What Is A Magic Jack?

The Magic Jack is a home Voice-Over-IP (VOIP for short) phone solution that is trying to take on the big corporations, and for the moment, seems to be succeeding. It is gaining huge success among the thrifty consumers that are sick of paying huge monthly phone bills. Considering phone companies usually charge around $30.00 per month just for a regular landline service, it is no suprised that at only $20.00 per year for a complete service, that Magic Jack is gaining huge traction.

How Does Magic Jack Work?

The Magic Jack itself is probably slightly smaller then a credit card, and plugs into a USB port on your computer. USB ports are pretty standard nowadays so no problems there. The device also has whats called a RJ11 input which is a standard telecom input. As soon as you plug the Magic Jack in, it loads accross all the software required, and you can start using calls immediately. The device does require a high speed internet connection, but in saying that, anything above dial up should be fine. As for operating systems, It is fully supported on both Macs and Window PC's from XP and up. Even the newly released windows 7

What Are The Costs

For how much use you can get out of the Magic Jack, it is actually surprisingly cheap. You pay $40 upfront for the actual device itself which is yours to keep (Although if you stopped using the service there isnt much sense there), and then from then on, you pay $19.95 per month. One this is paid, you can make local and long distance calls absolutely free, there is 0 catches. Ofcourse you have to pay for international calls, but for the most part that can be ignored here.

Ontop of the free calls, Magic Jack offers Call waiting, 3 way conference calls, call forwarding, voicemail and every other feature you would expect on a similar smart phone. And all of this comes packaged with Magic Jack for free with no extra charges.
