Low Grounds - A Mythological Thriller
Ranked #24,253 in Entertainment, #270,707 overall | Donates to Squidoo Charity Fund
An ancient Portal opens. The new Orpheus descends...
The story takes place in an old industrial town in the early eighties. It's seen through the eyes of high school dropout, an intern at a theater, Delany. The theater's nervy director, Edwina, decides to ignore warnings and mount a production of "Orpheus of the Underworld", a play considered cursed by older members of the theater and the town. When word of Edwina's plan gets out, the town council, guided by a mysterious source, issues the directive to close down the theater immediately.
This starts a series of supernatural events which find its culmination on opening night. With the utterance of the first archaic verses, the ancient portal to the parallel dimension tears open and the soul of one of the performers , Beatrice, is torn apart from her body and drawn to the Low Grounds%u2026 Now, it is up to Delaney to cross
the line between worlds and risk his life to save Beatrice.
This is the beginning of chapter one: The Portal.
The director, Simon Veredon ("In a Different Key") explains that he wanted to create the base for "Low Grounds" on a cross section of world mythology. There are clear references to the myth of Orpheus, Dante's Inferno and eastern philosophy. And all these realms are shown to us through the eyes of a 20 year old high school dropout, immersed in post punk culture.
Shooting is to be done in Poland.
The movie attracted a few renowned personalities in the world of film making, and I will try to get some info on each of them in the next posts. The cast itself looks very promising, but there are also big names "behind the scenes".
You can watch the pre-production promo here in the video box. Posted on YouTube by Simon Veredon himself.
A Closer Look
Why a mythological thriller
'Low Grounds' is set in a scenery of a town with spiritually inclined leaders and a mystical history. The characters are moving in and out of a parallel universe, leaving preconceptions of heaven and hell floating on the surface of an ocean of new found absolutes and endless possibilities.
The elements of wonder and 'otherworldliness' serve as a multi-dimensional background to the strong current of the story. This attracts the audience further and further into the world of a disjointed family. As we penetrate deeper into this world, an ancient lineage is revealed, protecting the town from a Portal holding unlimited potential for mayhem and chaos. A bastard child of this family, without the proper initiations, takes on the challenge that is now facing the town. A challenge tantamount to ... a mythological thriller!
Low Grounds - Main Characters and Actors: John Patrick Amedori (Delany Maynhardt)
Main character

John Patrick Amedori was born on 20 April 1987 in Maryland, Baltimore, USA. First of all he was interested in music, and his ambition was to be a lead guitarist in his own band. He has been playing guitar since he was 9, and at the age of 11 he started his own band called Sanitarum.
It was his appearance in "Almost Famous" (2000) where he played himself that opened him the door to acting. He got the role sending a videotape with him playing the electric guitar. The director was so impressed that he wrote a part especially for him.
He also wrote the song, "Love Song," to the soundtrack of the movie "Stick It," in which he appeared.
His most notable role, so far, seems to be 13 year old Evan Treborn in "Butterfly Effect" (2004).
As for the "Low Grounds", Amedori was attracted to the project by its mystical world and intriguing characters of The Low Grounds.
As there is much information about JAP on the internet, concerning himself, and his movie career, I am not going to copy it here. You know what search engines are for, don't you?

Low Grounds - Main Characters and Actors: Edwina (Leslie Easterbrook)
The Theater Director

The eccentric and driven EDWINA will be brought to life by film icon Leslie Easterbrook. Unforgettable as Callahan in the original Police Academy and 4 of its sequels, Leslie has also portrayed long-running characters on the small screen in LAVERNE AND SHIRLEY and RYAN'S HOPE. Recent credits include big screen's A DEAD CALLING, THE DEVIL'S REJECTS, HALLOWEEN, and THE HEARTBREAK KID. Leslie is delighted to embody the truly unique and charmingly abrasive character of Edwina.

Low Grounds - Main Characters and Actors: Richard (John Shea)
The ex-rocker, ex-occultist theater composer

Best known to TV audiences for his recurring role as Lex Luthor, the incarnation of evil, in the TV series "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman" (1993). John Shea (born 1949 in Massachusetts) made his first great appearance in the Academy Award-winning thriller Missing (1982) by Costa Gavras. Jack Lemmon (playing his father) and Sissy Spacek (playing his wife) were also nominated for Oscars for their roles. In 1984, he won the Best Actor Award at the Montreal Film Festival for his role in Windy City (1984).
On stage he received a Drama Desk award for "American Days," an Obie award for "The Dining Room," and a 1976 Theatre World Award for his portrayal of the Jewish student Avigdor in "Yentl."
On television John was awarded the Emmy for the role of the distressed husband and father wannabe who touches off a legal landmark case in the miniseries Baby M (1988) (TV). He also appeared in guest parts on such well-received series as "Sex and the City," "Tales From the Crypt," "The Hitchhiker" and "Law and Order."
Most recently he found popularity on the "Mutant X" (2001) sci-fi series playing the role of Adam Kane. He has also appeared on episodes of "Law & Order" and "Medium."
He was attracted to the Low Grounds by its intriguing story and the off-beat feel of the script.

People Behind the Scenes: Simon Veredon, Writer/Director

Simon Veredon grew up in the theater during the modern dance movement in 1970s Germany. At sixteen he started acting professionally in a small theater in Cologne, while at the same time pursuing music as a singer/songwriter in a popular local band. Eager to experience more of the world, Simon eventually moved to Boston (by way of New Zealand) and attended Boston University where he graduated with a BFA in Theater Arts.
In 1993 Simon began to mount productions of his unique brand of pop theater. For the Boston Playwright's Festival he wrote, directed and produced the play SARAH. Deemed by peers "the birth of a new genre in theater," SARAH incorporated hip hop dance elements by choreographer Hillel Meltzer ('Stomp') as well as original music composed by Simon. After graduation he moved to New York City where he directed and edited experimental short films and music videos, which aired in '94/'95 on the bi-weekly show 'Feedback In The House' on Manhattan Cable.
Soon lured back to Germany to guest star in various popular one hour drama TV series,
such as FAHNDER, TATORT, POWDER PARK, FIRST LOVE and many more. Simon also
used his time to produce and direct several large events in Berlin and Belgium, creating and directing new performance pieces. He also directed and edited the 30 minute featurette
Hamlet in Belgium, wrote and performed with the electronica/pop band Jamoki in Berlin,
and freelanced as a video editor for the German TV station Deutsche Welle in Cologne.
Simon is now settled in Los Angeles, California where he arrived in 2002 as the editor and
compositor of the animated film 'You Are Mine' and has since worked as the online editor, often for several entire seasons on THE O.C., SMALLVILLE, RESCUE ME, DESPERATE
HOUSEWIVES, and BONES. He was also commissioned to re-cut last year's DISTURBIA,
BLADES OF GLORY and other titles for future television broadcast.
In 2004 he started developing the film IN A DIFFERENT KEY with co-writer Thora Magnusson, which he directed and edited. IN A DIFFERENT KEY and the LOW GROUNDS trilogy are repped by LongTale LLC, which is providing production services also. In 2006 Simon founded InsideFilms LLC as a production company for IADK and the
motion picture trilogy LOW GROUNDS.
People Behind the Scenes: Omar Kaczmarczyk, Producer, Longtale

Omar Kaczmarczyk, LongTale's founder and managing director, originated the concept of segmented rights sales for movies, which is now the industry standard. Today, he and his
team of "visioneers" are the driving force in revolutionarynew directions in film distribution.
"LongTale International is where motion pictures play forever," says Omar. "Once LongTale becomes the asset manager of your intellectual property, the producer's creation becomes a perpetual wealth-builder. We are building a distribution model that absorbs new revenue streams opening up all over the globe, which will generate wealth into the far distant future. We are a digital democracy where every viewer is counted and every creative vision given a place to be enjoyed."
Omar Kaczmarczyk has over 30 years experience in film production and distribution,
having consulted over 140 international co-productions and independent films worldwide. He has served in executive, financial, and distributor capacities with an invaluable knowledge of the worldwide film market for optimum management of intellectual properties.

a distribution service for producers from all over the world for a truly global presence in the ever-expanding world of cinematic diversity. In 2006, he produced the feature-length documentary "Timothy Leary and the Art of Dying". In 2000, in conjunction with the Fries Film Group, he executive produced the live action film "The New Adventures of Pinocchio" starring Martin Landau. People Behind the Scenes: Gray Horsfield, Visual Effects Designer

Visual effects Academy Award Winner Gray Horsfield is best known and world
renowned for his ground breaking special effects in the LORD OF THE RINGS
trilogy.
Gray Horsfield started writing in BASIC at age 10 on arguably the first home computer, the Texas Instruments TI99/4a. Gray has since made a decided effort to spend as little time coding as possible, and instead use the tools that better developers turn out. Starting with 3D computer graphics in 1988 for a commercial house in Australia, Gray then moved on to spend 4 years in south east Asia, taking on freelance computer graphics work all over the region. in 1994 Gray joined up with Peter Jackson's new company, Weta, as the 4th employee, and worked on a dozen films in as many years, including The Frighteners, Heavenly Creatures, Contact, Lord of the Rings 1, 2, and 3, Valiant and King Kong. Vindication of his addiction still remains a primary cause for leaving the film industry and joining the ranks at Valve Corporation, the creator of the massively popular computer game series Half-Life.
Gray started his movie career working as a digital artist on THE FRIGHTENERS at Weta Digital with Peter Jackson on creative and digital effects. He then worked on Robert Zemeckis' CONTACT, which was one of the first movies with a budget of over $90 million to be produced in Gray's native New Zealand.
During the epic work phase on LORD OF THE RINGS he worked his way up to digital visual effects designer and creator and was honored with an Academy Award.
Gray's credits include KING KONG (2005) as the Digital Destruction Supervisor
(Weta Digital Ltd.), THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE
RING (2001) in conceptual digital visualization (WETA Digital/digital visual effects
designer & creator-Wellington/New Zealand) and CONTACT (1997) as a digital
artist.
Hobbies include: blowing stuff up, and blowing other stuff up.
People Behind the Scenes: Jaz Coleman, Composer

Jaz Coleman is one of the music industry's most diverse composers, oscillating between the white heat of Killing Joke (the chart-topping, legendary punk band) and the world's symphony orchestras. Raised in England in an academic family that revered Leonardo Da Vinci, he was groomed to be a musician, studying piano and violin from the age of six. By fourteen his awards included the Gold Medal at the Bath International Festival, and 'Distinction for Violin' and the Rex Watson Cup at the Cheltenham International Festival of Music.
Jaz Coleman has studied and played music from many cultures, and is a multi-instrumentalist. He studied Arabic music at the Cairo Conservatoire and has a passion for Czech folk music and M%u0101ori music, among others. One of his M%u0101ori pieces is the "Second Symphony for M%u0101ori Voice and Orchestra". He was involved in adding a verse in the M%u0101ori language to the New Zealand national anthem; it was sung by M%u0101ori singer Hinewehi Mohi at the 1999 Rugby World Cup match, and after some controversy the verse was officially added.
In 1979, at age seventeen, Jaz founded the legendary post-punk group Killing Joke. Two generations of contemporaries such as Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Tool, Faith No More, Nine Inch Nails, Ministry and Metallica, proclaim to have been influenced by Killing Joke. In 2001, Jaz was commissioned by the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden London for his first large scale opera entitled The Marriage at Cana. It received critical acclaim and is set to be recorded with Sarah Brightman. Also commissioned by the Royal Opera House was Coleman's Unwanted, a Concerto Grosso for violin, viola, and string orchestra.
Along with Anne Dudley of Art of Noise fame, in 1990 Jaz Coleman co-wrote and co-performed the middle-eastern instrumental album called "Songs From the Victorious City" (which is a reference to Cairo, Egypt). 1994 saw the release of "Symphonic Music of the Rolling Stones", which features 11 classic Rolling Stones songs performed by The London Symphony Orchestra. Coleman is responsible for the arrangments of majority of the songs. In 1995 he released his first of three albums of symphonic rock music. Us and Them: Symphonic Pink Floyd and Kashmir: The Symphonic Led Zeppelin were both written and produced by Jaz Coleman with Peter Scholes conducting the London Philharmonic Orchestra. On June 8, 2007, Coleman collaborated with over 150 youth musicians in the Contemporary Youth Orchestra, based in Cleveland, OH, to perform the entirety of Kashmir: Symphonic Led Zeppelin along with additional orchestrations of Led Zeppelin's music. In 1999 he produced and arranged an album of Doors material for orchestra, performed by classical musicians including Nigel Kennedy and the Prague Symphony Orchestra, called "Riders on the Storm: The Doors Concerto CD" (released in 2000). He has worked with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, who have issued a CD of his Symphony No. 1 "Idavoll", with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, and as composer in residence to the Prague Symphony Orchestra. In 2002 he was commissioned by IRCAM to compose a three-part concerto "Music of the Quantum", expressing the ideas of the quantum and emergence in musical form, which he co-produced with his older brother, Piers Coleman (born February 13, 1958).
Jaz has extensive experience with movie soundtracks such as Walt Disney's MULAN, WEIRD SCIENCE, CINDERELLA, and SHOWGIRLS. In 2001, film director Petr Zelenka completed his new classic in which Coleman conducted and composed the soundtrack, which has reached double platinum status. In 2002, Coleman was awarded three Grammies, and sales went quadruple platinum for his concerto for the Czech folk group and orchestra entitled PROMENY. 2003 has seen PROMENY being performed in 8,000-10,000 seat auditoriums throughout the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
In October 2006 it was announced that Jaz Coleman had been chosen as Composer in Residence for the European Union. As Composer in Residence he will be given a grant to write and perform music for the EU on special occasions.
Jaz is currently based out of Prague and New Zealand where he has composed the current New Zealand national anthem by governmental commission. He has also been asked to re-arrange and conduct the Godfather trilogy for a huge live event.
He is thrilled to be a part of Low Grounds, because of the punk rock and mystical aspects along with the added challenge to combine electronic rock genre instruments with symphonic orchestral arrangements and mounting a large scale symphonic recording in Prague.
