M.C. Escher
Maurits Cornelis Escher, one of the world's most famous graphic artists, lived from 1898 to 1972. When Escher was 21 he enrolled in the Haarlem School for Architecture and Decorative Arts. After a week he decided he would rather study graphic art instead of architecture. Studying under Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita, Escher gained experience in drawing and making woodcuts.
His work defied structure, perspective and space and continues to amaze millions of people all over the world. He is well known for his "impossible structures" but has also made some more realistic work. During his lifetime he made 448 lithographs, woodcuts and wood engravings and over 2000 drawings and sketches. M.C. Escher also illustrated books, designed tapestries, postage stamps and murals.

- I just love Escher. I'm a math person, and those tessellations always make me happy. I just picked up an amazing book of his work, the first one on your list, in fact. It has EVERYTHING. Another successful visit to the local used book store.

- I'll try that again. It was the Haarlem Architecture and Decorative Arts, not Harleem. Haarlem is one of the bigger Dutch cities.
