glazed stoneware.

  • Heritage came out in 1963. Collectors of vintage glass will recognize the name Georges Briard, but may not know that he designed this ware. The stoneware pieces are multi-sided shapes, glazed in classic white, a very traditional, architectural look.

  • Village was released around 1975-76, the time of the American bicentennial. Its warm, earthy tones of brown and rich butter yellow complement many traditional table settings.

If there was a fourth pattern still in production to add to this list, it would be Folk Art, which has the classic look that coordinates with traditional home decorating style.

My Lens Devoted to Plymouth by Pfaltzgraff

Wonderful Warm Colors and Shapes

The Plymouth pattern is newer than many Pfaltzgraff dinnerware sets, but looks like it's on track to become a long-standing favorite.

Besides the warm fall colors, I love the shapes. Finials shaped like acorns. A butter dish shaped like an ear of corn. Pumpkin and leaf shaped dishes to complement the table setting.

Plymouth is a great pattern choice to make your table setting ideas work. The Plymouth pattern just shouts "warm" and "homey" -- just like a Thanksgiving dinner with the family should be. It will beautify your table and help you serve a bountiful dinner!

Complete Your Look With Accessories

A Little or a Lot, Your Choice

Pfaltzgraff Winterberry GobletPfaltzgraff makes many of different pieces in some of the most popular patterns. Some Pfaltzgraff lovers have decorated their kitchens with their favorites, right down to the breadbox, the rugs, the oven mitts and the pet bowl.

In popular patterns that have been made for many years, like Yorktowne, Tea Rose, Heritage and Winterberry, Pfaltzgraff has made hundreds of different matching and coordinating items over the years to go with the dinnerware, including flatware, storage canisters, cookware, bakeware, plastic ware and other accessories.

There are napkins, tablecloths, garlic keepers, gadget crocks, bathroom accessories, curtains, burner covers, candle lamps and glassware in many shapes and sizes.

New patterns have specialized pieces like entre serving dishes, buffet plates and specialty shaped bowls, like the acorn bowls made to go with the Plymouth pattern. Some of these patterns will become the classics of the future. The longer they are made, the greater the variety of pieces made to coordinate with the dinnerware.

Find Your China Through Non-Traditional Sources

Mountain Shadow Creamer and SugarIf you own some of the less popular, discontinued Pfaltzgraff stoneware patterns like Valley View or Mountain Shadow, or the fine china in patterns like Yuletide or Secrets that were made briefly in the late 1980s or early 1990s, then you have your work cut out for you to complete or add to your table settings.

How can you find more of your cherished china?

  • Internet-based retail outlets are a great place to look. A Google search on Pfaltzgraff and the pattern name should bring you listings on eBay, Bonanzle and many other web-based retail outlets.

  • Some websites have Want It Now or registries, where you can sign up for email notification when more of your discontinued dinnerware pattern arrives.

  • Websites can also help you connect with locally available stock. Classifieds ads on newspaper websites or on CraigsList allow people to advertise items they have for sale. Sellers may not want to ship china, and someone in your area may have exactly what you're looking for.

  • People who want to downsize and give away china they're not longer using may post on FreeCycle, a network of free online membership groups that you can subscribe to, based on where you live. These groups are available in many metropolitan areas, and can also be found by a Google search using terms FreeCycle and your city name.

  • Traditional, local sources like thrift stores, rummage and garage sales, are also a good source, if you have time and a pair of sturdy walking shoes. The biggest danger here may be the other tempting wares you'll find along the way.

No matter which Pfaltzgraff patterns you enjoy, there's nothing so satisfying as finding those last two dinner plates, fruit bowls, or the stove top salt and pepper shakers you're been needing to complete your set.

I love Pfaltzgraff! I have a few left, but they didn't hold up well to the children. I had the brown/dark brown pattern called Village. Great lens! Good resource if I ever decide to go back to them, since the kids are grown now.

Oh, that Pfaltzgraff Village pattern - I know it well! I remember when my father bought it for my mother for their anniversary easily 30'ish years ago. They still have it and use it every day. It's beautiful and has held up so well. They've added to it along the way and I think it will be memorable in my family for several generations. I don't have any myself but I'd take that Winterberry pattern in a heartbeat!
  • dustytoes Feb 9, 2011 @ 3:15 am | delete
