History of MMORPGs (key games)

1996: Meridian 59 is the first internet based graphic MUD giving birth to the MMORPG.

1997: Ultima Online broke out as the MMO leader thanks to its franchise name and top down Diablo style gaming.

1998: EverQuest the first 3D MMORPG and successor of Ultima Online. It spawned a whole generation of clones and gaming addicts.

1999: Asheron's Call some say this was a clone of EQ I say Pepsi-Coke.

2001: Dark Age of Camelot shows us what largescale PvP can really be when it has vision.

2003: Star Wars Galaxies is released and has moderate success in line with EQ success.

2004: City of Heroes the only Superhero MMORPG available to date.

2005: World of Warcraft what can be said but, WOW. With 5 million subscribers it is the largest MMORPG in the history of the genre.

2006: Future is Bright, who is not making a MMO?
There are about 15 MMORPGs in alpha-beta right now and who knows how many are on the drawing board.

World of Warcraft: The biggest MMO in history? Yes, WoW caters to everyone from the casual to the hardcore.

Dark Age of Camelot: Quite possibly the best implementation of large scale PvP ever offered in a MMO.
Ultima Online: Say what you want about Meridian 59, UO is the "first" MMORPG. All Hail Lord British.
City of Heroes: Hands down best Character creation. The only Super hero MMORPG! POW! ZING!
Guild Wars: Not a MMO? Say that to my WarMos face, I dare ya! PvP to the extreme
Asheron's Call: Most levels in a MMO?(JK) It's The Pepsi to Everquests Coke.
Shadowbane: PvP? Check. PK? Check. Heres your game
Star Wars Galaxies: Be a Jedi! What else could you ask for. The force is with you.
Eve Online: The only "space" MMORPG available sorry ^ hehe
