About Magistream

Magistream is a free online hatching game. Launched in 2009, it uses visitor's clicks to grow creatures, but has no time limits, making it idea for someone who does not have a lot of time.

Since launch it has also added quests, legends, shops, and a detailed history, which gives players something to do with their creatures once they have hatched them.

Hatching eggs by clicks

Magistream is a new hatching game. The concept is simple: a magic stream contains the eggs of creatures floating in it. You can remove these eggs adn take them to your Keep. Once there you hatch them by getting other users to click on links to view them, by placing the links in forum signatures, webpages, blogs etc.

Eventually the eggs will turn into hatchlings and then adults with the right number of clicks. There is no time limit, so if you need to leave the game for a while, you will find your creatures as you left them.

Eggs and clicks

The eggs require clicks in order to grow up. According to the FAQ, it takes about 30 for them to grow up and another 40 to reach adulthood. Each creature has two percentage bars beside it on their profile, showing how close they are to completing their stage, and how close they are to full maturity.

You can only have four eggs at a time.

To get clicks, you need to "embed" eggs which means displaying them on a website or forum where they can be clicked on by other users. The site gives you the code in HTML for websites and BBCode for forums, but one really nice touch is the ability to generate code that embeds multiple eggs at once for forum signatures. For anyone familiar with hatching games this will not be unusual.

You can freeze the creatures at any stage - including eggs and hatchlings - in order to try and get a complete collection. However this is irreversible, so don't try to get over the four egg limit thinking you can unfreeze them later!

Quests, Trading and Breeding

As well as eggs grabbed from the Stream, you can get rarer eggs, but these take more effort:
  • Breeding - by breeding creatures together you can create hybrids and species not available from the stream
  • Trading - You can trade for rare creatures with other players who already have them.
  • Quests - Completing Quests in the World section of the game can get you rare species

Although the game itself is free, there are eggs that you need to get using Crystal Shards. However Crystal Shards only gained by donating to the game, so either you need to pay for them or trade with someone who has.

Unlike most games, Magistream comes with a mechanism for trading pets.A lot of players take advantage of this to open shops, breeding pets to order for gold shards or exchanging pets. It also means that if you have two pets of the same gender, it is usually easy to swap it with someone else to get the right genders for breeding.

Trades are usually easily arranged on the forum, and there are a lot of threads showing what each user wants for their creatures.

Opera issues: If you use an old version of the Opera browser, trading and embed multiple may not work - whle the creatures appear the forms do not change. This caught me out last night. Switching to Firefox resolved the problem.

Only one account is allowed per user, to prevent abuse of the trading system or egg limit.

Breeding is simple: Click on the breed action and it takes you to a page with two sets of images. At the top is the creature you want to breed and below it are all the creatures compatible with it. Click one of the second set to breed the pair, and sometimes an egg will result. You can only breed creatures every three days, so choose your pairs carefully!

Note that the child has the parents' names on their details, unlike streamborn eggs. You can even create lineages or families depending on what you name your creatures.

Also remember that whether bred or grabbed from the stream you can only have 4 eggs at a time.

However you can cross breed some species, and not always the obvious ones! TThis is the only way to gain some of the rarer creatures e.g.:

Some terms and common phrases have sprung up on Magistream. Remember these terms only apply to how the egg came into the game: e.g. if you buy an egg from another player that they took from the stream, that egg is streamborn not shop bought.

The egg's origin can be important for breeding and quests. Lineaged eggs (those that weren;t just bred but have a formal family in the game) can't be used for quests.
  1. Streamborn - an egg taken from the stream
  2. Shop Born - also Shop Bought, an egg bought from one of the game's official shops.
  3. Pond Born - Usually a Koi egg, gained from the Koi pond area on the Worldmap
  4. Bred - a bred egg is one created by breeding two of your creatures together.
  5. Quest-born - received at the end of a quest
  6. Lineaged - when you breed two creatures you have the option to create a family. If you do, the egg withh have a lineage and cannot be used for quests.

Game currency: Gold shards and Crystal Shards

A further option

While the game is mainly about raising your creatures, there are other aspects to explore. The game has two forms of currency that support this:

Gold shards
This is the game's default currency. Gold can be gained by posting in the forum or by clicking on a creature you haven't clicked on before. Since some of the rare ceatures in the shops can cost upwards of 1,500 gold and you only get one gold per creature/click, it can take time to build funds. Gold is necessary to get shop bought creatures, buy some of the extras and gag gifts in the game, and to complete some quests. It is also commonly used for trades between players.

Crystal Shards
These are received only if you donate cash to the game, and can be used to buy the rarest creatures. You may also be able to trade with other players to get one.

Many players "goldmine" by visiting sites with a lot of magistream links and clicking them to get gold for quests. Special goldmines have been set up with no images to make this faster.

Users of some scripts that go with the game (Snaplinks and Closer) can make a lot of funds in a short time by using them to activate a lot of creature links simultaneously. This has lead to the creation of image-free mines, where hundreds of creatures can be clicked simultaneously in one block.

The World - Quests and Legends

The RPG side of the game

As well as your Keep, there is a world map where most of Magistream extras take place. There are a number of areas depicted, each with history and legends. More importantly, they also have quests.

Quests can leave you going to an area, then returning to the game to gather the requirements, whether money or specific creatures and then returning to the quest to find the next stage. You can do more than one quest at once, and the more detailed ones require a good knowledge of the game and the raising of a number of rare creatures. Several of the quests require you to give up the creatures to trade them for the next stage, one aspect I am not fond of.

This is an unusual feature for a hatching game.

**Note: I saw Maria's comment, but wasn't sure what she meant and didn't put it live until I finished a certain quest. Ethical vegetarians who share that view might want to avoid this one (highlight to read it):
