"Magic Kingdom for Sale--Sold!" (The Magic Kingdom of Landover) by Terry Brooks - A Short Review

When I first saw this book I looked at the picture on the front and thought it was just a whimsical book, written for the pure love of the almighty dollar. In other words, full of fluff. But, the book is full of stuff that can teach some life lessons.

The book starts with a lawyer (funny that Terry Brooks himself was also a lawyer) who had just lost his wife. Starts off as quite the tragedy.

The lawyer is driven by grief and wants to escape life. He sees the ad for a magic kingdom for sale and deicdes, even though he knows it's an absolute farce, to do it.

I don't want to ruin the whole story for you, especially if you haven't read it. I found this whole series excellent. I could say it's better than the Shannara series, but I won't. They're different, so I won't compare them.

The thing that stays the same in both series, the Shannara and the Landover series, is that things get so bad, the bad guys are winning, the heros are all about to die, etc. and somehow it turns out ok in the end.

This book has an awesome lesson in it. The hero is confronted by the head demon who wants to drive him out of the land and he comes to a final decision. Will he stick with his resolution to keep the magic kingdom? Or will he run back to earth, afraid forever?

In a final confrontation with himself the hero makes the ultimate decision to stay and fight the demon, even though he will surely die, and suddenly all the mysteries of the kingdom are his. The hero suddenly finds himself the champion and able to defeat the demon and send him back to the dark place (or is it bright from the flames) he came from.

Suffice it to say, I found this book a wonderful read. Hopefully, you will feel the same way about this book!
