MacSpeech Dictate Review: Best Voice Recognition for your Mac

http://www.macspeech.com

Are you looking for voice recognition software for your Mac computer? Until a year ago, you were out of luck. The best voice recognition software was for Windows machines only.

Mac users wept bitter tears, then if they were on an Intel machine, bit the bullet, installed Boot Camp, and ran Windows. However, with the release of MacSpeech Dictate, Mac users finally had their very own voice recognition software which was as good as any VR program on Windows.

I've been using MacSpeech Dictate for around a year, and while it's not perfect, it's certainly enabled me to be much more productive. One of the best features of this program is that there's very little training involved.

Voice recognition software in general nowadays requires little training, but as with other programs, if you want fewer errors, it's advisable to spend five minutes or so in training, so that MacSpeech Dictate recognizes your speech patterns.

What's so great about MacSpeech Dictate?

Let's look at some areas in which this speech recognition software shines

Voice Recognition Which Lets You Talk Naturally

When you first start using voice recognition software, you tend to speak more slowly, and enunciate more. This isn't necessary with MacSpeech Dictate. In fact, the more slowly you speak, the more errors the program will make. Speak as you do in normal conversation -- dictating with this program is like giving a presentation: just keep talking, don't pause and wait for the program because it catches up fast.

You Can Dictate in Almost Any Program

I use MacSpeech Dictate in many different programs on my Mac. If I want to write an email message for example, I just create a new message, and dictate it. I haven't (so far) found any programs which accept text input in which I can't use MacSpeech Dictate.

MacSpeech Dictate: Warm up your Voice for Voice Recognition Success

Warm up Your Voice

MacSpeech Dictate is very sensitive to your voice. After you've completed the short training period for the first time, the program transcribes your speech best when you speak in a conversational tone, rather than slowing down your speech -- I've found that when I over-enunciate the program makes more errors.

Before you start the program therefore, read an email message or other short note to warm up your voice. Adjust the microphone too, to ensure that it's not directly in front of your lips, but a finger-width from your lower lip.

If you're dictating in the early morning, use the training facility for a few minutes. Just choose Voice Training from the Tools menu. This calibrates your voice for that session.

MacSpeech Dictate WorkFlow Suggestions

Dictate to your Mac

Avoid Looking at the Screen when You Dictate

When you dictate, avoid looking at the computer screen, because the temptation is for you to wait until MacSpeech Dictate catches up with you. This isn't necessary. The program makes fewest errors when you dictate at the same speed, rather than slowing down for the computer to catch up.

Organize your material before you start dictating. If I'm responding to email messages for example, I deal with all my email before dictating other documents. This makes for a more productive workflow.

Outline What You Want to Say

MacSpeech Dictate is very fast, so create a short outline of your dictation, and then speak as you normally do.

If I'm dictating an article, or a report for exmple, I like to outline the material first, and then speak as if I'm giving a presentation. If I know I've made errors, I just ignore them and keep dictating until I've completed the document. I've found that this increases my productivity.

MacSpeech Dictate will increase your productivity every day. These tips will help you to get the most from this voice recognition program.

Hack Attack: Make your Mac's Speech Recognition work for you
Since the dawn of computers, who among us hasn't dreamed of verbally telling our computer what to do? The problem is, most computers don't have support for voice recognition, and most applications that promise great things in this arena are wildly expensive.

What you may not know is that your Mac does come with a useful Speech Recognition tool built in. Although it doesn't do all that much out-of-the-box, it's really easy to create your own speakable actions for virtually any application.
