Madison, Wisconsin, USA
The nicknames Madtown and Mad-city resonate with Madison's lingering counterculture culture. 'Hippie' and green themed shops are still the norm along and just off State Street, a main street linking the Capitol building and campus, transformed years ago into an outdoor shopping mall.
Or maybe those nicknames stick because of the renown partying that fills every weekend, starting most Thursdays (during the school year). All around Madison's downtown, which is adjacent to UW-Madison's dorms and frat houses, which merges into diverse student-rented rooms and flats, stuffed into divided up Victorian and Prairie Style older houses surrounding and spreading eastward from Capitol Square, the party atmosphere prevails.
Madison is a Mad-city to drive through because it is also an isthmus, a 'city of four lakes'. Yes, Madison, WI is mostly water! The 4 lakes assure there are (usually) no straight lines between any two starting and finishing points in Madison and the way back is hardly ever the way you came.
