High Cholesterol

Having high blood cholesterol levels, especially elevated LDL, is a serious health condition that contributes to a buildup of plaque in the arteries which can reduce the blood flow to the brain, kidneys, genitals, extremities, and the heart. High Cholesterol produces deposits in the arteries which makes it one of the leading causes of heart and other cardiovascular diseases.

What is Cholesterol? 

Cholesterol comes from two sources, our diet, and it is manufactured in the liver. Cholesterol is a fatty substance that is an essential part of every cell in the body and is also needed for hormone production, and both healthy nerve and brain function. Since cholesterol is a fatty compound and the blood is mostly water, it needs to bind to a lipoprotein to effectively travel through the body.

Low-density lipoproteins (LDLs) are the major carriers of cholesterol in the bloodstream. LDLs are known as "bad cholesterol" because it is known to deposit in the arteries. High-density lipoproteins (HDLs) carry the excess or unneeded cholesterol away from the cells and are known as the "good cholesterol". HDLs carry the unneeded cholesterol to the liver where it is broken down to be removed from the body.

Most doctors recommend that you keep your blood, or serum cholesterol below 200. Typically, doctors will recommend a statin drug if your cholesterol is higher. Statins work, but they increase your risk of liver disease, muscle pains, arrhythmias, and heart attacks.
